What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 12th house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of expenditure, loss, foreign or distant places, sleep and release. The house of deeds carries its affairs into the house where things are spent.

The 12th is a dusthana. Counted from the 10th it is the 3rd, the house of effort relative to work. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) covers expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 12th

Ch. 24 Sl. 120: if the lord of Karm is in the Vyaya Bhava, the native "will spend through royal abodes", will have fear from enemies, and "will be worried in spite of being skilful". The bphs-alt text agrees. Each clause joins a 10th-house subject to a 12th-house outcome: authority becomes a channel of expense, and skill, the 10th house's quality, does not prevent worry. This is the text's claim about a configuration and is reported here as such.

As with Sl. 114 for the 6th, the verse grants skill and withholds its reward. Sl. 145-148 then scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling.

Association rules for the 12th

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say that the effects of the 12th lord depend on its association. That rule is about the 12th lord, not a visitor; but the 10th lord in the 12th joins whatever planets are there, and the chapter's attention to association is a reason to look at them. Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds that a graha associated with the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, without the aspect of a Kon lord, harms finances in its Dasha. The engine does not test that rule. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 says a Kendra lord that also owns an evil house does not form a Raj Yoga by mere relation.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 10th lord in the 12th.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

Aquarius rising is the one exalted row: Mars in Capricorn, owning the 3rd and 10th. Two rows are debilitated: Saturn in Aries for Taurus rising, where Saturn is the yogakaraka owning the 9th and 10th, and the Sun in Libra for Scorpio rising. Three are enemy signs: Jupiter in Taurus (Gemini), Mars in Gemini (Cancer, where Mars is the yogakaraka) and Venus in Cancer (Leo). Virgo and Libra rising give friendly signs. Twice, then, the chart's best planet, the yogakaraka, is weak in the house of loss.

The yogakaraka rows

Three Ascendants have a yogakaraka among their 10th lords: Taurus (Saturn, 9th and 10th), Cancer (Mars, 5th and 10th) and Capricorn (Venus, 5th and 10th). In the 12th, all three land in difficult or middling signs: Saturn debilitated in Aries, Mars in Gemini, an enemy sign, and Venus in Sagittarius, neutral. For those charts the placement takes the planet BPHS regards as most auspicious and puts it in the house of loss, which is why the second lordship matters so much here. Sl. 145-148 say a planet owning two houses gives both results; for a yogakaraka in the 12th, one of those results is a trine's, carried into the 12th along with Sl. 120.

For Virgo and Pisces rising the 10th lord is also the Lagna lord, so the person's ruler is in the 12th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 12 reads the Lagna lord in the 12th, without benefic aspect or company, as lacking physical happiness, spending unfruitfully and quick to anger, a verse that then applies alongside Sl. 120. Both are the text's statements, not forecasts. Mercury for Virgo rising is in Leo, a friendly sign, and Jupiter for Pisces rising is in Aquarius, neutral.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 120 is unfavourable, a strong 10th lord gives it fully; what offsets it is a favourable second lordship. For Taurus rising Saturn brings the 9th, for Cancer and Capricorn rising the 10th lord brings the 5th, and for Virgo and Pisces rising it is the Lagna lord. Dignity tells how fully the planet gives those as well.

From the 12th, every graha aspects the 6th. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 3rd and the 7th; a Jupiter the 4th and the 8th; a Saturn the 2nd and the 9th. None of them aspects the 10th from here, so the 10th lord in the 12th, unlike the 10th lord in the 4th, does not look back at its own house.

The derived count, the 12th as the 3rd from the 10th, is the house of effort relative to work. BPHS does not use it in Sl. 120, and this page does not either; it is noted only because derived-house arguments often appear alongside this placement.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 10th (Sl. 142), reads as expenditure through royal persons and only moderate happiness from the father. The two verses are close in content: both make authority a channel of expense. Together they are a parivartana between a dusthana and an angle. The 10th lord in the 11th (Sl. 119) gives wealth and children and the 10th lord in the 1st (Sl. 109) learning and fame; Sl. 120 is where the 10th lord's sequence turns outward.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Mars in Gemini

• With Cancer rising the 10th house is Aries, so the 10th lord is Mars, which also owns Scorpio, the 5th: the Cancer yogakaraka.
• The 12th house is Gemini. Mars is there at 15.42 degrees, Ardra pada 3, "Enemy sign", and combust.
• The Sun (Gemini 7.92, lord of the 2nd) and Mercury (25.01, own sign, lord of the 3rd and 12th) share the 12th.
• Saturn is exalted in Libra in the 4th, retrograde; the engine reports Sasa Yoga for it.

Mercury, the 12th lord, is in its own 12th, so the engine reports Vimala Yoga. The 10th lord is therefore associated with the 12th lord, the situation Ch. 42 Sl. 13 describes; the remaining condition is the absence of a Kon lord's aspect. Jupiter, the 9th lord, is in Capricorn in the 7th and aspects the 11th, 3rd and 1st, not the 12th; Mars, the 5th lord, is itself in the 12th. The engine also reports Kemadruma for this chart's Moon, which is a separate rule about the Moon's isolation. On Sl. 145-148's scale, an enemy-sign, combust yogakaraka in the 12th is the weak case of an unfavourable verse.
