In short
The 10th lord in the 11th house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the house of gains, income and elder siblings. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 119 reads it as wealth, happiness and children, with virtue, truthfulness and constant delight. For Aries rising the 10th lord also owns the 11th and is in its own sign there; for Pisces rising it is debilitated.
What the placement means
"The 10th lord in the 11th house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of gains, income, fulfilled aims, friends and elder siblings. Work's affairs are carried into the house of returns.
Both houses are upachayas. Counted from the 10th, the 11th is the 2nd, the wealth house of the house of work, so by either count the placement is about what work yields. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.
What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 11th
Ch. 24 Sl. 119: if the lord of Karm is in the Labh Bhava, the native "will be endowed with wealth, happiness and sons", and will be virtuous, truthful and always delighted. The bphs-alt text agrees. It is a plain, favourable verse, the 11th house's gains with the 10th lord's character added. Compare Sl. 107 for the 9th lord in the 11th, which stresses gains "day by day"; Sl. 119 does not specify a pace.
Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.
Ownership of the 11th, and the royal-court rule
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 list the 11th lord as the strongest of the evil lordships. That is a rule about owning the 11th; it bears on this page directly only for Aries rising, where Saturn owns both the 10th and the 11th and so is a 10th lord in its own 11th. Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the predominant lordship stalls the lesser, and the 10th, a Kendra, is the predominant one.
Ch. 40 Sl. 2, among the yogas for royal association, says that if the 10th and 11th are free of malefic occupation and aspect, and the 11th is aspected by its own lord, the native "will be a chief in the king's court". The rule concerns the 11th lord's aspect, not the 10th lord's placement, but it is the one BPHS rule that names the 10th and 11th houses together. The engine does not test it.
The Bhrigu Sutras have no sutra on this lordship; the editor's commentary on Saturn in the 11th names the Aries-rising case, Saturn there "as lord of the 10th and 11th", among very powerful Dhana yogas. Saravali is silent.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).
| Ascendant | 10th lord | 11th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 11th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Pisces | Neutral | 9th |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 7th |
| Cancer | Mars | Taurus | Neutral | 5th |
| Leo | Venus | Gemini | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Virgo | Mercury | Cancer | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Libra | Moon | Leo | Friendly sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Sun | Virgo | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 7th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Scorpio | Neutral | 5th |
| Aquarius | Mars | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Capricorn | Debilitated | 1st |
Aries rising is the own-sign row: Saturn in Aquarius, moolatrikona by degree. Pisces rising is the weak row: Jupiter, the Lagna lord as well as the 10th lord, is debilitated in Capricorn. Virgo rising puts Mercury, also the Lagna lord, in an enemy sign (Cancer). Five rows are friendly: Gemini (Jupiter in Aries), Leo (Venus in Gemini), Libra (the Moon in Leo), Sagittarius (Mercury in Libra) and Aquarius (Mars in Sagittarius). The rest are neutral.
Second lordships that come with it
Read row by row, the second-lordship column changes the verse more than the sign column. For Taurus rising Saturn owns the 9th and 10th and sits in Pisces, neutral by nature: a Dharma-Karmadhipati planet in the house of gains. For Cancer rising Mars, the yogakaraka, is in Taurus, also neutral. For Capricorn rising Venus, the yogakaraka, is in Scorpio, neutral again. For Gemini rising Jupiter owns the 7th and 10th and stands in Aries, a friendly sign: the benefic owning two angles that Ch. 34 reads with reserve. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 10th lord also owns the 3rd, one of Ch. 34's evil lordships, so the 11th receives a planet that carries both a Kendra and an upachaya.
For Libra and Scorpio rising the 10th lord is a luminary with no second house: the Moon in Leo (friendly) and the Sun in Virgo (neutral). Sl. 119 then applies without the two-lordship qualification of Sl. 145-148.
Strength changes the reading
After dignity, the second lordship decides most. Virgo and Pisces rising put the Lagna lord into the 11th along with the 10th lordship; Cancer and Capricorn rising bring the 5th, a trine; Taurus rising brings the 9th. Combustion and company come next.
From the 11th, every graha aspects the 5th. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 2nd and the 6th; a Jupiter the 3rd and the 7th; a Saturn the 1st and the 8th, so for Aries and Taurus rising a Saturn 10th lord in the 11th looks at the Lagna.
Pisces rising shows how much the sign changes a favourable verse. Jupiter there owns the 1st and the 10th, two angles; in Capricorn it is at its weakest. By Sl. 145-148 the verse comes through at about a quarter, and Ch. 34's note that a benefic owning Kendras does not give benefic effects is a second qualification on top of the first.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 11th lord in the 10th (Sl. 130), reads as honoured by the king, virtuous, attached to religion, intelligent, truthful and master of the senses. Both together are a parivartana between two upachayas. The 10th lord in the 10th (Sl. 118) is about skill, and the 10th lord in the 12th (Sl. 120) about expenditure and worry; Sl. 119 is where the 10th lord's work pays.
Worked example: Pisces rising, Jupiter in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search found: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 23.04. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Pisces rising the 10th house is Sagittarius, so the 10th lord is Jupiter, which is also the Lagna lord.
- The 11th house is Capricorn. Jupiter is there at 2.09 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 2, "Debilitated", and combust.
- The Sun shares Capricorn at 5.46. The 11th lord Saturn is in Scorpio in the 9th, with Ketu.
- The Moon and Mercury are together in Sagittarius, the 10th; the engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for that pair.
This is the table's weakest row in practice: a debilitated and combust 10th lord that is also the Lagna lord. On Sl. 145-148's scale Sl. 119 would come through at a quarter or less. The 10th house itself is not empty, though: the Moon (lord of the 5th, a trine) and Mercury (lord of the 4th and 7th, two angles) sit in it, and the engine reports their Kendra-Kona link. The engine also reports a Parivarthana between Mars and Saturn (Mars in Aquarius, Saturn in Scorpio). The chart is a reminder that the 10th lord is one input to a reading of the 10th house, not the only one.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 11th house in 252, or 8.4%. That is a count of moments, not people.

- The verse names wealth as a classical tendency. This app does not forecast income from a placement.
- Is the 11th lord's evil lordship a problem here?

- Which Ascendants give the strongest and weakest versions?
- By sign, Aries rising is strongest (Saturn in its own Aquarius); Pisces rising is weakest (Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn).
- What does Ch. 40 Sl. 2 add?
- It says that if the 10th and 11th houses are free of malefics and the 11th is aspected by its own lord, the native becomes a chief in the king\'s court. It is about the 11th lord\'s aspect, not this placement, and the engine does not test it.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 252 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.4%.
