In short

The 10th lord in the 10th house is the ruler of work and rank sitting in its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 118 reads it as skilful in all work, valorous, truthful and devoted to elders. The planet is always in its own sign there, and for ten of the twelve Ascendants that alone forms one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas.

What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 10th house" is the planet that rules the house of work, rank and public deeds, sitting in that house itself. A house lord at home is the simplest case in Ch. 24: the house's affairs stay with their owner.

In whole-sign houses (whole-sign houses) a lord in its own house is always in its own sign (swakshetra), sometimes also moolatrikona or exalted by degree. The 10th is a Kendra, so this is an own-sign planet in an angle, the exact shape of the Panchamahapurusha rule.

The house involved

Only one house is involved: the 10th house (Karma Bhava), read for work, status, authority and deeds. Its page covers its significations. The house from which it is counted, the Ascendant, has its own page, the 1st house (Tanu Bhava).

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 10th

Ch. 24 Sl. 118: if the lord of Karm is in the Karm Bhava, the native "will be skilful in all jobs", valorous, truthful and devoted to elders. The bphs-alt text agrees. Compared with the 10th lord's royal verses for the 9th and the 1st, Sl. 118 is modest: it is about competence and character, not office. That fits the general shape of Ch. 24, where a lord at home strengthens its own house's qualities rather than importing another's.

Sl. 145-148 still apply. Own sign is good dignity, but combustion, company and the second lordship all count toward strength, and a planet owning two houses gives the results of both.

The own-sign Raj Yoga and the Bhrigu commentary

Ch. 39 Sl. 21 says that if the 10th lord, in its own or exaltation sign, aspects the Lagna, a Raj Yoga is formed. From the 10th, the 7th aspect falls on the 4th, not the Lagna, so most 10th lords at home do not meet it. Mars does: its special 4th-house aspect from the 10th lands on the 1st. So for Cancer rising (Mars in Aries) and Aquarius rising (Mars in Scorpio), the 10th lord in the 10th satisfies Sl. 21 by the aspect rules this app uses.

The Bhrigu Sutras have no sutra on lordship, but the editor's commentary in this corpus edition singles out several cases: the Moon in Cancer for Libra rising, "the Lord of the tenth will be in the tenth house, giving rise to a powerful Rajayoga"; Mars in its own sign in the 10th; and Saturn in its own sign in the 10th for Aries and Taurus rising. Saravali has no verse on the lordship.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's table. Because the 10th sign is the lord's own sign, the dignity column never falls below own sign; moolatrikona or exaltation is decided by degree.

The 10th lord and the 10th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Sagittarius rising is the only row where exaltation is possible: Mercury in Virgo is exalted in the early degrees. Six rows can be moolatrikona by degree. The second-lordship column is where the rows differ: Saturn for Aries rising owns the 11th, for Taurus the 9th; Mars for Cancer and Venus for Capricorn own the 5th (both yogakarakas); Jupiter for Gemini and Mercury for Sagittarius own the 7th; Mercury for Virgo and Jupiter for Pisces are the Lagna lord; Venus for Leo and Mars for Aquarius own the 3rd.

Ten Panchamahapurusha yogas

Because every 10th lord here is in its own sign in a Kendra, the engine's Panchamahapurusha test fires for every Ascendant whose 10th lord is not a luminary: Sasa for Aries and Taurus rising (Saturn), Hamsa for Gemini and Pisces (Jupiter), Ruchaka for Cancer and Aquarius (Mars), Malavya for Leo and Capricorn (Venus) and Bhadra for Virgo and Sagittarius (Mercury). Libra and Scorpio rising, where the 10th lord is the Moon or the Sun, are the two exceptions.

The two luminary rows

Libra and Scorpio rising are the exceptions in more than the yoga count. For Libra rising the 10th lord is the Moon, in its own Cancer; for Scorpio rising it is the Sun, in Leo, moolatrikona by degree. Neither owns a second house, so Sl. 118 applies to them without the "two lordships" qualification of Sl. 145-148: there is nothing to cancel or vary it. The Bhrigu commentary's first example, the Moon in Cancer for Libra rising, is exactly this row. The Panchamahapurusha rule leaves the luminaries out, so the engine reports no yoga by name for these two rows even though the placement is as strong by sign as any other.

The other rows each bring a second house into the 10th. Where that house is a trine (the 5th for Cancer and Capricorn rising, the 9th for Taurus) or the Lagna (Virgo, Pisces), the two lordships agree. Where it is the 3rd or the 11th (Leo, Aquarius, Aries), Ch. 34 calls the second lordship evil, and Sl. 7 of that chapter says the 10th, as the predominant house, stalls it.

Strength changes the reading

With dignity fixed by sign, combustion and company decide. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also apply: benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects and malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious. A Jupiter 10th lord at home that also owns the 7th (Gemini rising) is the benefic owning two angles, the case Ch. 34 treats with most reserve.

Aspects from the 10th: every graha aspects the 4th. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 1st and the 5th; a Jupiter the 2nd and the 6th; a Saturn the 12th and the 7th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

There is no reverse placement. The 10th lord in the 9th (Sl. 117) is the chapter's royal verse, and the 10th lord in the 11th (Sl. 119) gives wealth, happiness and children. The 9th lord in the 9th (Sl. 105) is the comparable own-house verse for fortune.

Worked example: Leo rising, Venus in Taurus

The engine's deterministic search found: 2 July 1985, 10:20 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 18.67. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Leo rising the 10th house is Taurus, so the 10th lord is Venus, which also owns Libra, the 3rd.
  • Venus is in Taurus at 1.97 degrees, Krittika pada 2, in the 10th, "Own sign"; not retrograde, not combust.
  • The engine reports Malavya Yoga for it (Venus in its own sign in a Kendra) and Amala Yoga (an unafflicted benefic in the 10th).
  • The Lagna lord Sun and the 9th lord Mars are together in Gemini in the 11th; Saturn is exalted in Libra in the 3rd.

This is the own-sign case the table promises, and on Sl. 145-148's scale an uncombust, own-sign Venus gives Sl. 118 at full strength. Its other lordship, the 3rd, is one Ch. 34 calls evil, so the chapter's "varied results" applies. Ch. 39 Sl. 21 does not: Venus's only aspect from the 10th falls on the 4th, not the Lagna. The engine's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga in this chart comes from the Sun and Mars together in the 11th, not from Venus.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 10th house in 258, or 8.6%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Questions about the 10th lord in the 10th

What does BPHS say about the 10th lord in its own house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 118: skilful in all work, valorous, truthful and devoted to elders, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Does it always form a Panchamahapurusha yoga?
For ten Ascendants, yes, in this app: the 10th lord is in its own sign in a Kendra. For Libra and Scorpio rising the 10th lord is the Moon or the Sun, which the rule does not include.
Is it a Raj Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 21 calls it one when the own-sign 10th lord aspects the Lagna, which by this app's aspect rules only Mars does from the 10th (Cancer and Aquarius rising). See what a yoga in your chart means.
Does it guarantee a successful career?
No. The verse speaks of skill and character, and this app does not forecast careers from a placement.
How common is it?
It occurred in 258 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6%.
