In short

The 10th lord in the 9th house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the trine of fortune, dharma and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 117 gives it one of the chapter's strongest readings: one of royal birth becomes a king, an ordinary person becomes equal to one, with wealth and children. This app reports Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th lord sits there too.

What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 9th house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of fortune, the father, teachers and dharma. The house of deeds carries its affairs into the house of merit.

The 10th is a Kendra and the 9th a trikona, so this is the angle lord in the strongest trine. Counted from the 10th, the 9th is the 12th, the sign just behind it. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, the father, the guru and religious merit.

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 9th

Ch. 24 Sl. 117: if the lord of Karm is in the Dharm Bhava, "one born of royal scion will become a king, whereas an ordinary native will be equal to a king", and the placement will confer wealth and the happiness of children. The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse is unusual in making its result depend on the person's starting point: the same placement gives a different outcome according to birth. Read in modern terms, it describes rising to the top of whatever station one starts from; it is not a forecast of office.

Sl. 145-148 qualify it like every verse: full, half or a quarter of the result by strength, and both lordships read for a planet that owns two houses.

The 9th and 10th lords in BPHS's yoga chapters

Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count a Kendra lord in a Kon among the links that cause a yoga. Ch. 39 is more specific. Sl. 37 says the 4th or 10th lord joining the 5th or 9th lord gives a kingdom; with the 10th lord in the 9th, the 9th lord at home beside it meets that directly. Sl. 36 names a fuller version: the lords of the 1st, 4th, 5th and 10th all in the 9th give a ruler "with fame, spreading over the four directions". Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that grahas joined with the 9th lord give wealth in their Dasha periods.

This app tests the pairing as Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga: the 9th and 10th lords in the same house, that house a Kendra or Kona. With the 10th lord in the 9th, it fires exactly when the 9th lord is in its own 9th as well. Its broader Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga fires for any Kona lord joined with it, or in mutual aspect from the 3rd. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on this placement.

The 10th lord and the 9th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Taurus rising is the special row: Saturn owns both the 9th (Capricorn) and the 10th (Aquarius), and in the 9th it is in its own sign, so a single planet is both partners of the Dharma-Karmadhipati pair, at home. Capricorn rising is the weak row: Venus, the yogakaraka owning the 5th and 10th, falls debilitated in Virgo. No row is an enemy sign and six are friendly: Cancer (Mars in Pisces), Virgo (Mercury in Taurus), Libra (the Moon in Gemini), Scorpio (the Sun in Cancer), Sagittarius (Mercury in Leo) and Pisces (Jupiter in Scorpio). By sign, this is one of the 10th lord's best-supported placements.

Rows where two trines meet in the 9th

For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 10th lord also owns the 5th, so a 10th lord in the 9th puts the lord of one trine and one angle into the other trine. For Cancer rising that planet is Mars in Pisces, a friendly sign, and the 9th lord Jupiter rules Pisces itself, so Mars is a guest of the 9th lord. For Capricorn rising it is Venus in Virgo, debilitated, and the 9th lord Mercury rules Virgo; Venus is then a weak guest of a planet that is its natural friend. Ch. 39 Sl. 37 asks for the 10th lord to join the 9th lord, so in both rows the question is whether the 9th lord is at home in the 9th. If it is, the engine's Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga fires as well.

For Virgo and Pisces rising the 10th lord is also the Lagna lord, so the person's own ruler sits in the house of fortune; Ch. 24 Sl. 9 reads the Lagna lord in the 9th as fortunate, dear to people, skilful and eloquent. Sl. 145-148 say a planet owning two houses gives the results of both, and here the two verses point the same way.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, the second lordship counts. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 10th lord also owns the 5th, so two trines' and an angle's affairs meet in the 9th. For Virgo and Pisces rising it is also the Lagna lord. For Aries rising Saturn also owns the 11th, and for Leo and Aquarius rising the 10th lord owns the 3rd, lordships Ch. 34 calls evil and Sl. 15 says do not join Raj Yogas by mere relation.

From the 9th, every graha aspects the 3rd. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 12th and the 4th; a Jupiter the 1st and the 5th, so a Jupiter 10th lord in the 9th watches the Lagna and the other trine; a Saturn the 11th and the 6th.

The derived count, the 9th as the 12th from the 10th, is sometimes used to read loss in this placement. Sl. 117 says nothing of the kind, and this page does not borrow the argument; the verse is among the most favourable in the chapter.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 10th (Sl. 106), is a king or his equal, a minister or an army chief. Both together are a parivartana between the 9th and 10th lords, the exchange form of the same pairing. The 10th lord in the 8th (Sl. 116) is about inactivity and long life and the 10th lord in the 10th (Sl. 118) about skill and truthfulness. Sl. 117 is the summit of the 10th lord's twelve verses.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Mars and Venus in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search found: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 4.31. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Cancer rising the 10th house is Aries, so the 10th lord is Mars, which also owns Scorpio, the 5th: the Cancer yogakaraka.
  • The 9th house is Pisces. Mars is there at 9.17 degrees, Uttara Bhadrapada pada 2, not retrograde, not combust, "Friendly sign".
  • Venus shares Pisces at 10.05, "Exalted"; for Cancer rising Venus owns the 4th and the 11th.
  • The 9th lord Jupiter is in Capricorn in the 7th, "Debilitated"; the Lagna lord, the Moon, is in Leo in the 2nd.

The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus and Mars together: Venus owns the 4th, an angle, and Mars the 5th, a trine. Read against Ch. 39 Sl. 37, that is the 4th lord joining the 5th lord, here in the 9th. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga does not form, because the 9th lord, Jupiter, is in the 7th, not with Mars. On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, uncombust yogakaraka in the 9th, joined by an exalted angle lord, is a strong case for Sl. 117, weighed against a debilitated 9th lord elsewhere.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 9th house in 249, or 8.3%. That is a property of sampled moments, not of people.
