In short

The 10th lord in the 8th house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the house of longevity, obstacles and the hidden. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 116 reads it as devoid of acts, long-lived and given to blaming others. The verse is scaled by strength, and by sign the table is mixed: two exalted rows, one debilitated and five in enemy signs.

What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 8th house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of longevity, sudden events, inheritance and what is hidden. The house of deeds carries its affairs into the most concealed of the dusthanas.

The 8th is a dusthana. Counted from the 10th it is the 11th, the house of gains relative to work, an odd pairing with the verse below. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is the house of longevity, obstacles and unearned or hidden matters. BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 name the 3rd and 8th as the two houses of longevity.

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 8th

Ch. 24 Sl. 116: if the lord of Karm is in the Randhr Bhava, the native "will be devoid of acts, long-lived and intent on blaming others". The bphs-alt text agrees. The three clauses are easy to trace: "acts" are the 10th house's matter, and the 10th lord has gone into hiding; long life is the 8th house's own signification; blame is the kind of hidden friction the 8th is read for. This is the text's claim and is reported here as such.

It is also a verse with one clause that most readers would count as favourable: long life. BPHS's closing verses, Sl. 145-148, scale all three clauses by strength, and say that a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling and varied ones both occurring.

Relief named in the neighbouring verse

The reverse placement's verse, Sl. 94 (the 8th lord in the 10th), closes with a sentence BPHS does not repeat for Sl. 116: "If there is a Drishti in the process from a benefic, then these evils will not mature." The text gives that relief to its own placement only, and this page does not transfer it; but it shows the kind of modifier BPHS has in mind for lord-in-dusthana readings. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds that a Kendra or Kon lord that also owns an evil house does not form a Raj Yoga by mere relation. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 10th lord in the 8th.

The 10th lord and the 8th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Two rows are exalted: Leo rising (Venus in Pisces, though Venus also owns the 3rd) and Libra rising (the Moon in Taurus, a luminary with no other house). Gemini rising puts Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn, and Jupiter there owns the 7th and 10th, two angles. Five rows are enemy signs: Saturn in Scorpio (Aries rising), Mercury in Cancer (Sagittarius), Venus in Leo (Capricorn, where Venus is the yogakaraka), Mars in Virgo (Aquarius) and Jupiter in Libra (Pisces, where Jupiter is also the Lagna lord). By sign this is among the weakest of the 10th lord's tables.

The lordship pairs that land in the 8th

Reading the second-lordship column row by row shows how differently the same verse arrives. For Gemini rising, a debilitated Jupiter owning two angles (7th and 10th) sits in the 8th: both Kendra lordships weak in a dusthana. For Capricorn rising, Venus, the yogakaraka owning the 5th and 10th, is in Leo, an enemy sign. For Pisces rising, Jupiter is both the Lagna lord and the 10th lord and sits in Libra, an enemy sign, so the person's own ruler is weak in the 8th. For Libra rising the Moon is exalted in Taurus but rules nothing else, and Sl. 116 then has no second lordship to vary it. For Aries rising Saturn owns the 10th and 11th and is in Scorpio, an enemy sign; the 11th is one of the lordships Ch. 34 calls evil.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 116 is unfavourable, dignity under Sl. 145-148 works in an unusual direction: a strong 10th lord gives the verse more fully, and what can offset it is a favourable second lordship. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 10th lord also owns the 5th; for Taurus rising, the 9th; for Virgo and Pisces rising it is the Lagna lord, so the person's own ruler sits in the 8th. Each of those brings results the chapter says can cancel or vary the verse.

Company is the other measure. Benefics with the 10th lord, or aspecting it, are the modifier BPHS names in the reverse verse. From the 8th the 10th lord itself aspects the 2nd; a Mars 10th lord also aspects the 11th and 3rd, a Jupiter the 12th and 4th, a Saturn the 10th and 5th, so a Saturn 10th lord in the 8th looks back at its own house.

The derived count, the 8th as the 11th from the 10th, is sometimes used to argue for gains through work behind the scenes. That is not in Sl. 116, and this page reports only what the verse says.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 8th lord in the 10th (Sl. 94), reads as devoid of paternal bliss, a talebearer, without livelihood, unless a benefic aspects it. Both together are a parivartana between a dusthana and an angle. The 10th lord in the 7th (Sl. 115) gives happiness through the spouse and the 10th lord in the 9th (Sl. 117) is one of the chapter's royal verses, so Sl. 116 sits between a good and an outstanding reading.

Worked example: Leo rising, exalted Venus in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search found: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Leo rising the 10th house is Taurus, so the 10th lord is Venus, which also owns Libra, the 3rd.
  • The 8th house is Pisces. Venus is there at 17.46 degrees, Revati pada 1, not retrograde, not combust, "Exalted".
  • Mars, the 4th and 9th lord (the Leo yogakaraka), shares Pisces at 15.99.
  • The Lagna lord, the Sun, is in Aquarius in the 7th; Jupiter, the 5th and 8th lord, is debilitated in Capricorn in the 6th.

This is the strong-planet case of an unfavourable verse: an exalted 10th lord in the 8th, which Sl. 145-148 would read as giving Sl. 116 fully, while its other lordship, the 3rd, is one Ch. 34 calls evil and so does not offset it. The company is the counterweight. The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus and Mars together; Mars owns the 9th, a trine, and the 4th, an angle, and is the strongest lordship in a Leo chart. A reader following BPHS would weigh Ch. 34 Sl. 15 against that link, since Venus also owns an evil house and the link is formed in a dusthana. The engine separately reports Sarala Yoga through Jupiter, the 8th lord, in the 6th.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 8th house in 281, or 9.4%, above one in twelve. That is a count of sampled moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 10th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the eighth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity and second lordship.
  4. Note benefics that join or aspect it, the modifier BPHS names in the reverse verse.
