In short
The 10th lord in the 7th house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the angle of marriage and partnership. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 115 reads it as happiness through the spouse, with intelligence, virtue, eloquence, truthfulness and religion. Both houses are angles BPHS calls "specially for happiness", and for four Ascendants the placement alone forms a Panchamahapurusha yoga.
What the placement means
"The 10th lord in the 7th house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of the spouse, business partners and dealings with others. The lord carries the 10th house's affairs into the 7th.
Both are Kendras. Counted from the 10th, the 7th is the 10th: the lord of work sits in the "work of work", an angle from an angle. From the 7th, every graha aspects the 1st, so a 10th lord here always looks at the Lagna. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is the angle of marriage, partnership and others in general.
What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 7th
Ch. 24 Sl. 115: if the lord of Karm is in the Yuvati Bhava, the native "will be endowed with happiness through wife", and will be intelligent, virtuous, eloquent, truthful and religious. The bphs-alt text agrees. Like the chapter as a whole, the verse addresses a male native; read in the neutral terms this app uses, it describes happiness through the spouse alongside five personal qualities. It is one of the few 10th-lord verses with no material clause at all: no wealth, no rank, only character and a good marriage.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, and both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.
Two angles "specially for happiness"
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 single out the 7th and 10th: among the Kendras they are "specially for happiness". A 10th lord in the 7th joins the two. The same passage carries the caution that benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects, and Sl. 8-10 rank the benefics' Kendra-lordship weakness in ascending order, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 10th lord also owns the 7th (Jupiter and Mercury respectively), so a benefic owning both of the "happiness" angles sits in one of them, the case in which that caution applies most.
Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse on this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).
| Ascendant | 10th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Libra | Exalted | 11th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Scorpio | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 7th |
| Cancer | Mars | Capricorn | Exalted | 5th |
| Leo | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Virgo | Mercury | Pisces | Debilitated | 1st |
| Libra | Moon | Aries | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Sun | Taurus | Enemy sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Gemini | Own sign | 7th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Cancer | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Aquarius | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Virgo | Enemy sign | 1st |
The table is sharply divided. Four rows are strong: Aries rising (Saturn exalted in Libra), Cancer rising (Mars exalted in Capricorn, the Cancer yogakaraka), Gemini rising (Jupiter in its own Sagittarius, moolatrikona by degree) and Sagittarius rising (Mercury in its own Gemini). Virgo rising puts Mercury, which is also the Lagna lord, debilitated in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs: Saturn in Scorpio (Taurus), the Sun in Taurus (Scorpio), Venus in Cancer (Capricorn) and Jupiter in Virgo (Pisces).
Panchamahapurusha cases
Because the 7th is a Kendra, the four strong rows each form one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas in this app's sense (a non-luminary planet in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign in a Kendra): Sasa Yoga for Aries rising, Ruchaka Yoga for Cancer rising, Hamsa Yoga for Gemini rising and Bhadra Yoga for Sagittarius rising. The yoga comes from the planet's sign and house, not from its lordship, but the engine will report it whenever the 10th lord stands in the 7th for those Ascendants.
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 145-148 put dignity first, and the spread above means the verse runs from full to a quarter across the Ascendants. The second lordship matters as well: Saturn for Aries rising also owns the 11th, Venus for Leo rising the 3rd, Mars for Aquarius rising the 3rd. Those are the lordships Ch. 34 calls evil.
Aspects complete the picture. Every 10th lord in the 7th aspects the Lagna; a Saturn also aspects the 9th and the 4th; a Mars the 10th and the 2nd, so a Mars 10th lord in the 7th looks back at its own house; a Jupiter the 11th and the 3rd. For the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 sends the reader to the Navamsa; the 10th lord's sign in the Navamsa (D9) is the usual cross-check, which the Navamsa calculator computes.
The difference between Sl. 115 and the reverse verse is worth stating plainly, because the two are often merged. Sl. 115 (the 10th lord in the 7th) gives happiness through the spouse and five virtues. Sl. 82 (the 7th lord in the 10th) gives religion, wealth and children, with a spouse who does not defer. Neither verse says the spouse brings a career or that work is done with a partner; those are later inferences from the houses, not the text. BPHS also leaves the timing open: Ch. 24 gives no age or period for either verse, so any timing has to come from the Dasha of the planet involved.
Virgo rising is the instructive weak row. Mercury there is the Lagna lord and the 10th lord, and in the 7th it falls in Pisces, its sign of debilitation. Both of the person's Kendra lordships that Mercury carries are therefore at their weakest in the house of the spouse, and the full verse would, by the chapter's own scale, come through at about a quarter. BPHS has rules for cancellation of debilitation elsewhere; this page does not apply them.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 10th (Sl. 82), is a religious person with wealth and children, with a spouse who does not defer, and the first condition of Shrinath Yoga. Both together are a parivartana between the two "happiness" angles. The 10th lord in the 6th (Sl. 114) is about enemies and lack of wealth and the 10th lord in the 8th (Sl. 116) about inactivity and long life; the 7th is the favourable placement between two difficult ones.
Worked example: Taurus rising, Saturn in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search returned: 28 January 1985, 13:51 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Taurus 20.77. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Taurus rising the 10th house is Aquarius, so the 10th lord is Saturn, which also owns Capricorn, the 9th.
- The 7th house is Scorpio. Saturn is there at 3.26 degrees, Vishakha pada 4, "Enemy sign"; Ketu is in Scorpio too.
- The Lagna lord Venus is exalted in Pisces in the 11th.
- The engine reports a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga: the 9th and 10th lords are one planet, so they are necessarily "together", in the 7th, a Kendra.
Taurus is the enemy-sign row of the table, so on Sl. 145-148's scale Sl. 115 would come through at a reduced share, while the same Saturn carries the 9th lordship, a trine, with it. From the 7th it aspects the 1st, the 9th and the 4th: the Lagna, its other own house, and the 4th. Sasa Yoga does not form because Scorpio is not Saturn's own or exaltation sign. The chart is a useful contrast with the four strong rows: the same verse, the same house, but a planet at the other end of the dignity scale.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 7th house in 248, or 8.3%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Questions about the 10th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 10th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 115: happiness through the spouse, with intelligence, virtue, eloquence, truthfulness and religion. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength.
- Does it mean working with a spouse or in partnership?
- The verse does not say so. It speaks of happiness through the spouse and personal qualities. This app does not predict business arrangements from a placement.
- When does it form a Panchamahapurusha yoga?
- For Aries (Saturn exalted: Sasa), Cancer (Mars exalted: Ruchaka), Gemini (Jupiter in Sagittarius: Hamsa) and Sagittarius rising (Mercury in Gemini: Bhadra), because the planet is then in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra.
- Is a benefic 10th lord in the 7th better?
- BPHS Ch. 34 says benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects, and Jupiter and Venus show it most. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising, the 10th lord owns both the 7th and the 10th, the case where that caution applies most.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 248 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3%.
