In short
The 8th lord in the 10th house brings the ruler of obstruction into the house of career, rank and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 94 reads it adversely - little happiness from the father, talebearing, and no livelihood - but adds that a benefic aspect on the placement keeps those results from maturing. That built-in condition makes it unusual among the Randhr verses.
What the placement means
The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 10th sign, it carries the 8th's themes - obstruction, sudden change, loss - into the house of profession, rank, public standing and, in BPHS's own verses for the 10th, the father.
Counted from the 8th, the 10th is the 3rd house. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered the strongest angle, which is also an upachaya. BPHS reads the result adversely, but - unusually for the Randhr series - writes a way out into the verse itself.
The two houses involved
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in Ch. 44.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is a kendra and an upachaya: action, career, rank and authority.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 94
Sl. 94 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Karm Bhava, the native will be devoid of paternal bliss, be a talebearer and be bereft of livelihood. If there is a Drishti in the process from a benefic, then these evils will not mature." The first sentence is adverse; the second conditionally cancels it.
Each adverse clause takes one of the 10th's goods: the father ("paternal bliss"), honest public speech ("talebearer" is the opposite), and work ("livelihood"). The second sentence is what makes the verse distinctive. Most Ch. 24 verses leave modification to the closing rule on strength; Sl. 94 names a specific condition, a benefic's aspect, under which the adverse results "will not mature". The verse is the text's statement about a combination, not a forecast about anyone's career or father.
The reverse is mixed. Sl. 116, Karm's lord in Randhr, gives a person "devoid of acts", "long-lived and intent on blaming others". Both directions touch work and reputation; only Sl. 94 offers a condition that switches its results off.
What counts as a benefic aspect
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 define the natural benefics: Jupiter and Venus, with Mercury neutral (a benefic when with benefics) and the Moon "mediocre in benefice", stronger when full. A planet aspects the sign seven from itself; Jupiter also aspects the 5th and 9th from itself (drishti). So for the 10th, a benefic aspect means Jupiter, Venus, an associated Mercury or a strong Moon in the 4th, or Jupiter in the 6th or 2nd. Sl. 94 does not say whether the 8th lord itself, if a benefic, counts; read literally, the aspect must come from another planet.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the 8th lord's own rule: "not auspicious"; "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th; auspicious if it also owns a trine; "not evil" for the Sun and Moon. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 10th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Capricorn | Exalted | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Aquarius | Neutral | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Pisces | Neutral | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Aries | Debilitated | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Gemini | Enemy sign | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Cancer | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Leo | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Virgo | Friendly sign | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Libra | Debilitated | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Sagittarius | Neutral | 3rd |
Aries rising puts Mars - the Lagna and 8th lord - exalted in Capricorn in the 10th. Two rows are debilitated: Cancer rising (Saturn, lord of the 7th and 8th, in Aries) and Capricorn rising (the Sun in Libra). Leo, Virgo and Libra rising put the lord in an enemy sign.
The second lordship's Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Karm is usually favourable and often directly contrary to Sl. 94. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 58: "will enjoy a Raj Yog". As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 10: paternal happiness, royal honour, fame, self-earned wealth - contrary to Sl. 94 on the father, so the two cancel there. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 106: a king or his equal, a minister. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 130: honoured, virtuous, religious, truthful. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 34: all kinds of happiness and self-made wealth. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 82: religion, wealth and children, with an independent spouse.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share.
- A benefic aspect, which by Sl. 94's own wording stops the adverse results from maturing.
- The second lordship and its verse, as above.
The natural class of the 8th lord itself varies: a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun); a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus); Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius; the Moon for Sagittarius. Planet-level pages such as Jupiter in the 10th and Saturn in the 10th describe these planets in the 10th without lordship.
Sl. 94's condition also changes how strength should be read. In most adverse verses a stronger lord simply delivers more of the verse. Here the verse itself says the adverse results "will not mature" under a benefic aspect, so a reader weighing a chart asks two separate questions: how strong is the 8th lord, and is it seen by a benefic? Only the second appears in the verse; the first comes from the chapter's closing rule. The Aries row illustrates the point. Mars there is exalted in the 10th - strong by any measure - and it is also the Lagna lord, whose verse (Sl. 10) is favourable; but whether Sl. 94's adverse half matures still turns, by the verse's own words, on a benefic's aspect.
Worked example: Taurus rising, Jupiter in Aquarius
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 17 May 1986, 05:55 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Taurus 8.1.
- With Taurus rising, the 8th house is Sagittarius and the 11th is Pisces; Jupiter rules both. The 10th is Aquarius.
- Jupiter is in Aquarius at 24.51 degrees, Purva Bhadrapada pada 2, in the 10th. The engine marks it Friendly sign.
- The Moon, at Leo 1.87 in the 4th, aspects the 10th. The Sun is at Taurus 2.16, so the Moon is roughly a quarter-circle ahead of it - waxing, not full.
- No other planet aspects the 10th.
Does Sl. 94's benefic-aspect condition hold? The only aspect is the Moon's, and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 call the Moon only "mediocre in benefice", stronger when full; this Moon is about half full. The text does not settle whether that counts, and this page leaves it open. On lordship, Jupiter owns the 8th and 11th - the "specifically harmful" kind - and Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 list Jupiter among the malefics for Vrishabh Lagn. Sl. 130, the 11th lord in Karm, is favourable and contradicts Sl. 94, so by Sl. 145-148 they cancel where they conflict. The engine reports Amala Yoga for Jupiter, Gaj Kesari Yoga for Jupiter and the Moon in mutual angles, and Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga for Saturn.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 10th house in 285, or 9.5%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 10th lord in the 8th (Sl. 116), is summarised above; together the lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 8th lord in the 9th (Sl. 93) is harsh on religion; one house on, the 8th lord in the 11th (Sl. 95) also turns on malefic or benefic company. The other angle placements are the 1st, the 4th and the 7th.
