In short

The 8th lord in the 1st house brings the ruler of longevity, obstruction and hidden matters onto the self and body. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 85 reads it adversely: little bodily ease, injuries, and irreverence toward religious authority. BPHS Ch. 34 then makes the 8th lord's character depend on its other house, which for this placement ranges from the Lagna lord itself to the 11th.

What the placement means

The 8th house lord is the planet ruling the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the rising sign, it brings the 8th's themes - longevity, sudden change, obstruction, inheritance, what is hidden - onto the self and the body.

Counted from the 8th, the 1st is the 6th house, a dusthana from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered the most important house of the chart. The 1st and 8th are also the two houses Ch. 24 most often ties to the body itself.

The two houses involved

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and, with the 3rd, a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the self, the body and vitality - both a kendra and a trikona.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 85

Sl. 85 opens the Randhr series: "If Randhr's Lord is in Tanu Bhava, the native will be devoid of physical felicity and will suffer from wounds." It continues with a clause about hostility toward the gods and the priestly class, which this page summarises as irreverence toward religious authority. All three clauses are adverse.

The bodily clauses - little ease, injuries - follow directly from the 8th's character arriving in the house of the body. They are classical associations reported as what the text says, not medical advice and not a forecast. The religious clause is the 8th's reputation in Ch. 34 at work: the 8th is "the 12th from Dharm Bhava", the loss-house of religion, and its lord in the self is read as turning the person against it. That reading of the clause is this page's, set beside the text's own explanation of the 8th.

The reverse is longer and more mixed. Sl. 8, Lagn's lord in Randhr, gives "an accomplished scholar", but also sickly, quick to anger and several harsher traits. Between them, the two verses tie the 1st-8th link to the body, with scholarship as the reverse's one compensation.

When an 8th lord helps and when it harms

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 give the 8th lord a rule of its own. It "is not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava". If it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, it "will prove specifically harmful"; if it also owns a trine, it "will bestow auspicious effects"; and "Randhr's lordship of Sūrya and Candr is not evil". So the same Sl. 85 is carried by planets the text expects quite different things from. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 add strength (full, half, a quarter) and the combination of both lordships, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse for this placement.

The 8th lord and the rising sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Read the last column through Ch. 34. For Aries and Libra rising the 8th lord is also the Lagna lord (Mars, Venus), and since the 1st is a trine as well as an angle, that is the "auspicious" case - and the placement is simply the Lagna lord in its own sign. Gemini (9th), Leo and Aquarius (5th) also give the 8th lord a trine. Taurus and Scorpio (11th), Cancer (7th), Virgo and Pisces (3rd) are the "specifically harmful" rows. Sagittarius and Capricorn rising make the 8th lord a luminary, the case Ch. 34 says "is not evil". By dignity, Pisces rising puts Venus exalted in the Lagna; four rows are enemy signs.

The second lordship also brings its own Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Tanu. As the Lagna lord at home (Aries, Libra), Sl. 1: physical happiness and prowess, intelligence. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 97: fortunate, honoured, learned. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 49: scholarly, with children, but miserly. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 121: rich, happy, eloquent, always gaining. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 73, and 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 25. Where these contradict Sl. 85, Sl. 145-148 say the two cancel.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share.
  • The second house, read through Ch. 34's 8th-lord rule as above.
  • Association: the 1st receives the 7th aspect from the 7th, and specially from Mars (10th, 6th), Jupiter (9th, 5th) and Saturn (11th, 4th) - see drishti.

The Lagna lord's own condition is the counterweight. With the 8th lord in the rising sign, the 1st lord is elsewhere (except for Aries and Libra, where they are the same planet), and its strength is the other half of the self's reading. The planet-in-house pages - Mercury in the 1st, Jupiter in the 1st - describe the planet in the Lagna without lordship.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mercury in the Lagna

This is the engine's first search moment, re-enterable in the birth chart calculator: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 28.81.

  • With Scorpio rising, the 8th house is Gemini and the 11th is Virgo; Mercury rules both.
  • Mercury is in Scorpio at 24.36 degrees, Jyeshtha pada 3, in the 1st. The engine marks it Friendly sign in this chart.
  • Saturn (Scorpio 1.09, ruler of the 3rd and 4th) and Ketu (Scorpio 1.51) share the Lagna.
  • The Lagna lord, Mars, is in Aquarius in the 4th.

This is a "specifically harmful" row by Ch. 34: Mercury owns the 8th and the 11th. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 also list Mercury among the malefics for Vrischik Lagn. Two Ch. 24 verses apply - Sl. 85 for the 8th lord in Tanu and Sl. 121 for the 11th lord in Tanu (rich, happy, eloquent, "always endowed with gains") - and they contradict each other on ease and fortune, so by Sl. 145-148 they cancel there. The engine's yoga detector reports Vasi Yoga, in which Mercury is one of the planets flanking the Sun, and a Parivarthana Yoga between Mars and Saturn; neither concerns the 8th lordship.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 1st house in 227, or 7.6%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 1st lord in the 8th (Sl. 8), is summarised above; together they would be an exchange across the 1st-8th relationship (parivartana). One house on, the 8th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 86) reduces vigour and wealth; one house back, the 8th lord in the 12th (Sl. 96) is harsh but also a Vipareeta condition. The 8th lord at home, the 8th lord in the 8th, is the longevity verse.

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Check the birth chart for the 8th lord in the rising sign.
  3. Classify its other house by Ch. 34 (trine, 3rd/7th/11th, or a luminary) and read that verse beside Sl. 85.

Questions about the 8th lord in the 1st

What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 85: little physical ease, injuries, and irreverence toward religious authority. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength; not medical advice and not a forecast.
Is the 8th lord always bad?
BPHS Ch. 34 says the 8th lord is not auspicious, but becomes auspicious if it also owns a trine, specifically harmful if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, and not evil if it is the Sun or Moon.
What if my 8th lord is also my Lagna lord?
For Aries (Mars) and Libra (Venus) rising, the placement is the Lagna lord in its own sign. Ch. 34 treats that dual lordship as the auspicious case, and Sl. 1 applies beside Sl. 85.
Does this placement shorten life?
Sl. 85 does not speak of longevity. The 8th is a longevity house in BPHS Ch. 44, but this app does not make longevity predictions.
Why does BPHS say the Sun or Moon as 8th lord is not evil?
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 state it without a reason. It applies here for Sagittarius rising (the Moon) and Capricorn rising (the Sun), where the 8th lord rules nothing else.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest 8th lord in the Lagna?
By sign, Pisces: Venus is exalted there. It also owns the 3rd, which Ch. 34 lists among the combinations that make an 8th lord specifically harmful, so strength and lordship pull in different directions.
How common is it?
227 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.6%. That counts moments, not people.
