In short
The 8th lord in the 12th house puts the ruler of obstruction and longevity in the house of loss and expense, one dusthana lord in another. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 96 reads it harshly, as spending on wrongdoing and a shortened span. The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the same placement as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and this app's engine flags Sarala Yoga.
What the placement means
The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 12th sign, it carries the 8th's themes - obstruction, sudden change, longevity - into the house of expense, loss, foreign lands, seclusion and release.
Counted from the 8th, the 12th is the 5th house, a trine from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, both houses are dusthanas. As with the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, BPHS and the later Vipareeta rule disagree sharply about what this means.
The two houses involved
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.
The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is the third dusthana: loss, expense, foreign residence, confinement and liberation. Ch. 34 says its lord's results depend on association.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 96
Sl. 96 begins: "If Randhr's Lord is in Vyaya Bhava, the native will spend on evil deeds". It continues with a clause about a short span of life, strengthened if a malefic is also in the 12th. Both clauses are adverse.
Briefly and as the text's claim: the 12th's expenditure is turned toward wrongdoing, and the 8th's longevity is reduced, more so with malefic company. This page reports the longevity clause because it is in the verse; it is not a prediction, and this app does not compute or present lifespans. BPHS's actual longevity methods are in Ch. 43.
The reverse is strikingly different. Sl. 140, Vyaya's lord in Randhr, says the native "will always gain", will speak affably, will enjoy "a medium span of life" and be "endowed with all good qualities". In BPHS's own words, the 12th lord in the 8th is one of the brighter verses for a dusthana lord, while the 8th lord in the 12th is one of the darkest.
The Vipareeta rule names this placement
The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita, whose first condition is "lord of the 8th occupying the 12th or 6th", followed by the other dusthana lords and the case of the three "being connected in any way" by exchange, aspect or conjunction, free of relation with other planets. The result it names is fame and wealth. That is Vipareeta Raja Yoga; this app's engine flags the placement as Sarala Yoga every time, without testing the freedom-from-relation condition.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the 8th lord's rule: "not auspicious"; "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th; auspicious if it also owns a trine; and "Randhr's lordship of Sūrya and Candr is not evil". Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali has no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 12th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 12th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Pisces | Friendly sign | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Taurus | Friendly sign | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Cancer | Exalted | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Virgo | Debilitated | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Scorpio | Debilitated | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Capricorn | Neutral | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 3rd |
Leo rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 5th and 8th, exalted in Cancer - the auspicious kind of 8th lordship at full dignity. Two rows are debilitated: Libra rising (Venus, the Lagna and 8th lord, in Virgo) and Sagittarius rising (the Moon in Scorpio). Most other rows are friendly; none is an enemy sign.
The second lordship's Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Vyaya is mostly sombre too, so this placement rarely finds an offsetting verse. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 12: little physical happiness and unfruitful spending, unless a benefic aspects or joins. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 60: little happiness from one's own children. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 108: loss of fortune, spending on auspicious acts. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 36: spending on wrongdoing. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 84: penury, a spendthrift spouse. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 132: dependence on good deeds, with less flattering clauses. The relief, where it comes, comes from the Vipareeta reading, not from Ch. 24.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label. Read literally, a strong lord gives more of Sl. 96.
- Malefic company in the 12th, which Sl. 96 says intensifies the longevity clause; and freedom from other planets, which the Vipareeta condition asks for.
- Aspects: the 12th is aspected from the 6th, and specially by Mars (9th, 5th), Jupiter (8th, 4th) and Saturn (10th, 3rd) - see drishti.
The two sources therefore ask the same question about company and give opposite reasons. Sl. 96 worries about a malefic joining the lord; the Uttara Kalamrita condition wants the dusthana lords to stand apart from every other planet, or connected only to one another. A chart in which the 8th lord sits with the 6th or 12th lord and nothing else satisfies the second and may or may not trigger the first, depending on whether the companion is a natural malefic.
Worked example: Capricorn rising, the Sun in Sagittarius
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Capricorn 17.6.
- With Capricorn rising, the 8th house is Leo, ruled by the Sun alone. The 12th is Sagittarius.
- The Sun is in Sagittarius at 26.18 degrees, Purva Ashadha pada 4, in the 12th. The engine marks it Neutral.
- Mercury (Sagittarius 4.27, lord of the 6th and 9th) and Jupiter (Sagittarius 29.96, lord of the 3rd and 12th, Own sign, combust) share the 12th. No other planet is there.
- So all three dusthana lords - 6th, 8th and 12th - stand together in the 12th.
This is the textbook form of the Uttara Kalamrita verse: the three dusthana lords "connected" by conjunction in a dusthana, with nothing else in the house. The engine reports Sarala Yoga for the Sun, Harsha for Mercury and Vimala for Jupiter. BPHS's side is unusually mild here too: the 8th lord is the Sun, and Ch. 34 says the Sun's 8th lordship "is not evil"; Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call the Sun neutral for Makar Lagn. Sl. 96 still applies by its wording; the lord here is itself a natural malefic, a case its "malefic in the 12th" clause does not clearly address. See also Sun in the 12th house.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 12th house in 231, or 7.7%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 12th lord in the 8th (Sl. 140), is favourable in BPHS and is also a Vipareeta condition; together the two would be an exchange of dusthana lords (parivartana), which the Uttara Kalamrita verse lists. The other Sarala placements are the 8th lord in the 6th and in the 8th. One house back, the 8th lord in the 11th (Sl. 95) splits on company; one house on, the cycle returns to the 8th lord in the 1st.

Questions about the 8th lord in the 12th
- What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 12th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 96: spending on wrongdoing and a shortened span, more so with a malefic in the 12th. It is the text's statement about a combination; this app does not compute lifespans or make such predictions.
- Is it Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
- The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 8th lord in the 12th as its first condition, provided the dusthana lords are free of relation with other planets. This app flags Sarala Yoga without testing that condition.
- Why do the sources disagree?
- They are different books that do not refer to each other. BPHS reads the placement through the 12th's loss; the Vipareeta tradition reads a dusthana lord confined to a dusthana as favourable.
- Is the Sun or Moon as 8th lord different?
- BPHS Ch. 34 says the luminaries' 8th lordship "is not evil". That applies for Capricorn (the Sun) and Sagittarius (the Moon) rising.
- How common is it?
- 231 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.7%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
- Is the reverse placement better?
- In BPHS, yes: Sl. 140, the 12th lord in the 8th, reads constant gain, affable speech and good qualities. It is also a Vipareeta condition (Vimala Yoga in the engine).
