In short
The 8th lord in the 11th house carries the ruler of obstruction and longevity into the house of gains. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 95 gives two readings depending on company: with a malefic, a lack of wealth and a hard childhood followed by happiness later; with a benefic, a long life. The planet's other lordship and strength qualify either branch.
What the placement means
The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 11th sign, it carries the 8th's themes - obstruction, longevity, the unearned - into the house of income, gains, elder siblings, friends and fulfilled hopes.
Counted from the 8th, the 11th is the 4th house, an angle from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered an upachaya, the house of gain. BPHS does not give one reading for this; it gives two, and the choice between them is made by whatever sits with the lord.
The two houses involved
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in Ch. 44.
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is an upachaya: gains, friends, elder siblings and hopes.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 95
Sl. 95 reads: "If Randhr's Lord along with a malefic is in Labh Bhava, the native will be devoid of wealth and will be miserable in boyhood, but happy later on. Should Randhr's Lord be yuti with a benefic and be in Labh Bhava, the native will be long-lived."
The verse has two branches. With a malefic, the 8th's loss reaches the 11th's gains - "devoid of wealth" - and childhood is hard, though the verse ends that branch with "happy later on", which may reflect the 11th as an upachaya, a house that improves with time (this page's reading, not the text's). With a benefic, the verse says nothing about wealth at all and instead names longevity, the 8th's own good signification. Neither branch is a forecast about anyone.
The verse does not cover the case where the 8th lord is alone in the 11th, or where both a malefic and a benefic join it. Those gaps are real; this page leaves them open rather than fill them. The reverse, Sl. 128 (Labh's lord in Randhr), reads reversals in undertakings, long life, and a spouse who predeceases - so both directions mention long life.
Who counts as malefic or benefic
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10: "Guru and Śukr are benefics", the Moon "mediocre in benefice", Mercury "neutral" (benefic with benefics, malefic with malefics), and "Malefics are Sūrya, Śani and Mangal". Sl. 95 uses "along with" for the malefic case and "yuti" (conjunct) for the benefic case, so both branches turn on conjunction in the 11th, not aspect. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the 8th lord's own rule (harmful with the 3rd, 7th or 11th; auspicious with a trine; not evil for the luminaries), and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse here.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 11th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 11th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Aquarius | Neutral | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Pisces | Own sign | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Aries | Debilitated | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Taurus | Friendly sign | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Gemini | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Cancer | Debilitated | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Leo | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Virgo | Exalted, moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Libra | Neutral | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Scorpio | Friendly sign | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Sagittarius | Neutral | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Capricorn | Friendly sign | 3rd |
For Taurus and Scorpio rising, one planet owns both the 8th and 11th (Jupiter, Mercury), and the placement is that planet in its own 11th-house sign; for Scorpio the engine reads Mercury in Virgo as exalted, moolatrikona or own sign by degree. Ch. 34 calls that 8th-plus-11th ownership "specifically harmful". Two rows are debilitated: Gemini rising (Saturn, lord of the 8th and 9th, in Aries) and Virgo rising (Mars, lord of the 3rd and 8th, in Cancer). Leo and Libra rising are enemy signs.
The second lordship's Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Labh is mostly favourable. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 11: constant gains, good qualities, fame - contrary to Sl. 95's malefic branch on wealth, so they cancel there. As 11th lord at home (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 131: gain in every undertaking. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 107: gains day by day. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 59: learned, an author, many children and wealth. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 35: gain in trade. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse.
Strength changes the reading
- Company first: Sl. 95's branch is chosen by a malefic or a benefic conjunct the lord in the 11th.
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share of whichever branch applies.
- Aspects: the 11th is aspected from the 5th, and specially by Mars (8th, 4th), Jupiter (7th, 3rd) and Saturn (9th, 2nd) - see drishti. Sl. 95 names conjunction, so aspects modify the reading only through the general rules.
The 8th lord's own nature is a separate matter from its company: it is a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun); a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus); Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius; the Moon for Sagittarius. Sl. 95 asks about the companion, not the lord. Planet-level pages such as Venus in the 11th describe the planet in the house without lordship.
The nodes raise a question the verse does not answer. This app's engine treats Rahu and Ketu as malefics, and Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says they "give predominantly the effects" of the lord they join or the house they occupy. Whether a node conjunct the 8th lord in the 11th triggers Sl. 95's malefic branch is therefore uncertain: by the engine's classification yes, by Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10's list (which names only the Sun, Saturn and Mars, and a weak Moon) not explicitly. This page records the ambiguity rather than resolving it.
Worked example: Libra rising, Venus with Mars in Leo
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 22 September 1985, 09:53 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Libra 23.23.
- With Libra rising, Venus rules the 1st (Libra) and the 8th (Taurus). The 11th is Leo.
- Venus is in Leo at 6.43 degrees, Magha pada 2, in the 11th. The engine marks it Neutral.
- Mars (Leo 14.03, ruler of the 2nd and 7th) is with it. Mars is a natural malefic by Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10.
- Saturn, from Scorpio in the 2nd, aspects the 11th. The 11th lord, the Sun, is in Virgo in the 12th.
Sl. 95's malefic branch applies here on its wording: Mars is "along with" the 8th lord in Labh. Its adverse clause on wealth meets Sl. 11, the Lagna lord in Labh (constant gains, fame), which contradicts it, so by Sl. 145-148 the two cancel on wealth; "miserable in boyhood, but happy later" remains. Ch. 34 counts Venus's 1st-plus-8th ownership as the auspicious kind and calls Venus "neutral" for Tula Lagn; it names Mars "a killer" for this Ascendant. The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes Mars, Venus and Saturn, and Vimala Yoga for Mercury. See also Mars in the 11th.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 11th house in 235, or 7.8%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 11th lord in the 8th (Sl. 128), is summarised above; together the lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 8th lord in the 10th (Sl. 94) also turns on a benefic; one house on, the 8th lord in the 12th (Sl. 96) is Sarala Yoga. The 8th lord in the 2nd is the other wealth-house placement.

Questions about the 8th lord in the 11th
- What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 11th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 95: with a malefic, a lack of wealth and a hard childhood, then happiness later; with a benefic, a long life. Scaled by strength; not a forecast.
- What if the 8th lord is alone in the 11th?
- Sl. 95 does not say. Its two branches both need a companion. The second lordship's verse and the general strength rule still apply.
- Does "long-lived" mean this app predicts a long life?
- No. It is the verse's wording for one branch. This app does not compute or present lifespans.
- Which Ascendants make one planet lord of the 8th and 11th?
- Taurus (Jupiter) and Scorpio (Mercury). The placement is then that planet in its own 11th-house sign; Ch. 34 calls the double ownership specifically harmful.
- How common is it?
- 235 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.8%.
