In short
The 8th lord in the 2nd house moves the ruler of longevity and obstruction into the house of family, speech and wealth, directly opposite its own sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 86 reads it as reduced vigour, modest wealth and difficulty recovering what is lost. Whether the planet also owns a trine, or the 3rd, 7th or 11th, changes the reading considerably.
What the placement means
The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 2nd sign, it carries the 8th's themes - obstruction, sudden loss, inheritance, longevity - into the house of family, speech, food and stored wealth.
Counted from the 8th, the 2nd is the 7th: the lord stands opposite its own sign and casts its 7th aspect back onto it. The 2nd-8th axis is the axis of one's own resources against what comes through others, inheritance and the unearned, and this placement puts the 8th's lord on the near side of it.
The two houses involved
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) covers family, speech, food and wealth, and is the stronger maraka house in Ch. 44 - a longevity-timing classification this app does not use for predictions.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 86
Sl. 86 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Dhan Bhava, the native will be devoid of bodily vigour, will enjoy a little wealth and will not regain lost wealth." Every clause is restrictive, though none is extreme.
The wealth clauses are the plainest application of house logic in the Randhr series: the 8th's loss arrives in the 2nd's wealth, and what is lost stays lost. The vigour clause is a classical bodily association, reported as the text's and not as medical advice. "A little wealth" is a limitation rather than a denial. None of it is a forecast about anyone's finances.
The reverse reads almost the opposite way. Sl. 20, Dhan's lord in Randhr, gives "abundant land and wealth", with limited marital felicity and little happiness from an elder brother. When the lord of wealth enters the house of inheritance, BPHS sees property; when the lord of the 8th enters the house of wealth, it sees little. It is one of the clearest asymmetries in Ch. 24.
The 8th-lord rule
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the 8th lord "is not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava", that it is "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, that it "will bestow auspicious effects" if it also owns a trine, and that the Sun's and Moon's 8th lordship "is not evil". Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale Sl. 86 by strength and combine it with the second lordship's verse. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 2nd sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 2nd house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Taurus | Neutral | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Gemini | Enemy sign | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Leo | Enemy sign | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Virgo | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Libra | Neutral | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Scorpio | Neutral | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Sagittarius | Neutral | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Capricorn | Neutral | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Aquarius | Enemy sign | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Pisces | Debilitated | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Aries | Neutral | 3rd |
The dignity column is weak across the board. No row is friendly, own sign or exalted by sign alone; six are neutral, five enemy, and Aquarius rising puts Mercury, lord of the 5th and 8th, debilitated in Pisces. By Ch. 34's rule, the "auspicious" rows (an 8th lord that also owns a trine) are Aries and Libra (the Lagna), Gemini (the 9th), and Leo and Aquarius (the 5th); the "specifically harmful" ones are Taurus and Scorpio (11th), Cancer (7th), Virgo and Pisces (3rd); and Sagittarius and Capricorn (the Moon, the Sun) are "not evil".
Each second lordship brings its own Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Dhan. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 2: gainful, scholarly, happy, religious, honoured. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 50: many children and wealth, head of a household, famous. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 98: scholarly, wealthy, happy with spouse and children. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 122: all kinds of wealth and accomplishments. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 74: wealth through the spouse. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 26: little effort and little happiness. Most of these contradict Sl. 86 on wealth, and Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share; on sign alone this placement is rarely strong.
- The second lordship, classified by Ch. 34 and read through its own verse.
- Association: the 2nd is aspected from the 8th, and specially by Mars (11th, 7th), Jupiter (10th, 6th) and Saturn (12th, 5th) - see drishti.
Because the lord sits opposite its own house, every 8th lord in the 2nd aspects the 8th. BPHS Ch. 24 does not comment on that geometry. The planet-level pages - Mercury in the 2nd, Jupiter in the 2nd, Saturn in the 2nd - describe the common 8th lords in the house of speech without lordship.
Ch. 44 adds one more classification that a careful reader will meet. It names the lords of the 2nd and 7th as marakas and, in Sl. 6-7, says the period of the 8th lord can also bring the end of life within an already-estimated span. An 8th lord in the stronger maraka house therefore sits at the centre of that longevity scheme. This page reports the classification because it is in the text; this app does not compute or display longevity timings, and Ch. 24 Sl. 86 itself is about vigour and wealth, not lifespan.
Worked example: Aquarius rising, Mercury in Pisces
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Aquarius 21.28.
- With Aquarius rising, the 8th house is Virgo and the 5th is Gemini; Mercury rules both. The 2nd is Pisces.
- Mercury is in Pisces at 24.97 degrees, Revati pada 3, in the 2nd. The engine marks it Debilitated; it is not combust in this chart.
- The Sun (Pisces 9.65, ruler of the 7th) and Venus (Pisces 26.51, ruler of the 4th and 9th, Exalted and retrograde) share the 2nd.
- The 2nd lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 12th, Debilitated.
This is an "auspicious" row by Ch. 34: Mercury owns the 8th and the 5th, a trine. Its 5th-lord verse for the 2nd, Sl. 50, is one of the brightest in the chapter (many children, wealth, fame) and contradicts Sl. 86 on wealth, so the two cancel there by Sl. 145-148. Mercury itself is debilitated, the "quarter" end of the scale. Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 say Mercury gives "meddling effects" for Kumbh Lagn and name Venus as the one planet that causes Raj Yog. The engine's yoga detector reports the 5th-9th Raja Yoga for Mercury and Venus together in the 2nd, and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes the Sun as well - flags that come from Mercury's 5th lordship and its company, not from the 8th lordship.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 2nd house in 255, or 8.5%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 8th (Sl. 20), is summarised above; together they would be an exchange (parivartana) across the 2nd-8th axis. One house back, the 8th lord in the 1st (Sl. 85) concerns the body; one house on, the 8th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 87) concerns siblings and strength. The 8th lord in the 11th is the other wealth-house placement.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Check the birth chart for the 8th lord in the 2nd sign, with its dignity.
- Classify its other house by Ch. 34 and read that lordship's verse for the 2nd beside Sl. 86.
Questions about the 8th lord in the 2nd
- What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 2nd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 86: little bodily vigour, a little wealth, and lost wealth not regained. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength; not a financial forecast.
- Is the reverse placement better?
- BPHS reads it so: Sl. 20, the 2nd lord in the 8th, gives abundant land and wealth. Ch. 24 is not symmetrical.
- Can the second lordship offset Sl. 86?
- Yes, by Sl. 145-148: most second-lordship verses for the 2nd (the Lagna, 5th, 9th, 11th and 7th lords) are favourable about wealth and cancel Sl. 86's contrary clause.
- Is it a maraka combination?
- The 2nd is the stronger maraka house in BPHS Ch. 44, a longevity-timing classification this app does not use for predictions. Sl. 86 itself does not speak of longevity.
- How common is it?
- 255 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.5%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people, and sits close to the one-in-twelve a single house would suggest.
