House lords

The lord of the 11th house placed in the 8th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 128 on reversals and long life, the Vipareeta yogas it forms for five Ascendants, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Virgo chart.

In short

The 11th lord in the 8th house is the ruler of gains placed in the house of longevity, obstacles and the hidden. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 128 reads it as reversals in undertakings and a long life, with a clause about the spouse that this app reports only as the text's wording. For five Ascendants the 11th lord also owns a dusthana, and the engine then reports a Vipareeta yoga.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 8th house" is the lord of gains, income and elder siblings standing in the house of longevity, sudden events, inheritance and the hidden.

The 8th is a dusthana. Counted from the 11th it is the 10th, an angle relative to the house of gains. BPHS Ch. 44 names the 3rd and 8th as the houses of longevity. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) governs longevity, obstacles and hidden or unearned matters.

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 8th

Ch. 24 Sl. 128: if the lord of Labh is in the Randhr Bhava, the native "will incur reversals in his undertakings and will live long", while the spouse will predecease him. The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse joins the 11th house's undertakings to the 8th house's reversals, and the 8th's own signification, long life, appears as it does in the 10th lord's verse for the same house (Sl. 116). The clause about the spouse is the text's wording; this app does not compute lifespans and does not read it as a forecast about anyone.

Sl. 145-148 then qualify every clause: full, half or a quarter by strength, and both lordships read for a planet owning two houses, contrary results cancelling.

Vipareeta yogas through the second lordship

The second-lordship column below is unusual: for five Ascendants the 11th lord also owns a dusthana, and in the 8th it then meets the engine's Vipareeta rule. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it owns the 8th as well, so it is the 8th lord in its own house and the engine reports Sarala Yoga. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising it owns the 6th, and the engine reports Harsha Yoga. For Pisces rising Saturn owns the 11th and 12th, and the engine reports Vimala Yoga. The engine's source for those yogas is Advanced Predictive Astrology, not BPHS; BPHS's own reading for the 8th lord in the 8th (Sl. 92) is long life, with a weak planet giving medium longevity.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 explain the 8th lord's inauspiciousness as owning the 12th from the 9th, and list the 11th lord among the evil lordships. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 11th lord in the 8th.

The 11th lord and the 8th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

The table spans the scale. Two rows are exalted: Gemini rising (Mars in Capricorn) and Pisces rising (Saturn in Libra), and both are Vipareeta rows. Taurus and Scorpio rising are own-sign rows (Jupiter in Sagittarius, Mercury in Gemini), the Sarala cases. Leo rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces, and Mercury there owns the 2nd and 11th, both wealth houses. Four rows are enemy signs: Saturn in Scorpio (Aries), the Sun in Taurus (Libra), Venus in Cancer (Sagittarius, a Harsha row) and Jupiter in Virgo (Aquarius).

The non-Vipareeta rows

Seven Ascendants do not produce a Vipareeta yoga through this placement. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 11th lord owns the 4th, an angle, and stands in Aquarius (Venus, friendly) or Leo (Mars, friendly). For Leo and Aquarius rising it owns the 2nd: Mercury debilitated in Pisces, and Jupiter in Virgo, an enemy sign; both wealth lordships are then weak in the 8th. For Aries rising Saturn owns the 10th and stands in Scorpio, an enemy sign. For Virgo and Libra rising the lord is a luminary: the Moon in Aries (neutral by nature) and the Sun in Taurus (enemy). In these rows nothing in the engine's yoga list offsets Sl. 128, and BPHS's own offsets are the ones Sl. 145-148 name: strength and the other lordship.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 128 is unfavourable, a strong 11th lord gives it more fully under Sl. 145-148, and what can offset it is the second lordship and company. Here the strong rows are also the Vipareeta rows, so the engine's yoga and the BPHS verse point different ways in exactly the charts where the planet is strongest. A reader keeps both: the verse as BPHS states it, the yoga as the engine's separately sourced rule. Dignity and combustion set how fully either applies.

From the 8th, every graha aspects the 2nd. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 11th and the 3rd, so for Gemini and Capricorn rising a Mars in the 8th looks back at its own 11th; a Jupiter the 12th and the 4th; a Saturn the 10th and the 5th.

Counted from the 11th, the 8th is the 10th, an angle. That derived count is often cited to argue the placement is better than the verse; BPHS does not make that argument in Sl. 128, and this page does not either.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 8th lord in the 11th (Sl. 95), depends on company: with a malefic, lack of wealth and a hard boyhood followed by happiness; with a benefic, long life. Both together are a parivartana between a dusthana and an upachaya. The 11th lord in the 7th (Sl. 127) gives gains through the spouse's family and the 11th lord in the 9th (Sl. 129) fortune and affluence.

Worked example: Virgo rising, the Moon in Aries

The engine's deterministic search found: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Virgo 28.04. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Virgo rising the 11th house is Cancer, so the 11th lord is the Moon, which owns no other sign.
  • The 8th house is Aries. The Moon is there at 6.22 degrees, Ashwini pada 2, "Friendly sign"; Rahu shares Aries at 28.61.
  • The Lagna lord Mercury and the Sun (the 12th lord) are in Aquarius, the 6th; the engine reports Vimala Yoga for the Sun.
  • Venus is exalted in Pisces in the 7th; the engine reports Malavya Yoga.

This is the luminary row: the Moon rules only the 11th, so Sl. 128 is scaled by dignity alone, and no Vipareeta yoga can come from it (the Moon owns no dusthana for Virgo rising). A friendly-sign Moon is a middle case on Sl. 145-148's scale. The 8th is the 12th from the 9th, which is Ch. 34's reason for calling the 8th lord inauspicious; here it is the 11th lord, not the 8th lord, that occupies the house, and the 8th lord (Mars) is in Pisces in the 7th, with an exalted Venus.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 8th house in 240, or 8.0%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 11th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the eighth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its second lordship: a dusthana for five Ascendants.
  4. Run the yoga calculator to see whether a Vipareeta yoga is reported.

Questions about the 11th lord in the 8th

What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in the 8th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 128: reversals in undertakings and long life, with a clause about the spouse dying first. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength. This app reports it as the text's claim and does not forecast lifespans.
When does it form a Vipareeta yoga?
When the 11th lord also owns the 6th, 8th or 12th: Taurus and Scorpio rising (Sarala), Gemini and Sagittarius (Harsha), Pisces (Vimala).
Does it mean financial losses?
The verse speaks of reversals in undertakings as a classical tendency. This app does not forecast finances from a placement.
Which Ascendants give the strongest 11th lord here?
By sign: Gemini (Mars exalted) and Pisces (Saturn exalted), then Taurus and Scorpio (own sign). Leo rising puts Mercury debilitated.
What does the reverse placement say?
The 8th lord in the 11th (Sl. 95) depends on company: with a malefic, poverty and a hard boyhood followed by happiness; with a benefic, long life.
Is the 11th lord in the 8th always unfavourable?
BPHS Sl. 128 is an unfavourable verse, and Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength and by the planet\'s other lordship. For five Ascendants the engine also reports a Vipareeta yoga, a separately sourced rule that reads the double dusthana link differently.
How common is it?
It occurred in 240 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.0%.
