In short
The 11th lord in the 7th house is the ruler of gains placed in the angle of marriage and partnership. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 127 reads it as always gaining through the spouse's relatives, liberal, virtuous and sensuous, and at the spouse's command. By sign it is a strong table: two rows are exalted and seven are friendly signs.
What the placement means
"The 11th lord in the 7th house" is the lord of gains, income, friends and elder siblings standing in the house of the spouse, partners and dealings with others. The house of returns carries its affairs into the angle of relationship.
The 7th is a Kendra. Counted from the 11th, it is the 9th, the fortune house relative to gains. From the 7th every graha aspects the Lagna. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) governs marriage, partners and others; Ch. 34 calls the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness".
What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 7th
Ch. 24 Sl. 127: if the lord of Labh is in the Yuvati Bhava, the native "will always gain through his wife's relatives", will be liberal, virtuous and sensuous, and "will remain at the command of his spouse". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse, like the chapter, addresses a male native; in neutral terms it describes gains through the spouse's family and a person who defers to the spouse. It is the 11th house's gains routed through the 7th house's people.
The deference clause is worth setting beside Sl. 82 (the 7th lord in the 10th), which describes a spouse who does not defer. BPHS reads the balance of a marriage from which lord goes where. Sl. 145-148 scale the verse: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.
An "evil" lord in an angle of happiness
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 class the 11th lord as the most marked of the evil lordships and the 7th as one of the two Kendras "specially for happiness". The 11th lord in the 7th puts the two together. The same passage says that benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects and malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious; that rule applies here only where the 11th lord also owns an angle, which is the 4th for Cancer and Capricorn rising and the 10th for Aries rising. For the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 sends the reader to the Navamsa, so the 11th lord's sign in the D9 is the usual cross-check. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse here.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).
| Ascendant | 11th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Libra | Exalted | 10th |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Scorpio | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Gemini | Mars | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Cancer | Venus | Capricorn | Friendly sign | 4th |
| Leo | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 2nd |
| Virgo | Moon | Pisces | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Libra | Sun | Aries | Exalted | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Taurus | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Gemini | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Capricorn | Mars | Cancer | Debilitated | 4th |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Pisces | Saturn | Virgo | Friendly sign | 12th |
Two rows are exalted: Aries rising (Saturn in Libra; Saturn owns the 10th and 11th) and Libra rising (the Sun in Aries). Capricorn rising puts Mars debilitated in Cancer (Mars owns the 4th and 11th). Seven rows are friendly signs and none is an enemy sign, making this one of the 11th lord's best-supported placements by sign.
A Panchamahapurusha case and the luminary row
Aries rising is a Panchamahapurusha case in this app's sense: Saturn exalted in a Kendra forms Sasa Yoga, which the engine reports whenever this placement occurs for that Ascendant. The yoga comes from sign and house, not from the 11th lordship. Libra rising is the luminary case: the Sun, exalted in Aries, owns no other house, so Sl. 127 is scaled by dignity alone with no second lordship to vary it, and the Panchamahapurusha rule does not include the Sun.
The weak row and the dusthana rows
Capricorn rising is the one debilitated row: Mars owns the 4th and the 11th and falls in Cancer, the 7th. A planet carrying an angle and the house of gains is then at its weakest in the angle of marriage, and Sl. 145-148 would give a quarter of Sl. 127. It also aspects the Lagna from there, as every 7th-house planet does, with its own 4th and 8th aspects falling on the 10th and the 2nd.
Five rows bring a dusthana lordship into the 7th. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 11th lord owns the 8th (Jupiter in Scorpio, Mercury in Taurus, both friendly signs); for Gemini and Sagittarius rising, the 6th (Mars in Sagittarius, Venus in Gemini, both friendly); for Pisces rising, the 12th (Saturn in Virgo, friendly). In all five the sign is good and the second lordship difficult, the "varied results" case of Sl. 145-148 in which both come to pass.
Strength changes the reading
After dignity, the second lordship decides. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it is the 8th, for Gemini and Sagittarius the 6th, for Pisces the 12th; for Leo and Aquarius it is the 2nd, a wealth house, which agrees with the verse's gains. Combustion and company come next.
From the 7th, every graha aspects the 1st. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 10th and the 2nd; a Jupiter the 11th and the 3rd, so a Jupiter 11th lord in the 7th looks back at its own house; a Saturn the 9th and the 4th.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 11th (Sl. 83), reads as gaining wealth through the spouse, with less happiness from sons and the birth of daughters. Both verses route gains through marriage, from opposite directions. Together they are a parivartana between the angle of marriage and the house of gains. The 11th lord in the 6th (Sl. 126) is harsh and the 11th lord in the 8th (Sl. 128) speaks of reversals; the 7th is the favourable placement between them.
Worked example: Leo rising, Mercury in Aquarius
The engine's deterministic search found: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Leo rising the 11th house is Gemini and the 11th lord is Mercury, which also owns Virgo, the 2nd.
- The 7th house is Aquarius. Mercury is there at 0.22 degrees, Dhanishta pada 3, "Friendly sign", and combust.
- The Sun, the Lagna lord, shares Aquarius at 3.18, "Neutral".
- Mars (the 4th and 9th lord) and Venus (exalted; the 3rd and 10th lord) are together in Pisces, the 8th; the engine reports a Kendra-Kona link for them.
Here both wealth lordships (the 2nd and 11th) sit in the 7th in one planet, beside the Lagna lord, and both aspect the Lagna from there. That fits the gains clause of Sl. 127 well; the combustion, with the Sun only about three degrees away, is the weakening factor on Sl. 145-148's scale. Mercury at 0.22 degrees is also at the very start of Aquarius; the house it occupies depends on the Ascendant, which is why the placement needs an accurate birth time even when the planet's sign is not in doubt.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 7th house in 234, or 7.8%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Questions about the 11th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 127: gains through the spouse's relatives; liberal, virtuous and sensuous; at the spouse's command. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength.
- Does it mean marrying into money?
- The verse speaks of gains through the spouse's family as a classical tendency. This app does not forecast marriage or money from a placement.
- Does it form Sasa Yoga?
- For Aries rising, yes, in this app: Saturn exalted in Libra, a Kendra. The yoga comes from Saturn's sign and house, not from the 11th lordship.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- By sign: Aries (Saturn exalted) and Libra (the Sun exalted). Capricorn rising puts Mars debilitated in Cancer.
- What does the reverse placement say?
- The 7th lord in the 11th (Sl. 83): gains through the spouse, with less happiness from sons and the birth of daughters.
- Does the 11th lord in the 7th aspect the Ascendant?
- Yes. The 1st is the 7th house from the 7th, and every graha aspects its 7th. A Jupiter 11th lord in the 7th also aspects its own 11th.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 234 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.8%.
