In short

The 7th lord in the 11th house carries the ruler of marriage and partnership into the house of gains, friends and elder siblings. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 83 reads it as wealth through the spouse, with less happiness from sons and the birth of daughters. The text scales that by strength and combines it with the planet's other lordship, which varies a great deal by Ascendant.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord rules the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 11th sign, it carries the 7th's matters - the spouse, partners, trade, agreements - into the house of income, gains, elder siblings, friends and the fulfilment of wishes.

Counted from the 7th, the 11th is the 5th house: a trine from the lord's own sign, and also the house of children reckoned from the spouse's house. That second count may be why Sl. 83 speaks of offspring. Counted from the Ascendant, an angle lord has moved into an upachaya, the house of gain.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra - marriage, partnerships, the public - and a maraka house in Ch. 44.

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is an upachaya: gains, friends, elder siblings and hopes. Ch. 34 groups its owner with those that give evil effects by lordship.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 83

Sl. 83 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Labh Bhava, the native will gain wealth through his wife, be endowed with less happiness from sons etc. and will have daughters." One clause is favourable, one restrictive, one neutral.

"Wealth through his wife" repeats Sl. 74 (the 7th lord in the 2nd) word for word: the lord of the spouse reaching either wealth-house, the 2nd or the 11th, brings gain through the partner. The clauses about children may follow from the 11th being the 5th from the 7th, but that is this page's reading of the count, not the text's stated reason. "Will have daughters" reflects the text's own era and framing. None of it is a prediction; this app does not forecast children or marriages.

The reverse, Sl. 127 (Labh's lord in Yuvati), keeps the gain theme: the native "will always gain through his wife's relatives", is liberal, virtuous and sensuous, and "will remain at the command of his spouse". Between the two directions, BPHS links the 7th and 11th consistently through gain connected with the partner.

Lordship and strength

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 give the Kendra-lord rule (benefics owning angles lose benefic force, malefics lose malefic force) and say owners of the 11th give evil effects - a statement about owning the 11th, which the 7th lord does not acquire by sitting there. Ch. 44 makes the 7th lord a maraka, a longevity-timing classification this app does not use for predictions. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale the verse by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras have no verse for this placement.

Eight rows are friendly by sign. Virgo rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 4th and 7th, exalted in Cancer. Two rows are debilitated: Scorpio rising (Venus, lord of the 7th and 12th, in Virgo) and Capricorn rising (the Moon in Scorpio).

The second-lordship verses for a lord in Labh mostly support Sl. 83's gain clause. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 23: all kinds of wealth, diligence, honour and fame. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 119: wealth, happiness and sons, virtue and truthfulness - which contradicts Sl. 83's "less happiness from sons", so by Sl. 145-148 the two cancel on children. As 4th lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 47: liberal, virtuous, charitable, with a fear of hidden illness. As 12th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 143: losses, being raised by others, occasional gain through others. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 95: conditional on malefic or benefic company. As 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 71: gain through enemies.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the share of Sl. 83.
  • Nature: under Ch. 34, owning the 7th weakens a benefic's benefic force (Venus most of all, per Sl. 8-10) and softens a malefic's malefic force.
  • Association: the 11th is aspected from the 5th, and specially by Mars (8th, 4th), Jupiter (7th, 3rd) and Saturn (9th, 2nd) - see drishti.

The house helps the lord's comfort here more often than not, since most rows are friendly. A reader also usually checks the 7th lord's sign in the Navamsa, which BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to the spouse. Planet-level pages such as Mars in the 11th and Jupiter in the 11th describe the planet in the house without lordship.

Two geometric facts are worth adding, because they bear on the verse's subject without being part of it. First, from the 11th every planet casts its 7th aspect onto the 5th, the house of children, so a 7th lord in the 11th is always looking at the 5th. Second, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have extra aspects from the 11th: Mars onto the 2nd and 6th, Jupiter onto the 3rd and 7th - its own house, when Jupiter is the 7th lord for Gemini and Virgo rising - and Saturn onto the 1st and 8th. BPHS Ch. 24 does not comment on either fact; they are stated here so that a reader checking a chart knows which houses the lord touches.

Natural character is the last layer. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, the 7th lord is a benefic for six Ascendants (Venus for Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter for Gemini and Virgo, Mercury for Sagittarius and Pisces), a malefic for five (Mars for Taurus and Libra, Saturn for Cancer and Leo, the Sun for Aquarius) and the Moon for Capricorn. Sl. 83 has the same wording for all of them.

Worked example: Taurus rising, Mars in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 28 January 1985, 13:51 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Taurus 20.77.

  • With Taurus rising, the 7th house is Scorpio and the 12th is Aries; Mars rules both. The 11th is Pisces.
  • Mars is in Pisces at 2.3 degrees, Purva Bhadrapada pada 4, in the 11th. The engine marks it Friendly sign.
  • Venus, the Lagna lord (and 6th lord), is beside it at Pisces 1.62, Exalted.
  • The 11th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 9th, Debilitated and combust.

Mars carries Sl. 83 as 7th lord and Sl. 143 as 12th lord in Labh (losses, and gain only sometimes through others). The two disagree on gain, so by Sl. 145-148 they cancel there; Sl. 83's clauses about children stand. Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 say Mars, with the Jupiter group, "will inflict death" for Vrishabh Lagn - the maraka sense. The striking feature is the company: the Lagna lord is exalted in the same sign, and the engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga whose members include Mars and Venus, along with Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga for Saturn (owner of the 9th and 10th).

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 11th house in 218, or 7.3%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 11th lord in the 7th (Sl. 127), is summarised above; together they would be an exchange (parivartana). One house back, the 7th lord in the 10th (Sl. 82) gives wealth and religion with an independent spouse; one house on, the 7th lord in the 12th (Sl. 84) speaks of penury. The 7th lord in the 2nd shares the "wealth through his wife" clause.

  3. Read the second lordship's verse for the 11th beside Sl. 83, and note the 7th lord's dignity and Navamsa sign.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 11th

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 11th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse, less happiness from sons, and daughters. Scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148); not a prediction.
Does it mean gain through marriage?
The verse names wealth through the spouse, as Sl. 74 does for the 2nd. It is the text's statement about a combination, combined with the planet's other lordship.
Why does it mention children?
BPHS does not say. The 11th is the 5th - the house of children - counted from the 7th; that is a structural observation, not the text's explanation.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest lord here?
Virgo: Jupiter exalted in Cancer. Scorpio (Venus) and Capricorn (the Moon) give the lord debilitated.
Can the second lordship change the verse about children?
Yes, by BPHS's own rule. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising, the 10th-lord verse for the 11th (Sl. 119) names happiness from sons, which contradicts Sl. 83; Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel.
How common is it?
218 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.3%. That counts moments, not people.
