House lords

The lord of the 7th house placed in the 12th: the BPHS verse on expense and livelihood, the rows where the 7th lord also owns a dusthana, the planet for each Ascendant and a worked chart with an exalted but combust Venus.

In short

The 7th lord in the 12th house carries the ruler of marriage and partnership into the house of loss, expense and distant places. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 84 reads it as want and thrift, a livelihood connected with clothing, and a spouse who spends freely. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength, and for several Ascendants the planet's other lordship changes it.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord rules the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 12th sign, it takes the 7th's matters - the spouse, partners, trade - into the house of expenditure, loss, foreign residence, sleep, seclusion and release.

Counted from the 7th, the 12th is the 6th house, a dusthana reckoned from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant it is a dusthana too. The verse that results is concrete in an unusual way: it names a trade.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra - marriage, partnership, trade - and a maraka house in Ch. 44.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is a dusthana: loss, expense, foreign lands, confinement, liberation. Ch. 34 says its lord's results depend on association.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 84

Sl. 84 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Vyaya Bhava, the native will incur penury, be a miser and his livelihood will be related to clothes. His wife will be a spendthrift." Two clauses describe the native's finances, one his trade, one the spouse.

The 12th's meaning, loss and expense, runs through the verse: want for the native, spending by the spouse. The trade in clothes is one of a handful of occupational specifics in Ch. 24 (Sl. 69, for the 6th lord in the 9th, names wood and stone); BPHS gives no reason for it, and this page reports the wording without converting it into a modern career category. The spouse clause is written in the text's era and terms. None of it is a forecast, and this app does not predict finances or marriages.

The reverse is on the same theme and harsher on the marriage itself. Sl. 139, Vyaya's lord in Yuvati, says the native "will incur expenditure on account of his wife", will not enjoy conjugal bliss and will lack learning and strength. Whichever lord moves, BPHS reads the 7th-12th link as expense through the partner.

Second lordships that change the reading

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 combine both lordships of a two-house planet and scale by strength. For five Ascendants the 7th lord also rules a dusthana, and then the placement is a dusthana lord in a dusthana. The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 6th and 8th lords in the 12th as Vipareeta Raja Yoga conditions, and the commentator extends it by analogy to the 12th lord in the 12th. This app's engine flags all three: Harsha Yoga for Leo rising (Saturn, the 6th lord), Sarala Yoga for Cancer rising (Saturn, the 8th lord), and Vimala Yoga for Taurus and Scorpio rising (Mars or Venus, the 12th lord at home). Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the Kendra-lord rule. The Saravali has no verse here.

The 7th lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Aries rising puts Venus, lord of the 2nd and 7th, exalted in Pisces. Taurus and Scorpio rising keep the lord in its own 12th-house sign (Mars in Aries, Venus in Libra). Four rows are enemy signs: Gemini, Leo, Libra and Aquarius rising. No row is debilitated.

The second-lordship verses for a lord in Vyaya are mostly sombre. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 24: adventurous, without wealth, interested in others' wealth - agreeing with Sl. 84 on money. As 12th lord at home (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 144: heavy expenditure, irritability. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 120: spending through royal circles, fear of enemies, worry despite skill. As 4th lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 48: lacking domestic comforts. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 96, and 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 72, both harsh. In the Vipareeta rows, these verses sit beside a yoga that points the other way.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label. Read literally, a stronger lord gives more of Sl. 84.
  • Nature: under Ch. 34, owning the 7th weakens a benefic's benefic force (Venus most) and softens a malefic's malefic force.
  • Association: the 12th is aspected from the 6th, and specially by Mars (9th, 5th), Jupiter (8th, 4th) and Saturn (10th, 3rd) - see drishti. Combustion is common here because the Sun is often near the 12th.

BPHS reads the spouse from the Navamsa too (Ch. 7). Planet-level pages such as Venus in the 12th and Saturn in the 12th describe the planet in the house without lordship.

Company in the 12th is read in two opposite ways in this corpus. The Vipareeta verse treats dusthana lords meeting one another favourably. The same Bhrigu Sutras commentary, discussing Saturn in the 4th, states the reverse principle for any other planet: a 6th, 8th or 12th lord associated with a planet "will spoil not only the significations of that planet but also the significations of the house where the two planets are posited". A 7th lord in the 12th sits by definition in the 12th lord's sign and may have the 6th or 8th lord beside it - as the worked example below does - so both principles can apply to one chart. The commentary does not reconcile them, and BPHS Ch. 24 states neither; this page notes both.

Worked example: Aries rising, Venus exalted in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 2 April 1985, 08:10 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Aries 26.47.

  • With Aries rising, the 7th house is Libra and the 2nd is Taurus, both ruled by Venus - the lord of both maraka houses. The 12th is Pisces.
  • Venus is in Pisces at 21.58 degrees, Revati pada 2, in the 12th. The engine marks it Exalted, retrograde and combust.
  • The Sun (Pisces 18.66, lord of the 5th) and Mercury (Pisces 21.28, lord of the 3rd and 6th, Debilitated, combust, retrograde) share the 12th.
  • The 12th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 10th, Debilitated.

Venus carries Sl. 84 as 7th lord and Sl. 24 as 2nd lord in Vyaya; both lean against wealth, so they do not cancel. Exaltation would put Venus at the full end of Sl. 145-148's scale, but it is combust beside the Sun. Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 list Venus among the malefics for Mesh Lagn and call it "a direct (independent) killer" - the maraka sense, natural for the lord of both the 2nd and 7th. The engine's yoga detector reports Harsha Yoga for Mercury (the 6th lord in the 12th), a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus and the Sun (an angle lord with a trine lord), and Ruchaka Yoga for Mars in the 1st.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 12th house in 251, or 8.4%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 7th (Sl. 139), is summarised above; together the lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 7th lord in the 11th (Sl. 83) brings gain through the spouse; one house on, the cycle returns to the 7th lord in the 1st (Sl. 73). The other dusthana placements are the 6th and the 8th.

  2. Check the birth chart for the 7th lord in the 12th sign, noting dignity and combustion.
  3. If it also rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yoga calculator.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 12th

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 12th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 84: penury, thrift, a livelihood connected with clothes, and a spendthrift spouse. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength; this app does not predict finances or marriages.
Can it form a Vipareeta yoga?
Through the second lordship: for Leo (6th lord), Cancer (8th lord), Taurus and Scorpio (12th lord) rising, the engine flags Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga.
Does an exalted 7th lord here help?
By Sl. 145-148 a strong lord gives more of its verse, and Sl. 84 is restrictive. Exaltation does not reverse the verse in BPHS; the second lordship and associations modify it.
Should "livelihood related to clothes" be taken literally?
It is the verse's wording, with no reason given. This app does not turn it into a career prediction.
How common is it?
251 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.4%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
