House lords

The lord of the 7th house placed in the 8th: the BPHS verse and its reverse, the rows where a second lordship turns it into a Vipareeta case, the planet for each Ascendant and a heavily aspected worked chart.

In short

The 7th lord in the 8th house takes the ruler of marriage and partnership into the house of longevity, obstruction and hidden matters. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 80 reads it harshly for marriage: reduced marital happiness and a spouse troubled in health and temper. It is the text's claim about a combination, scaled by strength, and several Ascendants add a second lordship that changes it.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord rules the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 8th sign, it takes the 7th's concerns - spouse, partners, contracts - into the house of longevity, sudden events, obstruction, inheritance and the concealed.

Counted from the 7th, the 8th is the 2nd house - the very next sign, and the house of the spouse's resources by that count. Counted from the Ascendant, an angle lord has fallen into the dusthana BPHS regards most cautiously. The verse that results is one of the two harshest in the Yuvati series on marriage, alongside the 6th.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra and, in BPHS Ch. 44, a maraka house: marriage, partnership, trade.

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity: obstruction, sudden change, inheritance, hidden matters.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 80

Sl. 80 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Randhr Bhava, the native will be deprived of marital happiness. His wife will be troubled by diseases, be devoid of good disposition and will not obey the native." Every clause concerns the marriage, and each is adverse.

Briefly, and as the text's statement: reduced marital happiness, and a spouse described as unwell, ill-tempered and independent of the native. The verse is written in its era's terms, for a male native; this app reads it as a classical claim about a combination, not a description of any reader's partner, and the health clause is a classical association, not medical advice.

The reverse reads differently. Sl. 91, Randhr's lord in Yuvati, gives "two wives", and if that lord is joined by a malefic in the 7th, "downfall in his business" - the 7th as the house of trade. Both directions trouble the marriage; only the reverse adds a business clause.

Lordship rules that bear on this placement

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 give the Kendra-lord rule (benefics owning angles lose benefic force, malefics lose malefic force) and a sharper sentence for one row: when the 8th lord also owns the 7th, as Saturn does for Cancer rising, it "will prove specifically harmful". Against that, the Vipareeta rule quoted from Uttara Kalamrita in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 12th lord in the 8th and the 6th lord in the 8th as Vipareeta Raja Yoga conditions. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 7th lord also rules the 12th, and for Leo rising the 6th, so in those rows the 7th lord in the 8th is also one of those yogas (Vimala or Harsha in this app's engine); for Cancer rising it is the 8th lord at home (Sarala). Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 combine the lordships and scale them by strength. The Saravali has no verse here.

The 7th lord and the 8th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Cancer rising keeps Saturn, lord of the 7th and 8th, in its own sign Aquarius. Gemini rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 7th and 10th, debilitated in Capricorn. Sagittarius rising puts Mercury in an enemy sign. Five rows are friendly. No row is exalted.

The second-lordship verses for a lord in Randhr vary sharply. As 12th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 140 is unexpectedly bright: the native "will always gain", speaks affably and has all good qualities. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth, but limited marital felicity - agreeing with Sl. 80 on marriage. As 4th lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 44: lacking domestic comforts. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 116: without work, long-lived, blaming others. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 92: long-lived. As 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 68: adverse. Sl. 145-148 combine whichever applies with Sl. 80.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label. Read literally, a stronger lord gives more of Sl. 80; BPHS does not say strength reverses it.
  • The second lordship, as above - including the Vipareeta rows.
  • Association: the 8th is aspected from the 2nd, and specially by Mars (5th, 1st), Jupiter (4th, 12th) and Saturn (6th, 11th) - see drishti. The Vipareeta condition asks for freedom from relation with other planets.

For a verse about the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 points to the Navamsa as the chart that refines it; the Navamsa calculator gives the planet's sign there.

One passage outside BPHS speaks to a 7th lord in a house like this. Inside the sutras for Mercury in the 7th, the Bhrigu Sutras read a 7th lord that is weak, "situated in a malefic house" or joined by malefics as a loss of the spouse, and a strong 7th lord as a single marriage. That is not a sutra about the 8th specifically, and its harsh clause is the text's claim, reported briefly; but it is the corpus's only other statement that makes the 7th lord's condition in a difficult house decisive. The same text's sutras for the Moon in the 7th read a powerful 7th lord as two marriages, so even the Bhrigu Sutras do not give one consistent rule.

The planet's natural class matters as well. For Capricorn rising the 7th lord is the Moon, which Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 call "mediocre in benefice", stronger when full; for Aquarius rising it is the Sun, a malefic. Neither owns a second sign, so for those two Ascendants Sl. 80 is the whole lordship reading.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, the Moon in Leo

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart, re-enterable in the birth chart calculator: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Capricorn 17.6.

  • With Capricorn rising, the 7th house is Cancer, ruled by the Moon alone. The 8th is Leo.
  • The Moon is in Leo at 5.43 degrees, Magha pada 2, in the 8th. The engine marks it Neutral.
  • Four planets aspect the 8th: Mars and Venus from Aquarius in the 2nd, Jupiter from the 12th and Saturn from the 11th. No planet joins the Moon.
  • The 8th lord, the Sun, is in Sagittarius in the 12th.

The Moon carries Sl. 80 alone, at neutral strength, and Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 count it among the malefics for Makar Lagn. The aspects are mixed in nature: Venus (the 5th-and-10th yogakaraka for Capricorn) and Jupiter are benefics, Mars and Saturn malefics. The Moon and Venus face each other across the 2nd-8th axis, and the engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes them. The same chart shows all three dusthana lords together in the 12th, which the engine reports as Harsha, Sarala and Vimala Yoga - none concerning the Moon. For the planet-level reading, see Moon in the 8th house.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 8th house in 257, or 8.6%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 8th lord in the 7th (Sl. 91), is summarised above; together the lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 7th lord at home (Sl. 79) is the brightest marriage verse; one house on, the 7th lord in the 9th (Sl. 81) is mixed. The other dusthana placements are the 6th and the 12th.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 8th

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 8th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 80: reduced marital happiness, and a spouse described as unwell, ill-disposed and disobedient. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength; this app does not predict marriages.
Can the second lordship soften it?
Yes, in the text's own terms. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 12th-lord verse for the 8th (Sl. 140) is favourable, and the placement is also a Vipareeta condition (Vimala Yoga in the engine).
Which Ascendant is the hardest case?
Cancer: Saturn owns both the 7th and 8th, which BPHS Ch. 34 calls "specifically harmful", though here it sits in its own sign and the engine flags Sarala Yoga.
Does it affect longevity?
Sl. 80 does not speak of longevity. The 7th lord is a maraka in BPHS Ch. 44 for longevity timing, which this app does not use for predictions.
How common is it?
257 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6%.
