In short
The 7th lord in the 7th house is the ruler of marriage and partnership sitting in its own sign, opposite the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 79 reads it favourably: happiness through the spouse, courage, skill and intelligence, with only a classical note about a windy constitution. For ten of the twelve Ascendants it also forms one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas in this app's engine.
What the placement means
A house lord in its own house looks after its own business. The 7th lord in the 7th means the planet ruling the sign opposite the Ascendant is standing in that sign: the house of the spouse, business partners, contracts and dealings with others is held by its own ruler.
It is always in its own sign there, so its dignity is settled; and the house is an angle, so the planet is in a strong position by both measures. The 7th lord in the 7th also aspects the Ascendant by its 7th aspect - the lord of other people looking directly at the self.
The two houses involved
Both are the 7th house (Yuvati Bhava), a kendra read for marriage, partnership, trade and the public, and a maraka house in BPHS Ch. 44.
The second reference point is the 1st house, which the 7th faces across the chart and which the placed lord aspects.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 79
Sl. 79 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native will be endowed with happiness through wife, be courageous, skilful and intelligent, but only afflicted by windy diseases." Four clauses are favourable; the bodily one is introduced with "only".
It is the most favourable Yuvati verse on the subject of marriage itself: the lord at home gives happiness through the spouse. The remaining qualities - courage, skill, intelligence - describe the native. The "windy diseases" clause (vata) is a classical bodily association, reported here and not medical advice; BPHS uses the same phrase in Sl. 73 for the 7th lord in the 1st, so it seems to attach to the 7th lord in more than one position. The verse is addressed to a male native, as the chapter is; in neutral terms it speaks of happiness through the partner. It is not a forecast.
The Bhrigu Sutras on a strong 7th lord
The Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus mention the 7th lord's strength twice, inside sutras about other planets, and the two passages disagree. In the sutras for the Moon in the 7th, "If the lord of the seventh is powerful he will have two wives." In those for Mercury in the 7th, "If the lord of the 7th is strong the native will have only one wife." Neither is a verse about the 7th lord in the 7th, but both bear on it, since that is the 7th lord at its strongest by sign. The page reports the disagreement rather than resolving it.
The Kendra-lord rule and the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning angles "will not give benefic effects" and malefics owning angles "will not remain inauspicious"; Sl. 8-10 add that the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus show this Kendra-lord maleficence in ascending order. So a Venus or Jupiter 7th lord at home carries both a favourable placement and a lordship BPHS treats with reserve. This app's engine adds a separate rule: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in its own sign or exaltation in an angle forms a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga (Pancha Mahapurusha). Because the 7th lord in the 7th is always in its own sign in an angle, every Ascendant except Capricorn (the Moon) and Aquarius (the Sun) forms one: Malavya for Venus, Hamsa for Jupiter, Ruchaka for Mars, Sasa for Saturn and Bhadra for Mercury. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still scale and combine the lordships. The Saravali has no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The lord is always in its own sign, so the dignity column is own sign or better; where degree decides, the engine's moolatrikona or exaltation ranges apply. The last column is the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 7th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 2nd |
| Taurus | Mars | Scorpio | Own sign | 12th |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 10th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Capricorn | Own sign | 8th |
| Leo | Saturn | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 6th |
| Virgo | Jupiter | Pisces | Own sign | 4th |
| Libra | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 2nd |
| Scorpio | Venus | Taurus | Own sign | 12th |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Gemini | Own sign | 10th |
| Capricorn | Moon | Cancer | Own sign | none |
| Aquarius | Sun | Leo | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | none |
| Pisces | Mercury | Virgo | Exalted, moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 4th |
With dignity settled, the second lordship is where the rows differ, and each brings a second Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Yuvati. As 4th lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 43: highly educated, gives up the patrimony, silent in assemblies. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 115: happiness through the spouse, intelligent, virtuous, eloquent, truthful and religious - reinforcing Sl. 79. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 19: drawn to others' spouses, a doctor. As 12th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 139: expenditure on account of the spouse and little conjugal bliss - contrary to Sl. 79 on marriage, so by Sl. 145-148 the two cancel there. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 91: two marriages, and a business downfall if a malefic joins. As 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 67: reduced marital happiness with public goods.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity is fixed at own sign or better, so Sl. 145-148's scale sits near the full end unless combustion or retrograde motion intervenes.
- Nature: Ch. 34's Kendra-lord rule bears hardest on a benefic 7th lord - Venus most, then Jupiter, then Mercury.
- Association: the 7th is aspected from the 1st, and specially by Mars (4th, 12th), Jupiter (3rd, 11th) and Saturn (5th, 10th) - see drishti.
BPHS Ch. 7 assigns the spouse to the Navamsa, so a strong 7th lord in the birth chart is usually checked against its sign there in the Navamsa calculator. Planet-level pages such as Venus in the 7th describe the planet in the house without lordship.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Venus in Taurus
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 20 July 1985, 15:34 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 12.3.
- With Scorpio rising, the 7th house is Taurus and the 12th is Libra, both ruled by Venus.
- Venus is in Taurus at 21.75 degrees, Rohini pada 4, in the 7th. The engine marks it Own sign; it is neither retrograde nor combust.
- No planet shares the 7th. Jupiter, in Capricorn in the 3rd, aspects it by its special 5th-house aspect.
- The engine's yoga detector reports Malavya Yoga for Venus.
Two Ch. 24 verses meet in this Venus. As 7th lord at home it carries Sl. 79 (happiness through the spouse); as 12th lord in Yuvati it carries Sl. 139 (expenditure through the spouse, little conjugal bliss). They contradict each other on marriage, and by Sl. 145-148 they cancel on that point; the native-centred clauses of Sl. 79 remain. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 list Venus among the malefics for Vrischik Lagn. The engine adds Malavya (Venus in its own sign in an angle) and Amala Yoga for Venus (it stands in the 10th sign from the Moon, which is in Leo), plus a Parivarthana Yoga between the Sun and Moon elsewhere in the chart.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 7th house in 246, or 8.2%. That is a count of moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
There is no reverse, since the lord is at home. One house back, the 7th lord in the 6th (Sl. 78) is harsh about the spouse; one house on, the 7th lord in the 8th (Sl. 80) is harsh as well. The 7th is the bright point between two dusthanas. The placement opposite, the 7th lord in the 1st, puts the lord on the self rather than at home. Other angle-to-angle cases: the 4th and the 10th.

- Look for the matching Pancha Mahapurusha yoga in the yoga calculator, and read the second lordship's verse beside Sl. 79.
Questions about the 7th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 79: happiness through the spouse, courage, skill and intelligence, with only a windy constitution noted. Scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148); not a forecast and not medical advice.
- Does it form a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga?
- In this app's engine, yes for ten Ascendants: the lord is in its own sign in an angle. Capricorn (the Moon) and Aquarius (the Sun) are the exceptions, because the rule covers only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
- Does a strong 7th lord mean one marriage or two?
- The Bhrigu Sutras say both, in different sutras. BPHS Sl. 79 speaks only of happiness through the spouse. This app does not predict marriages.
- Can the other lordship spoil it?
- For Taurus and Scorpio rising, the 12th-lord verse (Sl. 139) contradicts Sl. 79 on marriage and, by Sl. 145-148, cancels it there.
- How common is it?
- 246 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
