In short

The 7th lord in the 1st house places the ruler of marriage and partnership in the Ascendant, the house of the self, directly opposite its own sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 73 reads it harshly: wandering affections, a hard nature with skill but little courage, and a windy constitution. The text scales that by strength, and the planet's nature and second house change it considerably.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord is the planet ruling the sign opposite the Ascendant. When it stands in the rising sign itself, the 7th's matters - the spouse, business partners, contracts, the people one deals with face to face - are brought onto the self and the body.

This is the one placement of the 7th lord that sits exactly opposite its own house. Counted from the 7th, the 1st is the 7th: every planet aspects the sign seven from itself, so a 7th lord in the Lagna always aspects its own 7th. The two houses face each other along the chart's main axis, and the planet ruling one sits on the other.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra: marriage, partnerships, trade, open dealings. BPHS Ch. 44 also makes it a maraka house for longevity timing.

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the self, the body and general fortune - both an angle and a trine, and the reference for every other house.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 73

Sl. 73 opens the Yuvati series: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Tanu Bhava, the native will go to others' wives, be wicked, skilful, devoid of courage and afflicted by windy diseases." Of five clauses, one ("skilful") is favourable.

Summarised plainly: the verse describes an unsteady attachment to partners, a hard temperament with ability but little courage, and a constitution classically called "windy" (vata). It is the text's statement about a combination, addressed like the whole chapter to a male native; it is not a description of any reader, and the bodily clause is a classical association, not medical advice. Read structurally, the lord of other people has come to sit on the self, and the verse turns the 7th's theme of partnership into the native's own appetite for it.

The reverse is longer and conditional. Sl. 7 says that if Lagn's lord is a malefic in Yuvati the wife "will not live (long)"; if a benefic, the native will wander, face penury and be dejected - or, alternatively, "become a king" if the planet is strong. Of the two directions, only the reverse makes strength decisive inside the verse itself.

The Kendra-lord rule

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say that benefics owning angles "will not give benefic effects" and malefics owning angles "will not remain inauspicious", and that the 7th and 10th are "specially for happiness". So who the 7th lord is matters before where it goes: a Jupiter, Venus or Mercury ruling the 7th loses some benefic quality by that ownership; a Saturn, Mars or Sun loses some malefic quality. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale Sl. 73 by strength (full, half, a quarter) and combine both lordships of a two-house planet, contrary results cancelling. BPHS Ch. 7 reads the spouse from the Navamsa as well, so a reading of the 7th lord in the birth chart is usually checked there. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse for this placement.

The 7th lord and the rising sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Because the 7th lord's own sign is opposite the rising sign, it is rarely comfortable in the Lagna. No row is friendly by sign, five are enemy signs, six neutral, and Pisces rising puts Mercury, lord of the 4th and 7th, debilitated in Pisces. The second lordship varies: the 2nd (Aries, Libra) makes the planet a double maraka lord; the 12th (Taurus, Scorpio) adds a dusthana; the 10th (Gemini, Sagittarius) and 4th (Virgo, Pisces) make it a lord of two angles; Cancer adds the 8th and Leo the 6th. For Capricorn and Aquarius rising it is a luminary with no second sign.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label in the actual chart, where temporary friendship can lift the table's value a tier.
  • Nature: by Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7, a benefic 7th lord (Jupiter for Gemini and Virgo, Venus for Aries and Scorpio, Mercury for Sagittarius and Pisces) and a malefic one (Mars for Taurus and Libra, Saturn for Cancer and Leo, the Sun for Aquarius) are modified in opposite directions by owning an angle.
  • Association: the 1st receives the 7th aspect from the 7th, and special aspects from Mars (10th, 6th), Jupiter (9th, 5th) and Saturn (11th, 4th) - see drishti.

The Lagna's own lord matters too. With the 7th lord in the rising sign, the 1st lord is somewhere else, and its condition is the other half of the self's reading. The planet-in-house pages - Venus in the 1st, Saturn in the 1st, Jupiter in the 1st - describe the commonest lords in the Lagna without any lordship.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Venus in the Lagna

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 4 December 1985, 06:49 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 15.23.

  • With Scorpio rising, the 7th house is Taurus and the 12th is Libra; Venus rules both.
  • Venus is in Scorpio at 7 degrees, Anuradha pada 2, in the 1st. By sign alone it is neutral; in this chart the engine marks it Friendly sign. It is neither retrograde nor combust.
  • Three planets share the Lagna: the Sun (Scorpio 18.18, ruler of the 10th), Mercury (Scorpio 6.91, ruler of the 8th and 11th, combust and retrograde) and Saturn (Scorpio 8.35, ruler of the 3rd and 4th, combust).
  • The Lagna lord, Mars, is in Virgo in the 11th, and Mercury and Mars occupy each other's signs.

Sl. 73 applies to this Venus as 7th lord, and Sl. 133 as 12th lord in Tanu ("a spendthrift", weak in constitution) - two adverse verses that do not cancel. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 list Venus among the malefics for Vrischik Lagn and say Venus and other malefics "acquire the quality of causing death", which is the maraka classification of Ch. 44, a longevity-timing term this app does not turn into predictions. The crowding of the Lagna is the chart's striking feature: four planets, two of them combust. The engine's yoga detector reports a Parivarthana Yoga between Mars and Mercury, plus Sunapha and Kedara, and nothing that names Venus.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 1st house in 255, or 8.5%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 1st lord in the 7th (Sl. 7), is described above; both at once is an exchange of the two lords across the main axis (parivartana). The 7th lord one house on, in the 2nd (Sl. 74), gains through the spouse; one house back, in the 12th (Sl. 84), speaks of penury and a spendthrift spouse. The 7th lord in the 10th is the other angle-to-angle case with a fuller worked discussion. The spouse is also read from the Navamsa chart.

  1. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Read the 7th lord from the table and check the birth chart for it in the rising sign.
  3. Note its nature (benefic or malefic), its other lordship and the Lagna lord's own condition.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 1st

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 73: unsteady attachments, a hard nature, skill without courage and a windy constitution. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength; this app does not predict relationships, and the health clause is not medical advice.
Does the 7th lord in the Lagna mean an early marriage or a partner who dominates?
No verse in this project's corpus says either. Sl. 73 speaks of the native's temperament, not of timing or of the partner.
Why is the 7th lord rarely strong in the 1st?
Its own sign is opposite the rising sign. By sign alone no Ascendant makes it friendly there, and Pisces rising makes Mercury debilitated.
Is the 7th lord a maraka?
BPHS Ch. 44 classes the 7th lord as a maraka for longevity timing. That is a separate calculation; this app does not make longevity predictions.
Does the 7th lord in the 1st aspect the 7th house?
Yes. Every planet aspects the sign seven from itself, and the 7th is seven from the 1st, so the 7th lord in the Lagna always aspects its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 does not comment on this geometry.
How common is it?
255 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.5%. That counts moments, not people.
