In short
The 8th lord in the 7th house carries the ruler of obstruction and longevity into the house of marriage, partnership and trade. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 91 reads it as two marriages and, only if a malefic joins it there, a downfall in business. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength and by the planet's other lordship.
What the placement means
The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 7th sign, it brings the 8th's themes - obstruction, sudden change, longevity - into the house of the spouse, partnerships, contracts and trade.
Counted from the 8th, the 7th is the 12th house, the sign just behind the lord's own. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered an angle. The 7th and 8th also sit side by side in BPHS's longevity scheme: the 8th is a house of longevity and the 7th is a maraka house, the 12th from the 8th.
The two houses involved
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in Ch. 44.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra and a maraka house: marriage, partnership, trade and the public.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 91
Sl. 91 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native will have two wives. If Randhr's Lord is yuti with a malefic in Yuvati Bhava, there will surely be downfall in his business." The first clause is unconditional; the second applies only with a malefic in conjunction.
The verse addresses both of the 7th's main meanings: the spouse ("two wives") and trade ("business"). The marriage clause is the text's formula in its era's terms, and this app does not predict the number of marriages. The business clause is notable for being conditional: a malefic must be "yuti" - conjunct - with the 8th lord in the 7th. Without that, BPHS does not apply it. Neither clause is a forecast about any reader.
The reverse, Sl. 80 - Yuvati's lord in Randhr - is harsher on the marriage itself: reduced marital happiness, and a spouse described as unwell and disobedient. Both directions trouble the marriage; only Sl. 91 makes part of its reading depend on company.
The 8th-lord rule, and the row where it bites
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the 8th lord is "not auspicious", that it "will prove specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, that ownership of a trine makes it auspicious, and that the Sun's and Moon's 8th lordship "is not evil". For Cancer rising the 8th lord (Saturn) also owns the 7th, so this placement is that harmful combination sitting in its own 7th-house sign. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 7th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Libra | Neutral | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Scorpio | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Sagittarius | Neutral | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Capricorn | Own sign | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Aquarius | Neutral | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Pisces | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Aries | Neutral | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Taurus | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Gemini | Friendly sign | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Cancer | Friendly sign | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Leo | Friendly sign | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Virgo | Debilitated | 3rd |
By sign this is a comfortable placement: no row is an enemy sign, six are friendly, four neutral, and Cancer rising keeps Saturn in its own sign Capricorn. Pisces rising is the one weak row - Venus, lord of the 3rd and 8th, debilitated in Virgo. For Aries and Libra rising the 8th lord is the Lagna lord, so the Ascendant's ruler sits in the 7th.
Each second lordship brings its Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Yuvati. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 103: happiness after marriage, virtue and fame - contradicting Sl. 91's implication for the marriage, so the two cancel there. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 55: honour, religion, happiness from children. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 127: gains through the spouse's relatives. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 31: service to rulers, an unhappy youth and a happy old age. As 7th lord at home (Cancer), Sl. 79: happiness through the spouse. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 7, which is conditional on the planet's nature and strength.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share.
- Conjunction: Sl. 91's business clause turns on a malefic joining the lord in the 7th. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, the malefics are the Sun, Mars and Saturn (and a weak Moon); the engine also counts Rahu and Ketu as malefics.
- Aspect: the 7th is aspected from the 1st, and specially by Mars (4th, 12th), Jupiter (3rd, 11th) and Saturn (5th, 10th) - see drishti. Sl. 91 names conjunction, not aspect.
Because the verse speaks of the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7's instruction to read the spouse from the Navamsa applies, through the Navamsa calculator. Planet-level pages such as Mars in the 7th and Saturn in the 7th describe the planet in the house without lordship.
The planet's nature matters twice here: once for the lord itself, once for its companions. Under Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, the 8th lord is a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun); a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus); Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius, which takes the colour of its company; and the Moon for Sagittarius. Sl. 91's business clause does not ask about the lord's own nature, only about a malefic joining it. So a malefic 8th lord alone in the 7th does not trigger that clause on the wording of the verse, while a benefic 8th lord with Saturn beside it does. That is a literal reading of the verse, and the page offers it as such.
The Kendra-lord rule of Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 touches this placement only where the 8th lord also owns an angle: the 1st for Aries and Libra rising, the 7th itself for Cancer. Elsewhere the 8th lord merely occupies the angle, and its ownership is a dusthana's alone.
Worked example: Virgo rising, Mars in Pisces
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Virgo 28.04.
- With Virgo rising, the 8th house is Aries and the 3rd is Scorpio; Mars rules both. The 7th is Pisces.
- Mars is in Pisces at 22.76 degrees, Revati pada 2, in the 7th. The engine marks it Friendly sign.
- Venus, lord of the 2nd and 9th, shares the 7th at Pisces 23.45, Exalted. No malefic joins Mars.
- The 7th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 5th, Debilitated.
This is a "specifically harmful" row of Ch. 34 (the 8th lord also owning the 3rd), and Ch. 34 Sl. 31-32 list Mars among the malefics for Kanya Lagn while naming Venus auspicious. Sl. 91's first clause applies; its business clause does not, because the planet beside Mars is Venus, a benefic, not a malefic. Sl. 31, for the 3rd lord in Yuvati, applies alongside. The engine's yoga detector reports Malavya Yoga for the exalted Venus in an angle and Vimala Yoga for the Sun, and nothing that names Mars.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 7th house in 248, or 8.3%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse is linked above; together the two lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 8th lord in the 6th is Sarala Yoga; one house on, the 8th lord in the 8th (Sl. 92) is the longevity verse. The other angle placements are the 1st, the 4th and the 10th.

Questions about the 8th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 91: two marriages, and, if a malefic is conjunct the lord in the 7th, a downfall in business. Scaled by strength; not a forecast.
- When does the business clause apply?
- Only when a malefic is conjunct ("yuti") the 8th lord in the 7th. An aspect is not named, and a benefic companion does not trigger it.
- Which Ascendant is the hardest case?
- By Ch. 34, Cancer: Saturn owns both the 7th and the 8th, which the text calls specifically harmful, though here it sits in its own sign.
- Is it a maraka combination?
- The 7th is a maraka house in BPHS Ch. 44, used for longevity timing. This app does not make longevity predictions, and Sl. 91 does not speak of longevity.
- How common is it?
- 248 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people, and is close to the one-in-twelve a single house would suggest.
