In short
The 8th lord in the 8th house is the ruler of longevity and obstruction sitting in its own sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 92 reads it as long life, and is one of the few verses in the chapter that splits by strength: a weak lord gives a medium span and several adverse traits. This app's engine flags Sarala Yoga every time it occurs.
What the placement means
A house lord in its own house looks after its own business. The 8th lord in the 8th means the planet ruling the 8th sign from the Ascendant is standing in that sign: the house of longevity, obstruction, inheritance and hidden matters is held by its own ruler.
It is always in its own sign there, so its dignity is settled; but the house is a dusthana, so what that strength means is contested. BPHS reads it through longevity; a later tradition, by analogy, through the Vipareeta idea of a difficulty confined to its own house.
The two houses involved
Both are the 8th house (Randhra Bhava), a dusthana and, with the 3rd, a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.
The second reference is the 2nd house, which the 8th lord faces from its own house by its 7th aspect - the axis of one's own resources against those that come through others.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 92
Sl. 92 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Randhr Bhava, the native will be long-lived. If the said Grah is weak, being in Randhr Bhava, the longevity will be medium". The weak case continues with a short list of adverse traits, which this page summarises as blameworthy conduct and a habit of blaming others.
This is one of the few verses in Ch. 24 that builds strength into its own wording rather than leaving it to the closing rule. A strong 8th lord at home gives long life; a weak one gives a medium span and the adverse traits. The verse is a classical statement about a combination, not a lifespan estimate: BPHS's actual longevity methods are in Ch. 43, and this app does not compute lifespans or present them.
The Vipareeta analogy and Sarala Yoga
The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita on Vipareeta Raja Yoga - the 8th lord in the 12th or 6th, the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, the 12th lord in the 8th or 6th - and then adds, as the commentator's own view, that "the lord of the 8th in the 8th" should "also give the same results". That extension is the commentator's, not Uttara Kalamrita's and not Parashara's. This app's engine follows the broader rule and flags Sarala Yoga whenever the 8th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, so every chart with this placement shows it.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the 8th lord's own rule: "not auspicious", "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, auspicious if it also owns a trine, and "not evil" for the Sun and Moon. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 combine both lordships of a two-house planet. The Saravali has no verse here.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The lord is always in its own sign, so the dignity column is own sign or better; where degree decides, the engine's moolatrikona or exaltation ranges apply. The last column is the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 8th lord | 8th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Scorpio | Own sign | 1st |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 11th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Capricorn | Own sign | 9th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 7th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Pisces | Own sign | 5th |
| Virgo | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 3rd |
| Libra | Venus | Taurus | Own sign | 1st |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Gemini | Own sign | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Moon | Cancer | Own sign | none |
| Capricorn | Sun | Leo | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | none |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Virgo | Exalted, moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 5th |
| Pisces | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 3rd |
With dignity settled, the second lordship and its verse for a lord in Randhr make the difference. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 8: an accomplished scholar, with illness, anger and harsher traits - and Ch. 34 counts that double lordship (the Lagna being a trine) as the auspicious kind. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 56: little happiness from children, anger. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 104: lack of prosperity. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 128: reversals in undertakings, but long life. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 32, and 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 80, both adverse. For Sagittarius (the Moon) and Capricorn (the Sun) there is no second sign, and Ch. 34 says the luminaries' 8th lordship "is not evil".
Strength changes the reading
Strength is built into Sl. 92 itself, and dignity is fixed at own sign or better, so the questions are what else can weaken the planet:
- Combustion and retrograde motion, which the engine reports. A combust 8th lord at home is the case where a reader might ask whether the verse's "weak" branch applies; BPHS does not define "weak" here. See combustion and dignity.
- The second lordship and its verse, as above.
- Association: the 8th is aspected from the 2nd, and specially by Mars (5th, 1st), Jupiter (4th, 12th) and Saturn (6th, 11th) - see drishti. The Uttara Kalamrita condition, by the commentator's analogy, would ask for freedom from relation with other planets.
The planet's natural class sits underneath: the 8th lord is a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun), a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus), Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius, the Moon for Sagittarius. The planet pages, such as Saturn in the 8th and Venus in the 8th, describe these planets in the 8th without any lordship.
Worked example: Libra rising, Venus in Taurus
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 11 July 1985, 12:57 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Libra 1.01.
- With Libra rising, Venus rules the 1st (Libra) and the 8th (Taurus).
- Venus is in Taurus at 11.73 degrees, Rohini pada 1, in the 8th. The engine marks it Own sign; it is not retrograde or combust.
- No planet shares the 8th. Jupiter, in Capricorn in the 4th, aspects it by its special 5th-house aspect.
- The engine's yoga detector reports Sarala Yoga for Venus.
Here the Lagna lord is the 8th lord, which Ch. 34 counts as the auspicious form of 8th lordship (the Lagna being a trine), and Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 call Venus "neutral" for Tula Lagn. Two verses apply: Sl. 92, at own-sign strength - the long-lived branch, since nothing here marks the planet weak - and Sl. 8, the Lagna lord in Randhr. Jupiter's aspect means the planet is not free of relation, which the commentator's Vipareeta analogy would ask for. The engine also reports Sasa Yoga for Saturn exalted in the Lagna and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga between the Moon and Saturn.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 8th house in 266, or 8.9%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
There is no reverse, since the lord is home. The other Sarala placements are the 8th lord in the 6th and in the 12th, which the Uttara Kalamrita verse names directly. One house back, the 8th lord in the 7th (Sl. 91) gives two marriages; one house on, the 8th lord in the 9th (Sl. 93) is harsh on religion. The parallel own-house dusthana placement is the 6th lord in the 6th (Harsha Yoga).
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Check the birth chart for the 8th lord in its own sign, and note combustion or retrograde motion.
- Confirm Sarala Yoga in the yoga calculator, and read the second lordship's verse beside Sl. 92.
Questions about the 8th lord in the 8th
- What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 8th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 92: long life; if the planet is weak, a medium span and some adverse traits. It is the text's statement about a combination, not a lifespan estimate, and this app does not compute lifespans.
- Is it Sarala Yoga?
- In this app's engine, yes, every time. The classical Vipareeta verse names the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th; the 8th-in-8th case is a commentator's extension by analogy.
- What counts as "weak" in Sl. 92?
- BPHS does not define it in the verse. The planet is always in its own sign here, so readers look at combustion, retrograde motion and association.
- What if my 8th lord is also my Lagna lord?
- For Aries (Mars) and Libra (Venus) rising, the Lagna lord sits in the 8th. Ch. 34 counts that double lordship as auspicious, and Sl. 8 applies beside Sl. 92.
- How common is it?
- 266 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.9%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
- Do BPHS and the Vipareeta tradition agree here?
- Broadly, yes: Sl. 92 gives long life when the lord is strong, and the commentator's analogy reads the 8th lord at home favourably. They differ on the weak case, which only BPHS addresses.
