House lords

The lord of the 6th house in its own house: the BPHS verse, why this placement always forms Harsha Yoga in this app's engine, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and a worked chart with Mars in Scorpio.

In short

The 6th lord in the 6th house is the ruler of enemies, illness and debt sitting in its own sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 66 reads it as friction with one's own kin but friendship with outsiders, and middling comfort in wealth. Because it is a dusthana lord in a dusthana, this app's engine flags Harsha Yoga, a Vipareeta-type combination, every time it occurs.

What the placement means

A house lord in its own house looks after its own business. The 6th lord in the 6th means the planet ruling the 6th sign from the Ascendant is standing in that sign: the house of opponents, illness, debt, litigation and service is held by its own ruler.

For a good house that is straightforwardly favourable. For a dusthana the texts are divided in an interesting way. The Bhrigu Sutras, in the sutras for the Sun in the 6th, say that if the lord of the sixth is weak "there will be destruction of enemies", and the commentator draws the rule that a lord of an evil house "becomes more harmful if it becomes strong". Another line, preserved in later works, says a dusthana lord confined to a dusthana turns the difficulty inward and works in the native's favour. BPHS's verse and the engine's yoga sit on either side of that divide.

The two houses involved

Both houses are the 6th house (Ari Bhava), a dusthana and an upachaya. Its page covers enemies, disease, debts, service and competition as the texts read them.

Seen from the Ascendant, the 6th is in a 6-8 relationship with the 1st house: the 1st is the 8th from the 6th. That is why the condition of the 6th and its lord is traditionally read against the strength of the Lagna.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 66

Sl. 66 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Ari Bhava, the native will have enmity with the group of his kinsmen, but be friendly to others and will enjoy mediocre happiness in matters, like wealth." It is a moderate verse - neither the harshest in the Ari series nor favourable.

The verse localises the 6th's enmity: it falls on one's own kin, not on everyone, and the native is "friendly to others". Wealth and comforts are "mediocre", neither denied nor promised. Compared with the 6th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 63, wholly adverse) or the 12th (Sl. 72, also adverse), the lord at home is read more evenly. It is the text's statement about a combination and not a forecast about anyone's family.

Harsha Yoga and the Vipareeta tradition

The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita on Vipareeta Raja Yoga: the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, the 8th lord in the 12th or 6th, and the 12th lord in the 8th or 6th, free of relation with other planets, are said to make a person "an emperor over other kings" with fame and wealth. The commentator then adds, by analogy, that "the lord of the 6th in the 6th" should give the same results. That extension is the commentator's, not Uttara Kalamrita's and not Parashara's.

This app's engine follows the broader rule: it flags Harsha Yoga whenever the 6th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. So every chart with this placement shows Harsha Yoga in the engine's yoga list. The engine does not test the "free of relation with other planets" condition. BPHS Sl. 66 itself says nothing of a yoga; the two readings should be held side by side, not merged.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add that an owner of Ari gives evil effects, and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale every verse by strength and combine both lordships. The Saravali has no verse on this placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The lord is always in its own sign, so the dignity column is own sign or better; where degree decides it, the engine's moolatrikona or exaltation ranges apply. The last column is the planet's other house.

The 6th lord in its own sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's dignity by degree and the lord's second house.

Dignity is settled; the second lordship is what differs. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord, so the Ascendant's ruler sits in a dusthana - a case Ch. 24 reads through Sl. 6 as well. For Cancer and Capricorn rising it is also the 9th lord, so a trine lord is confined to the 6th. For Virgo it is also the 5th lord. Aries rising is the one row where the engine can return exaltation, because Mercury's exaltation sign Virgo is also its own.

Strength changes the reading

Here the general rule and the yoga point in different directions. Read literally, Sl. 145-148 say a strong lord gives the full effect of its verse, and the verse is moderate. Read through the Vipareeta tradition, a dusthana lord at home is a source of resilience. BPHS does not reconcile the two because it does not contain the second. What a reader can weigh:

  • The second lordship. A good second house (the Lagna, the 5th, the 9th) is the case where confinement in the 6th costs the most, since that lordship's verse for the 6th also applies.
  • Association. The Uttara Kalamrita condition asks that the dusthana lords be free of relation with other planets; BPHS asks generally that association be weighed. The 6th is aspected from the 12th, and specially by Mars (3rd, 11th), Jupiter (2nd, 10th) and Saturn (4th, 9th) - see drishti.
  • Retrograde motion and combustion, which the engine reports per planet.

Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10's natural classes add one more layer. A 6th lord that is a natural malefic - Mars in the 6th for Gemini and Scorpio rising, Saturn in the 6th for Leo and Virgo - has its own planet-in-house reading, which should be read before any lordship is added. A benefic 6th lord at home (Venus for Taurus and Sagittarius, Jupiter for Cancer and Libra) has a different one, and the lordship verse sits on top of each.

Worked example: Gemini rising, Mars in Scorpio

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 14 March 1986, 11:36 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Gemini 0.72.

  • With Gemini rising, Mars rules the 6th (Scorpio) and the 11th (Aries) - two upachaya houses.
  • Mars is in Scorpio at 29.07 degrees, Jyeshtha pada 4, in the 6th. The engine marks it Own sign, not retrograde, not combust.
  • Saturn, lord of the 8th and 9th for Gemini rising, shares the 6th at Scorpio 16, in an enemy sign.
  • The engine's yoga detector reports Harsha Yoga for Mars and Sarala Yoga for Saturn (the 8th lord in the 6th), among others.

Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 call Mars, Jupiter and the Sun malefics for Mithun Lagn and Venus the only auspicious planet, so the lordship side expects little from Mars here; Sl. 66 then applies with an own-sign carrier. The Vipareeta reading is doubled, since two dusthana lords share the 6th, but the Uttara Kalamrita condition asks for freedom from relation with other planets, and these two are conjunct with each other. That verse also lists "the said three lords being connected" by conjunction among its conditions, so the conjunction of the 6th and 8th lords may itself qualify. This page reports the conditions and leaves the judgement open.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 6th house in 235, or 7.8%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The other Harsha placements are the 6th lord in the 8th (Sl. 68) and the 6th lord in the 12th (Sl. 72); both of their BPHS verses are harsher than Sl. 66. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 5th (Sl. 65) strains ties with children; one house later, the 6th lord in the 7th (Sl. 67) reduces happiness in marriage. The corresponding placements for the other dusthana lords are the 8th lord in the 8th and the 12th lord in the 12th.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 6th

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 6th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 66: enmity with one's kinsmen but friendship with others, and middling happiness in wealth and similar matters. Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength.
Is the 6th lord in the 6th always Harsha Yoga?
In this app's engine, yes: it flags Harsha Yoga whenever the 6th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The classical Vipareeta verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 8th and 12th; the 6th-in-6th case is the commentator's extension by analogy.
Is a strong 6th lord good or bad?
The texts differ. BPHS Ch. 24 scales its moderate verse by strength; the Vipareeta tradition reads a dusthana lord at home as favourable. This page sets out both without choosing.
What if the 6th lord is also my Lagna lord?
For Taurus and Scorpio rising, the Lagna lord sits in the 6th. Sl. 6, the Lagna lord in Ari, then applies as well; it is conditional on malefic association and benefic aspect.
How common is it?
235 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.8%.
