In short

The 6th lord in the 5th house brings the ruler of enemies, disputes and debt into the house of children, intelligence and merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 65 reads it as unsteady finances and friction with children and friends, in a person who is nonetheless happy, self-interested and kind. The reverse placement, the 5th lord in the 6th, is read on the same theme.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 5th sign, it takes the 6th's business - rivalry, illness, debt, service - into the house of children, learning, judgement and the merit of past action.

Counted from the 6th, the 5th is the 12th house, the sign just behind the lord's own: from its own point of view the lord is in its house of loss. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has moved into a trine. The two houses are next-door neighbours, and BPHS links them in both directions through the same theme - friction around children.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, competition and service.

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona: children, intelligence, devotion and judgement. Ch. 34 calls it one of the two houses "specially for wealth".

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 65

Sl. 65 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Putr Bhava, the native will have fluctuating finances. He will incur enmity with his sons and friends. He will be happy, selfish and kind." The verse is split almost evenly: unsteady money and strained relationships on one side, happiness and kindness on the other, with self-interest in between.

"Enmity with his sons" is the 6th's signification (enmity) attaching to the 5th's (children). "Fluctuating finances" may connect with the 5th as a house "specially for wealth" in Ch. 34, now disturbed by a dusthana lord - this page's reading, not the text's. "Happy, selfish and kind" is an odd triple; BPHS states it without comment, and this page does not try to resolve it. The verse is the text's statement about a combination, not a forecast about anyone's family.

The reverse placement is on the same theme and harsher. Sl. 54, Putr's lord in Ari, speaks of sons "equal to his enemies", their loss, or an adopted son. Of all the pairs of houses in Ch. 24, the 5th and 6th are among the most consistent: whichever lord moves into the other's house, the text sees conflict over children.

Lordship and strength

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the owner of Ari "will give evil effects". A good house does not cleanse that lordship, and Sl. 15 adds that a trine or angle lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere relation - which bears on the Virgo row, where one planet rules both the 5th and 6th. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale the effect by strength (full, half, a quarter) and combine both lordships of a two-house planet, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus contain no verse for this placement.

The 6th lord and the 5th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Virgo rising is the special row: Saturn rules both the 5th (Capricorn) and the 6th (Aquarius), so here it stands in its own trine sign. Taurus rising is the weakest: Venus, lord of the 1st and 6th, is debilitated in Virgo. Most of the remaining rows are friendly or neutral; no row reaches exaltation. Scorpio rising, like Taurus, makes the 6th lord the Lagna lord too, so the reading of the Ascendant lord in the 5th runs alongside.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 65 mixes good and bad, the factors BPHS names decide which side is louder in a given chart:

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share.
  • The other house: the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio), the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn), the 5th itself (Virgo), the 7th (Leo), or the 3rd or 11th. Each has its own verse for a lord in the 5th, which Sl. 145-148 combine with Sl. 65.
  • Association: the 5th is aspected from the 11th, and specially by Mars (2nd, 10th), Jupiter (1st, 9th) and Saturn (3rd, 8th) - see drishti.

It is worth noticing what happens to the 5th house's own lord in such a chart. If the 6th lord occupies the 5th, the 5th lord is somewhere else, and its condition matters to the house as much as the visitor does. The worked example below is a case where the 5th lord is itself weak. For the commonest planets in this house without lordship, see Mars in the 5th and Saturn in the 5th.

There is also the natural character of the planet. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 count Jupiter and Venus as benefics, the Sun, Mars and Saturn as malefics, Mercury as neutral by company and the Moon as mediocre. A 6th lord in the 5th that is a natural benefic - Venus for Sagittarius rising, Jupiter for Cancer and Libra - is still a 6th lord by ownership; the text applies Sl. 65 to it in the same words as to Mars or Saturn.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mars in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 6 March 1985, 00:19 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 9.38.

  • With Scorpio rising, Mars rules the 1st (Scorpio) and the 6th (Aries). The 5th is Pisces.
  • Mars is in Pisces at 29.48 degrees, Revati pada 4, in the 5th - the last degrees of the sign. The engine marks it Friendly sign.
  • Two planets share the 5th: Mercury (Pisces 4.15, Debilitated and combust; lord of the 8th and 11th) and Venus (Pisces 27.43, Exalted; lord of the 7th and 12th).
  • The 5th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 3rd at 12.34, which the engine marks Debilitated.

Two Ch. 24 verses apply to this Mars. As 6th lord in Putr, Sl. 65. As Lagna lord in Putr, Sl. 5: "mediocre progenic happiness", the loss of the first child, honour, anger, favour with the king. Both verses lean the same way on children, so Sl. 145-148's cancellation does not soften either; it is the "varied results" case where both apply. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 call Mars neutral for Vrischik Lagn. The 5th itself is crowded with lords of the 7th, 8th, 11th and 12th, and the house's own lord is debilitated elsewhere. The engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga whose members include Venus and Mars; nothing specific to the 6th lord.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 5th house in 267, or 8.9% - a count of moments, not of people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse is linked above; when both lords sit in each other's signs, the exchange (parivartana) joins a trine lord with a dusthana lord. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 4th (Sl. 64) pairs a lack of maternal happiness with wealth; one house later, the 6th lord in its own 6th (Sl. 66) brings enmity with kinsmen but friendship with outsiders. The other trine placements are the 1st and the 9th.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 5th

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 5th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 65: fluctuating finances, enmity with sons and friends, yet happy, selfish and kind. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength.
Does this mean conflict with my children?
Sl. 65 lists it among the results the text attaches to the combination. It is not a prediction, and this app does not make claims about family relationships.
Does a dusthana lord spoil a trine?
BPHS Ch. 34 says owning the 6th gives evil effects, and Ch. 24 reads this placement as mixed. Sl. 145-148 weigh it with the planet's strength and other lordship.
Which Ascendant makes one planet lord of both the 5th and the 6th?
Virgo: Saturn rules Capricorn (5th) and Aquarius (6th), so here it sits in its own sign Capricorn.
Is the 6th lord in the 5th a Vipareeta yoga?
No. The Vipareeta conditions quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary concern the 6th, 8th and 12th lords placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 5th is a trine, so the engine does not flag Harsha Yoga for this placement.
How common is it?
267 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.9%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
