House lords

The lord of the 6th house placed in the 4th: the mixed BPHS verse on the mother, temperament and wealth, the planet for each Ascendant, and a worked chart where the lord exchanges signs with the 4th lord.

In short

The 6th lord in the 4th house brings the ruler of enemies, illness and debt into the house of the mother, home and inner ease. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 64 is mixed: little happiness from the mother and a jealous, talebearing streak, together with intelligence and great wealth. Strength, the second lordship and company decide how much of it the text would apply.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord is the planet ruling the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 4th sign, it carries the 6th's themes - opposition, illness, debt, service - into the house the texts read for the mother, the dwelling, land and vehicles, schooling and the settled mind.

Counted from the 6th, the 4th is the 11th: the lord sits in the house of gain reckoned from its own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered an angle. Both counts show up in Sl. 64, which pairs losses in 4th-house matters with a gain - "very rich" - that is hard to explain from the 4th alone.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, litigation and service.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava), BPHS's Bandhu, is a kendra: the mother, home, property, conveyances, early education and contentment.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 64

Sl. 64 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Bandhu Bhava, the native will be devoid maternal happiness, be intelligent, be a tale bearer, be jealous, evil-minded and very rich." (The translation drops the "of".) Three clauses describe temperament harshly, one denies a 4th-house good, and two are favourable: intelligence and great wealth.

The first clause shows the logic of Ch. 24 plainly: the 6th's adversity attaches to the 4th's chief person, the mother. The temperament clauses - talebearing, jealousy, ill will - read as the 6th's contentiousness settling into the private, domestic sphere of the 4th. The wealth clause may reflect the 11th-from-the-6th count noted above, but that is this page's suggestion; the text does not explain it. Like every harsh line in the chapter, this is BPHS's statement about a combination, not a description of anyone reading.

The reverse placement repeats the first clause and drops the wealth. Sl. 42, Bandhu's lord in Ari, says the native "will be devoid of maternal happiness, be given to anger, be a thief and a conjurer, be independent in action and be indisposed". Linking the 4th and 6th lords in either direction, BPHS twice names the loss of maternal happiness. It is one of the clearest cases in Ch. 24 of two reverse verses agreeing.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the lordship frame: an owner of Ari gives evil effects. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 add the strength frame: full, half or a quarter of the effect, and both lordships of a two-house planet combined, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse for this placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 6th lord and the 4th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

The first five Ascendants, Aries to Leo, all put the 6th lord in an enemy sign. Two rows reach exaltation: Sagittarius rising (Venus, lord of the 6th and 11th, in Pisces) and Aquarius rising (the Moon in Taurus). Libra rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 6th, debilitated in Capricorn. Scorpio and Taurus rising make the 6th lord the Lagna lord too.

Strength changes the reading

Sl. 64 mixes adverse and favourable clauses, and BPHS does not separate them; it applies the whole verse in proportion to strength. What modifies it:

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label for the share of Sl. 64.
  • The other house: the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio), the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn), the 5th (Virgo), the 7th (Leo), or another upachaya (the 3rd for Aries and Libra, the 11th for Gemini and Sagittarius). Each brings its own Ch. 24 verse for a lord in the 4th.
  • Association: the 4th is aspected from the 10th, and specially by Mars (1st, 9th), Jupiter (12th, 8th) and Saturn (2nd, 7th) - see drishti.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also make a point about angles: benefics owning angles lose benefic force and malefics owning angles lose malefic force. That concerns ownership of an angle, which the 6th lord does not gain by sitting in one, so it applies only to the rows where the 6th lord also owns an angle (Taurus and Scorpio, where it owns the 1st; Leo, where it owns the 7th). The planet-level pages - Mars in the 4th, Saturn in the 4th - describe the commonest lords in this house without lordship.

Natural character is the last layer. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 class Jupiter and Venus as benefics, the Sun, Mars and Saturn as malefics, Mercury as neutral and the Moon as mediocre, stronger when full. For five Ascendants the 6th lord is a natural malefic (Mars for Gemini and Scorpio, Saturn for Leo and Virgo, the Sun for Pisces) and for four it is a benefic (Venus for Taurus and Sagittarius, Jupiter for Cancer and Libra). BPHS gives Sl. 64 the same wording for all of them; the difference shows only when the planet-in-house descriptions and the lordship verse are read together, which is how a reader would weigh a real chart rather than this table.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mars in Aquarius

This is the first moment in the engine's deterministic search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator. The Ascendant is Scorpio 28.81.

  • With Scorpio rising, Mars rules the 1st (Scorpio) and the 6th (Aries). The 4th is Aquarius.
  • Mars is in Aquarius at 11.51 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 2, in the 4th. The engine marks it Friendly sign; it is neither retrograde nor combust.
  • Venus, lord of the 7th and 12th, is with it at Aquarius 2.74.
  • The 4th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 1st - so Mars and Saturn occupy each other's signs.

Two verses apply to this Mars. As 6th lord in Bandhu it carries Sl. 64; as Lagna lord in Bandhu it carries Sl. 4 - "endowed with paternal and maternal happiness", many brothers, lustful, virtuous and charming. On the mother the two verses contradict each other outright, which is the case Sl. 145-148 resolve by cancellation. The exchange with Saturn adds a parivartana, which the engine's yoga detector reports as Parivarthana Yoga (Mars and Saturn), alongside a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes Venus and Mars in the 4th. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 call Mars neutral for Vrischik Lagn and list Venus and Saturn among its malefics, so the company and the exchange partner are planets the text does not favour for this Ascendant.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 4th house in 275, or 9.2%. This counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 6th (Sl. 42), is quoted above. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 63) is wholly adverse; one house later, the 6th lord in the 5th (Sl. 65) brings fluctuating finances and strained ties with children and friends. The other angle placements - the 1st, the 7th, the 10th - each pair a 6th-house loss with a gain, as Sl. 64 does.

  1. Find the Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Check the birth chart for the 6th lord in the 4th sign, with its dignity.
  3. Read the verse for its other lordship in the 4th beside Sl. 64; where they conflict, Sl. 145-148 say they cancel.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 4th

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 4th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 64: little happiness from the mother, intelligent, a tale-bearer, jealous, ill-intentioned and very rich. It is the text's claim about a combination, scaled by the lord's strength.
Does this placement say something about my mother?
Sl. 64 and its reverse, Sl. 42, both name a lack of maternal happiness. These are classical statements about combinations, not predictions; this app does not make claims about any relationship.
Why does the verse say "very rich"?
BPHS does not say. One observation is that the 4th is the 11th house, the house of gain, counted from the 6th; that is this page's suggestion, not the text's.
Which Ascendants give the strongest lord here?
Sagittarius (Venus exalted in Pisces) and Aquarius (the Moon exalted in Taurus). Libra gives Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn.
What if the 6th lord is also my Lagna lord?
For Taurus (Venus) and Scorpio (Mars) rising, the same planet rules the 1st and 6th. Then Sl. 4, the Lagna lord in the 4th, applies too, and it is favourable about the mother where Sl. 64 is not; Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel.
How common is it?
275 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.2%. That counts moments, not people.
