In short
The 6th lord in the 3rd house moves the ruler of enemies and conflict into the house of siblings, courage and effort. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 63 reads it adversely: a quick temper, little courage, hostility with brothers and sisters, and servants who do not obey. Both houses are upachayas, and the planet's strength and other lordship decide how much of the verse applies.
What the placement means
The 6th house lord is the planet ruling the 6th sign from the Ascendant. When it stands in the 3rd sign, the 6th's themes - rivalry, dispute, illness, service - are carried into the house of younger siblings, personal courage, initiative, communication and the people who work for one.
Counted from the 6th, the 3rd is the 10th: the lord sits in an angle from its own house. Counted from the Ascendant, the move is from one upachaya to another, both houses of the group the texts expect to improve with effort and time. Yet BPHS reads this pairing among the least favourable in the Ari series.
The two houses involved
The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana as well as an upachaya - the house of enemies, disease, debts and service.
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is an upachaya: the co-born, valour, effort, short journeys and servants. BPHS Ch. 34 groups its lord with the 6th and 11th lords as owners that "give evil effects".
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 63
Sl. 63 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Sahaj Bhava, the native will be given to anger, be bereft of courage, inimical to all of his co-born and will have disobedient servants." Every clause is adverse, and there is no benefic condition to soften it.
The verse maps the 6th onto each of the 3rd's significations in turn. Courage, the 3rd's valour, is lost. The co-born, the 3rd's siblings, become opponents, which is the 6th's word. Servants, a 3rd-house matter, turn disobedient. Anger is the temperament left over. As a reading of how the clauses are built this is this page's, but the parallel is close. It is the text's claim about a combination and not a forecast about anyone's family.
The reverse placement shares the sibling theme with a softer edge. Sl. 30, Sahaj's lord in Ari, says the native "will be inimical to his co-born", but also "affluent", not well disposed to the maternal uncle and "dear to his maternal aunt". The two lords linked either way lead BPHS to sibling enmity; only the reverse adds wealth.
Two difficult lordships meeting
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say that any planet "owning Sahaj, Ari, or Labh Bhava, will give evil effects", and that "in each group the significance will be in the ascending order". The placement therefore puts a lord BPHS calls evil into the house of another lord BPHS calls evil. For Aries and Libra rising one planet owns both houses (Mercury, Jupiter), and the placement is that planet in its own 3rd-house sign.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale everything by strength - full, half or a quarter - and combine both lordships of a two-house planet, with contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus have no verse for the 6th lord in the 3rd.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 3rd sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 6th lord | 3rd house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | Gemini | Own sign | 3rd |
| Taurus | Venus | Cancer | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Gemini | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Virgo | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Leo | Saturn | Libra | Exalted | 7th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Scorpio | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Libra | Jupiter | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 3rd |
| Scorpio | Mars | Capricorn | Exalted | 1st |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Pisces | Debilitated | 9th |
| Aquarius | Moon | Aries | Neutral | none |
| Pisces | Sun | Taurus | Enemy sign | none |
Dignity varies widely here. Two rows are exalted: Leo rising (Saturn, lord of the 6th and 7th, in Libra) and Scorpio rising (Mars, the Lagna and 6th lord, in Capricorn). Aries and Libra rising keep the lord in its own sign because it also owns the 3rd. Capricorn rising puts Mercury, lord of the 6th and 9th, debilitated in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs.
Strength changes the reading
With an adverse verse, strength cuts the other way from a favourable one. Read literally, Sl. 145-148 say a strong 6th lord gives more of Sl. 63, a weak one less. BPHS does not say that a strong dusthana lord turns its verse round. What changes the picture is what else the planet owns and what it is with:
- Dignity, from the engine's dignity label - the share of the verse that applies.
- The other house: the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio) or the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn) or 5th (Virgo) bring a good lordship along; the 3rd itself (Aries, Libra) or the 11th (Gemini, Sagittarius) add another upachaya lordship.
- Association: the 3rd is aspected from the 9th, and specially by Mars (12th, 8th), Jupiter (11th, 7th) and Saturn (1st, 6th) - see drishti.
The upachaya character of both houses is a background fact many readers bring in: planets in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are classically read as gaining strength over time. Sl. 63 does not mention it and this page does not use it to soften the verse. The planet-level pages, such as Saturn in the 3rd and Mars in the 3rd, describe the planets in this house independently of lordship, and they are worth reading beside this page because the lordship verse and the planet-in-house verse can point in different directions.
Worked example: Virgo rising, Saturn in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; it can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Virgo 28.04.
- With Virgo rising, the 6th house is Aquarius and the 5th is Capricorn; Saturn rules both. The 3rd is Scorpio.
- Saturn is in Scorpio at 4.37 degrees, Anuradha pada 1, in the 3rd. The engine marks it Enemy sign, not retrograde, not combust.
- Nothing joins Saturn and nothing aspects the 3rd. The 3rd lord, Mars, is in Pisces in the 7th.
- From the 3rd, Saturn's special aspects fall on the 5th (Capricorn, its own trine sign) and the 12th; its 7th aspect falls on the 9th.
Because Saturn rules a trine and a dusthana here, two verses of Ch. 24 apply at once: Sl. 63 for Ari's lord in Sahaj, and Sl. 51 for Putr's lord in Sahaj (attached to siblings, a tale-bearer, miserly, absorbed in one's own work). They contradict each other on siblings - attachment against enmity - which is exactly the situation Sl. 145-148 address: contrary results cancel, varied ones both occur. An enemy-sign Saturn gives both at reduced strength. Ch. 34 Sl. 31-32 (Kanya Lagn) do not mention Saturn either way. The engine's yoga detector, run on the chart, reports Vimala Yoga for the Sun (the 12th lord in the 6th) and Malavya Yoga for Venus; nothing involves Saturn.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 3rd house in 257, or 8.6%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 6th (Sl. 30), is quoted above; both together form an exchange (parivartana) between two lords that Ch. 34 groups as evil. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 62) is favourable; one house later, the 6th lord in the 4th (Sl. 64) is mixed - little happiness from the mother, jealousy, yet great wealth. The 6th lord's other upachaya placements, the 10th and the 11th, read more kindly than the 3rd.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Check the birth chart for the 6th lord in the 3rd sign; note its dignity.
- If the planet rules a trine or the Lagna as well, read that lordship's verse beside Sl. 63.
Questions about the 6th lord in the 3rd
- What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 3rd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 63: given to anger, lacking courage, hostile to all one's siblings, with disobedient servants. It is the text's claim about a combination, scaled by strength.
- Is it a Vipareeta yoga?
- No. The Vipareeta conditions concern the 6th, 8th and 12th lords in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses. The 3rd is an upachaya, not a dusthana.
- Does a strong 6th lord here help?
- Read literally, a strong lord gives more of the verse it carries. What can offset Sl. 63 is a good second lordship (the Lagna, the 5th or the 9th), whose own verse Sl. 145-148 say is combined with it.
- Which Ascendants make the same planet lord of the 3rd and 6th?
- Aries (Mercury) and Libra (Jupiter). There the placement is the planet in its own 3rd-house sign.
- Does this mean I will fall out with my siblings?
- Sl. 63 names hostility with the co-born as one of its clauses. It is a classical statement about a combination, scaled by the planet's strength and combined with its other lordship; this app does not predict family relationships.
- How common is it?
- 257 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6%. That counts moments in time, not people.
