In short
The 6th lord in the 10th house brings the ruler of competition, service and enemies into the house of career and public standing. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 70 reads it as being well known among one's people, a capable speaker and happy abroad, with a strained attitude toward the father. Both houses are upachayas, the kind the texts expect to improve with time.
What the placement means
The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 10th sign, it brings the 6th's matters - competition, service, disputes, illness and debt - into the house of work, rank, authority and reputation.
Counted from the 6th, the 10th is the 5th house: a trine from the lord's own sign, which is a comfortable position by that count. Counted from the Ascendant, the lord has gone from one upachaya to another, and from a dusthana into the strongest angle. The 6th is the house of daily service and the 10th the house of a career, so the link between them is an easy one to see.
The two houses involved
The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and an upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, service and competition.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is a kendra and an upachaya: action, profession, status and public life. BPHS's own verses for lords entering or leaving the 10th (Ch. 24 Sl. 10, 110, 114) repeatedly mention the father, so the text links this house with him too.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 70
Sl. 70 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Karm Bhava, the native will be well known among his men, will not be respectfully disposed to his father and will be happy in foreign countries. He will be a gifted speaker." Three of four clauses are favourable.
Reputation "among his men" belongs to the 10th as the house of standing. Speech is less obviously a 10th-house matter, though BPHS gave the same gift to the 6th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 62: "a skilful speaker"). Happiness in "foreign countries" also repeats Sl. 62's living "in alien countries". Two different placements of the 6th lord linking it with speech and life abroad suggests the text associates those things with this lord generally. The clause about the father is the 6th's friction reaching a figure the 10th is often read for. These are this page's observations on the wording; BPHS gives no reasons, and the clause about the father is the text's claim, not a forecast.
The reverse reads harder. Sl. 114, Karm's lord in Ari, says the native "will be bereft of paternal bliss", lacks wealth despite skill and is "troubled by enemies". Both directions touch the father; only the reverse adds poverty and enemies. As often in Ch. 24, the good house's lord falling into the dusthana is read more severely than the dusthana lord rising into the good house.
Lordship and strength
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the owner of Ari gives evil effects; the 10th does not change the planet's lordship. Sl. 15 says a trine or angle lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere relation, which matters for the Cancer and Capricorn rows, where the 6th lord also rules the 9th and is therefore a 9th lord in the 10th. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale the verse by strength and combine both lordships. The Bhrigu Sutras, in the sutras on the Sun in the 6th, add that a weak 6th lord gives "destruction of enemies", a principle that pulls against BPHS's scale for this lordship. The Saravali has no verse here.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 10th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 6th lord | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | Capricorn | Neutral | 3rd |
| Taurus | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 1st |
| Gemini | Mars | Pisces | Friendly sign | 11th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 9th |
| Leo | Saturn | Taurus | Friendly sign | 7th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 5th |
| Libra | Jupiter | Cancer | Exalted | 3rd |
| Scorpio | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 1st |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Virgo | Debilitated | 11th |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 9th |
| Aquarius | Moon | Scorpio | Debilitated | none |
| Pisces | Sun | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | none |
This is mostly a friendly placement: eight rows are friendly signs. Libra rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 6th, exalted in Cancer. Two rows are debilitated: Sagittarius rising (Venus, lord of the 6th and 11th, in Virgo) and Aquarius rising (the Moon in Scorpio). Taurus and Scorpio rising make the 6th lord the Lagna lord as well, so the Ascendant's ruler is in the 10th - a placement Ch. 24 Sl. 10 reads very favourably.
That Taurus and Scorpio case shows Sl. 145-148 at work on a single subject. Sl. 10, the Lagna lord in Karm, gives "paternal happiness, royal honour, fame among men" and self-earned wealth. Sl. 70, the 6th lord in Karm, says the native will not be respectfully disposed to the father. When one planet carries both verses, the two father clauses pull in opposite directions and, by the chapter's rule, cancel; the clauses about fame and standing appear in both and are reinforced. It is a useful illustration of why BPHS insists that a two-house planet be read through both its lordships rather than one.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share; the Bhrigu Sutras read a weak 6th lord as better against enemies.
- The other house: the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio), the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn), the 5th (Virgo), the 7th (Leo), or the 3rd or 11th. Each brings its own Ch. 24 verse for the 10th.
- Association: the 10th is aspected from the 4th, and specially by Mars (7th, 3rd), Jupiter (6th, 2nd) and Saturn (8th, 1st) - see drishti.
The planet's natural character shapes how a 6th-lord verse sits in the house of career. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, Mars, Saturn and the Sun are malefics; Jupiter and Venus benefics; Mercury neutral by company; the Moon mediocre in benefice. The planet-level pages - Mercury in the 10th, Saturn in the 10th - describe those planets in the 10th without any lordship, and they should be read beside this one.
Worked example: Capricorn rising, Mercury in Libra
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 10 October 1985, 15:07 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Capricorn 25.96.
- With Capricorn rising, the 6th house is Gemini and the 9th is Virgo, both ruled by Mercury. The 10th is Libra.
- Mercury is in Libra at 5.76 degrees, Chitra pada 4, in the 10th. The engine marks it Friendly sign and combust.
- Ketu shares the 10th at Libra 16.54.
- The 10th lord, Venus, is in Leo in the 8th.
Two Ch. 24 verses apply to this Mercury. As 6th lord in Karm, Sl. 70. As 9th lord in Karm, Sl. 106 - "a king, or equal to him, or be a minister, or an Army chief, be virtuous and dear to all". These are not contrary so much as varied, and Sl. 145-148 say varied results both come to pass, by strength. Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 name Mercury and Venus as the auspicious planets for Makar Lagn; Sl. 15 says Mercury's 6th lordship stops its 9th-in-10th relation from making a Raj Yog by mere relation. Combustion weakens it. The 10th's own lord is in the 8th. The engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga involving Mars, Saturn, Venus and the Moon in this chart, but nothing that names Mercury.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 10th house in 228, or 7.6%. That counts moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 10th lord in the 6th (Sl. 114), is quoted above; together they would be an exchange (parivartana). One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 9th (Sl. 69) unsettles fortune; one house later, the 6th lord in the 11th (Sl. 71) gains through enemies. The 6th lord in the 2nd shares this verse's speech and foreign-lands themes.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 10th
- What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 10th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 70: well known among one's people, not respectful toward the father, happy abroad and a gifted speaker. It is scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148).
- Is the 6th lord in the 10th good for a career?
- Sl. 70 is mostly favourable and mentions reputation, not career outcomes. This app does not predict careers; the verse is one input, combined with the planet's other lordship and strength.
- Does it mean conflict with my father?
- Sl. 70 names a lack of respect toward the father as one clause. It is the text's statement about a combination, not a prediction about any relationship.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest lord here?
- Libra: Jupiter exalted in Cancer. Sagittarius (Venus) and Aquarius (the Moon) give the lord debilitated.
- How common is it?
- 228 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.6%.
