In short

The 6th lord in the 2nd house moves the ruler of enemies, debts and service into the house of family, speech and wealth. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 62 reads it favourably: enterprising, well known among one's own people, a skilful speaker, happy, absorbed in one's own work, and living in other lands. It is scaled by strength and by the planet's second house.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Standing in the 2nd sign, it takes the 6th house's matters - contests, opponents, illness, debt and service - into the house of the family, the voice, food and stored wealth.

Counted from the 6th, the 2nd is the 9th: the lord stands in the trine of fortune reckoned from its own house. That may be why the verse for this placement is among the brighter ones in the Ari series. From the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has moved into a house that is neither an angle nor a trine but carries real weight - the house of resources and of speech.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya; its page covers enemies, illness, debt and service.

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) covers family, speech, food and accumulated wealth. BPHS Ch. 44 also names it the stronger maraka house, a classification used only in longevity timing.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 62

Sl. 62 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Dhan Bhava, the native will be adventurous, famous among his people, will live in alien countries, be happy, be a skilful speaker and be always interested in his own work." There is no adverse clause in it, which is unusual for a 6th-lord verse.

Each clause has a plausible source. "A skilful speaker" is the 2nd house, the house of the voice. "Famous among his people" is the 2nd as the family and kin. "Adventurous" and "interested in his own work" sound like the 6th's competitive drive. Living "in alien countries" is the one surprise; BPHS gives no reason. The same phrase returns in Sl. 70 (the 6th lord in the 10th: "happy in foreign countries"), so Ch. 24 seems to associate the 6th lord with life away from home in more than one placement. These links are this page's reading of the wording.

The reverse placement is conditional where Sl. 62 is not. Sl. 18 says that if Dhan's lord is in Ari "along with a benefic", the native will gain wealth through enemies; if joined by a malefic, there will be loss through enemies and an injury to the legs. When the lord of wealth falls into the house of enemies, BPHS makes the result depend on company; when the lord of enemies comes to the house of wealth, it does not.

Lordship still counts

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say an owner of Ari "will give evil effects", so the 6th lord carries some difficulty wherever it sits; a favourable placement verse does not erase its lordship. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 say the effects arrive by strength - full, half or a quarter - and that a planet owning two houses gives both sets of results, contrary ones cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus contain no verse for the 6th lord in the 2nd.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 6th lord and the 2nd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

This is a comfortable placement for most 6th lords: eight rows come out friendly by sign. Two are exalted: Virgo rising (Saturn, lord of the 5th and 6th, in Libra) and Pisces rising (the Sun in Aries). One is debilitated: Gemini rising, where Mars, lord of the 6th and 11th, sits in Cancer. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord, so this is the Ascendant lord in the 2nd as well.

Strength changes the reading

A wholly favourable verse attached to a planet whose lordship BPHS calls evil invites the question of which wins. Ch. 24 does not rank them; Sl. 145-148 tell the reader to combine. Three inputs carry the weight:

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the full / half / quarter share.
  • The other house: the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio), the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn), the 5th (Virgo), the 7th (Leo), or another upachaya (the 3rd for Aries and Libra, the 11th for Gemini and Sagittarius).
  • Association: the 2nd receives the 7th aspect from the 8th, and special aspects from Mars (11th, 7th), Jupiter (10th, 6th) and Saturn (12th, 5th) - see drishti.

The planet's nature changes how the verse sits in the house of speech. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, Venus (Taurus, Sagittarius rising) and Jupiter (Cancer, Libra) are benefics, Mars (Gemini, Scorpio) and Saturn (Leo, Virgo) malefics, Mercury (Aries, Capricorn) neutral. The Venus in the 2nd and Mars in the 2nd pages show how far apart the texts' descriptions of those planets in the 2nd are, before any lordship is added.

Worked example: Taurus rising, Venus in Gemini

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 16 August 1985, 23:25 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Taurus 0.45.

  • With Taurus rising, the 6th house is Libra and the 1st is Taurus; Venus rules both. The 2nd is Gemini.
  • Venus is in Gemini at 22.94 degrees, Punarvasu pada 1, in the 2nd. The engine marks it Friendly sign; it is neither retrograde nor combust.
  • No planet shares the 2nd and none aspects it by the engine's whole-sign aspect rule.
  • The 2nd lord, Mercury, is in Cancer in the 3rd.

This chart illustrates the Taurus special case. Venus here is both the Lagna lord and the 6th lord, so two Ch. 24 verses apply: Sl. 62 for the 6th lord in Dhan, and Sl. 2 for the Lagna lord in Dhan ("gainful, scholarly, happy, endowed with good qualities, be religious, honourable"). Both are favourable, so Sl. 145-148's cancellation has little to cancel. Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 add a twist: for Vrishabh Lagn they list Venus among the malefics and name Saturn and the Sun as auspicious - the Lagna lord is not counted among the auspicious planets for its own Ascendant. The verse gives no reason; the 6th lordship is the obvious candidate, but that is this page's inference, not the text's statement. The Venus is unaccompanied and unaspected, and the engine's yoga detector reports nothing that involves it.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 2nd house in 225, or 7.5%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 6th (Sl. 18), is quoted above; together the two lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 6th lord in the 1st (Sl. 61) mixes illness with fame and wealth; one house on, the 6th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 63) speaks of anger, lack of courage and hostility to siblings. The 2nd is the gentlest of the three. Sl. 70, the 6th lord in the 10th, shares the foreign-lands theme.

  1. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Read the 6th lord from the table and check the birth chart for it in the 2nd sign.
  3. Note its dignity and its other house; for Taurus and Scorpio rising, read the Lagna-lord verse too.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 2nd

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 2nd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 62: adventurous, famous among one's people, living in other lands, happy, a skilful speaker and absorbed in one's own work. The result is scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148).
Is a dusthana lord in the 2nd harmful to wealth?
Sl. 62 contains nothing adverse about wealth. BPHS Ch. 34 does say owning the 6th gives evil effects, which is part of the planet's overall reading.
Does the verse mean I will live abroad?
It lists living in other lands among the results the text attaches to the combination. It is not a prediction, and this app does not make one.
Which Ascendants give the strongest lord here?
Virgo (Saturn exalted in Libra) and Pisces (the Sun exalted in Aries). Gemini rising gives Mars debilitated in Cancer.
Why does BPHS call Venus a malefic for Taurus rising?
Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 list Jupiter, Venus and the Moon as malefics for Vrishabh Lagn and name Saturn and the Sun as auspicious. The verse states the classification without explaining it. Venus rules both the 1st and the 6th for this Ascendant.
The 2nd is a maraka house. Does that matter here?
Ch. 44 uses the maraka classification for timing longevity, a separate calculation. Sl. 62 contains nothing adverse, and this app does not make longevity predictions.
How common is it?
225 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.5%. That counts moments, not people.
