In short
The 6th lord in the 11th house moves the ruler of enemies and competition into the house of gains. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 71 reads it as gaining wealth through one's opponents, with a virtuous and enterprising nature and somewhat less happiness from children. It links two upachaya houses and is one of the more favourable verses for the 6th lord.
What the placement means
The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 11th sign, it carries the 6th house's affairs - rivals, disputes, service, debt and illness - into the house of income, gains, elder siblings, friends and the fulfilment of hopes.
Counted from the 6th, the 11th is the 6th house again: the lord is as far from its own sign as the 6th is from the Ascendant. Counted from the Ascendant, it has moved from one upachaya to another. Of all the houses a 6th lord can reach, the house of gain is the one where the text most plainly turns opposition into profit.
The two houses involved
The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, competition and service.
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is an upachaya and the house of gains. Ch. 34 groups its owner with the 3rd and 6th lords as planets that "give evil effects" by lordship.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 71
Sl. 71 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Labh Bhava, the native will gain wealth through his enemies, be virtuous, adventurous and will be somewhat bereft of progenic happiness." Three clauses are favourable and one mildly restrictive ("somewhat").
The first clause is the verse's core and has a clear structure: the 6th's enemies, delivered into the 11th's gains, become a source of wealth. The same idea appears in BPHS's verse for the 2nd lord in the 6th with a benefic (Sl. 18: wealth "through his enemies"), so Ch. 24 uses the formula more than once. The clause on children may reflect the 11th's position as the 7th from the 5th, but that is this page's suggestion and not stated by the text. The verse is the text's claim about a combination, not a forecast about anyone's family.
The reverse is much harsher. Sl. 126, Labh's lord in Ari, says the native "will be afflicted by diseases, be cruel, living in foreign places and troubled by enemies". Here again the lord of a good-for-gain house falling into the 6th is read more severely than the 6th lord rising into the 11th.
Two evil lordships, one good result
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 list the owners of Sahaj, Ari and Labh together as planets that "will give evil effects", adding that "in each group the significance will be in the ascending order". The 6th lord in the 11th therefore puts one member of that group into another's house, yet Ch. 24 reads it favourably. The resolution is in the difference between owning and occupying: Ch. 34 speaks of lordship, Ch. 24 of placement. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising, one planet owns both the 6th and 11th, and the placement is that planet in its own 11th-house sign.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale the verse by strength and combine both lordships of a two-house planet. The Bhrigu Sutras, in their sutras on the Sun in the 6th, say a weak 6th lord gives "destruction of enemies" - a principle that, for this lordship, cuts against BPHS's full-half-quarter scale. The Saravali has no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 11th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 6th lord | 11th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 3rd |
| Taurus | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 1st |
| Gemini | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 11th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Leo | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 7th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Libra | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 3rd |
| Scorpio | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 11th |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 9th |
| Aquarius | Moon | Sagittarius | Neutral | none |
| Pisces | Sun | Capricorn | Enemy sign | none |
Taurus rising puts Venus - lord of the 1st and 6th - exalted in Pisces. Gemini and Sagittarius rising put Mars and Venus in their own 11th-house signs (moolatrikona for much of them). Four rows are enemy signs: Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces rising. No row is debilitated. For Pisces rising the 6th lord is the Sun, which rules nothing else, so its reading is the 6th lordship alone.
The rows with a second lordship bring a second Ch. 24 verse into play, and here several of them agree with Sl. 71 rather than fight it. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the planet is also the 11th lord in its own house, which Sl. 131 reads as gain "in all his undertakings", with learning and happiness increasing day by day. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it is also the Lagna lord in the 11th, which Sl. 11 reads as constant gains, good qualities and fame. In those four rows Sl. 145-148's rule about varied results applies: the verses stack rather than cancel, at whatever strength the planet has.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share of Sl. 71.
- The other house: the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio), the 9th (Cancer, Capricorn), the 5th (Virgo), the 7th (Leo), the 3rd (Aries, Libra) or the 11th itself (Gemini, Sagittarius). Its verse for a lord in the 11th is read alongside.
- Association: the 11th is aspected from the 5th, and specially by Mars (8th, 4th), Jupiter (7th, 3rd) and Saturn (9th, 2nd) - see drishti.
Because the 11th is an upachaya, a reader may also recall the classical expectation that planets there grow in effect with time. Sl. 71 does not say so, and this page notes it only as background. The planet's own description in the 11th - Sun in the 11th, Venus in the 11th and so on - is a separate reading that sits beside the lordship verse.
Worked example: Pisces rising, the Sun in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; it can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Pisces 23.04.
- With Pisces rising, the 6th house is Leo, ruled by the Sun alone. The 11th is Capricorn.
- The Sun is in Capricorn at 5.46 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 3, in the 11th. The engine marks it Neutral.
- Jupiter - lord of the 1st and 10th for Pisces rising - is with it at Capricorn 2.09, Debilitated and combust.
- Saturn, the 11th lord, is in Scorpio in the 9th and aspects the 11th by its special 3rd-house aspect.
The Sun here carries Sl. 71 and no other lordship, so the verse applies on its own terms, at neutral strength. Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 list the Sun among the malefics for Meen Lagn. What makes the chart instructive is the company: the 6th lord sits beside the Lagna lord and burns it - Jupiter is combust and debilitated. Ch. 24 does not legislate for one lord harming another by proximity, so this page notes the fact without a verdict. Elsewhere in the chart, Mars in Aquarius and Saturn in Scorpio occupy each other's signs, which the engine's yoga detector reports as Parivarthana Yoga; it also finds Amala, Sarala and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga, none of which names the Sun.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 11th house in 251, or 8.4% - a property of the moments sampled, not of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 11th lord in the 6th (Sl. 126), is quoted above; together the lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 10th (Sl. 70) brings reputation and life abroad; one house later, the 6th lord in the 12th (Sl. 72) is among the harshest of the series and also forms Harsha Yoga. The other upachaya placement, the 6th lord in the 3rd, is read very differently.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 11th
- What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 11th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 71: gains of wealth through enemies, virtuous, adventurous, somewhat less happiness from children. It is scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148).
- Is this a good placement for the 6th lord?
- Its BPHS verse is mostly favourable, more so than for the 6th lord in the 3rd, 8th or 12th. Ch. 34 still calls ownership of the 6th evil, and the planet's strength and second house qualify the reading.
- Is it a Vipareeta yoga?
- No. The Vipareeta conditions concern the 6th, 8th and 12th lords in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 11th is an upachaya, not a dusthana.
- Which Ascendants make one planet lord of both the 6th and 11th?
- Gemini (Mars) and Sagittarius (Venus). The placement is then that planet in its own 11th-house sign.
- How common is it?
- 251 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.4%.
