House lords

The lord of the 6th house placed in the 12th: the harsh BPHS verse, the Uttara Kalamrita rule that names this placement as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, the planet for each Ascendant and a chart where all three dusthana lords meet.

In short

The 6th lord in the 12th house puts the ruler of enemies and illness in the house of loss and expenditure, one dusthana lord in another. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 72 reads it harshly, as spending on vices and a hostile, cruel temper. The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the same placement as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and this app's engine flags Harsha Yoga.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 12th sign, it takes the 6th's matters - enemies, illness, debt, dispute - into the house of expenditure, loss, distant lands, confinement, sleep and release.

Counted from the 6th, the 12th is the 7th house: the lord sits directly opposite its own sign and looks back at it by its 7th aspect. Counted from the Ascendant, both houses are dusthanas. Those two facts give this placement its double reputation. Parashara's verse is among the harshest of the Ari series; a rule preserved in a later text names this exact placement as a source of fame and wealth.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and an upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, service.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is the third dusthana: loss, expense, foreign residence, isolation and liberation. BPHS Ch. 34 says the results of its lord depend on association.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 72

Sl. 72 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Vyaya Bhava, the native will always spend on vices, be hostile to learned people and will torture living beings." All three clauses are adverse.

Briefly, and as the text's statement rather than this page's: the verse joins the 12th's expenditure with the 6th's hostility and produces spending on vice and enmity toward the learned and toward living beings. This app reports it because it is the classical reading, and it is no description of any reader.

The reverse is in the same register. Sl. 138, Vyaya's lord in Ari, says the native "will incur enmity with his own men, be given to anger, be sinful, miserable" and will pursue others' wives. In BPHS's account the 6th-12th link is adverse whichever lord moves.

The Vipareeta rule names this placement

The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita. Among its conditions is the "lord of 6th being placed in the 8th or 12th", and also the three dusthana lords "being connected in any way" by exchange, aspect or conjunction, "free from such relation with other planets"; the result it gives is a person who becomes "an emperor over other kings and blessed with fame and wealth". That is Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and the 6th lord in the 12th is in it by name. This app's engine flags the placement as Harsha Yoga every time, without testing the freedom-from-relation condition.

The corpus therefore holds a harsh reading (BPHS Sl. 72) and a strongly favourable conditional one (Uttara Kalamrita) for the same placement, from two books that do not refer to each other. The Bhrigu Sutras add a third principle, in their sutras on the Sun in the 6th: if the 6th lord is weak "there will be destruction of enemies". Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 add strength and the second lordship. The Saravali has no verse here.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 6th lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

This is a weak placement by sign. Five rows are enemy signs, six neutral, and Aries rising puts Mercury, lord of the 3rd and 6th, debilitated in Pisces. No row is friendly, own or exalted. Readers who follow the Bhrigu Sutras principle would see that weakness as the favourable side for a 6th lord; readers who follow Sl. 145-148 would apply less of Sl. 72. Either way, the table's weakness and the verse's harshness are less at odds than they look.

Two rows need a further verse. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord, so the Ascendant's ruler is in the 12th, and Ch. 24 Sl. 12 applies too: when Lagn's lord is in Vyaya "devoid of benefic Drishti and/or Yuti", the native lacks physical happiness, spends unfruitfully and is given to anger. That verse is conditional on benefic contact, so a benefic joining or aspecting the planet changes it - which in turn breaks the Uttara Kalamrita requirement that the dusthana lords stand free of other planets. In those rows, the contact that lifts Sl. 12 and the isolation the Vipareeta verse asks for cannot both hold.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label. Read both ways, as above.
  • The other house: a trine or the Lagna (Taurus and Scorpio: the 1st; Cancer and Capricorn: the 9th; Virgo: the 5th) is a good lordship falling into the 12th along with the 6th, and its own verse for the 12th applies.
  • Association: the Uttara Kalamrita condition asks for freedom from relation with planets other than the dusthana lords. The 12th is aspected from the 6th, and specially by Mars (9th, 5th), Jupiter (8th, 4th) and Saturn (10th, 3rd) - see drishti.

One more principle from the same Bhrigu Sutras commentary points the other way: discussing Saturn in the 4th, the commentator says a 6th, 8th or 12th lord associated with a planet spoils that planet's significations and those of the house. The commentary thus holds both a favourable reading of dusthana lords together and an unfavourable reading of a dusthana lord with any other planet, and does not reconcile them.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Mercury in Sagittarius

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; it can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Capricorn 17.6.

  • With Capricorn rising, Mercury rules the 6th (Gemini) and the 9th (Virgo). The 12th is Sagittarius.
  • Mercury is in Sagittarius at 4.27 degrees, Mula pada 2, in the 12th. The engine marks it Enemy sign.
  • The Sun (Sagittarius 26.18), lord of the 8th, and Jupiter (Sagittarius 29.96, Own sign, combust), lord of the 3rd and 12th, share the 12th.
  • So all three dusthana lords - 6th, 8th and 12th - are together in the 12th, and no other planet joins them.

This is close to the textbook case of the Uttara Kalamrita verse: the three dusthana lords "connected" by conjunction, in a dusthana, without other planets in the house. The engine's yoga detector reports all three yogas at once - Harsha for Mercury, Sarala for the Sun, Vimala for Jupiter. Against that sit BPHS Sl. 72 for Mercury, and Sl. 108 for Mercury's 9th lordship (Dharm's lord in Vyaya: loss of fortune, spending on auspicious acts). Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call Mercury auspicious for Makar Lagn, and the Mercury here is in an enemy sign. None of the sources gives arithmetic for combining all this; each is reported as its own. See also Mercury in the 12th house.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 12th house in 243, or 8.1%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 6th (Sl. 138), is also a Vipareeta condition (Vimala Yoga in the engine); together the two lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana), which the Uttara Kalamrita verse lists as well. The other Harsha placements are the 6th lord in the 6th and in the 8th. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 11th (Sl. 71) turns enemies into gains; one house on, the cycle returns to the 6th lord in the 1st.

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Check the birth chart for the 6th lord in the 12th sign; list every planet with it.
  3. Confirm Harsha Yoga in the yoga calculator, then ask whether only dusthana lords are involved, as the classical condition requires.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 12th

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 12th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 72 is adverse: spending on vices, hostility to the learned, cruelty to living beings. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength, not a description of anyone.
Is it a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
The Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 6th lord in the 12th as a condition, provided the dusthana lords are free of relation with other planets. This app flags it as Harsha Yoga without testing that condition.
Why do BPHS and the Vipareeta rule disagree?
They come from different books, and neither refers to the other. The corpus offers no reconciliation, so this page presents both.
Is a weak 6th lord in the 12th better?
The Bhrigu Sutras say a weak 6th lord gives destruction of enemies. BPHS's strength scale says a weak lord gives less of its verse. Both point the same way here, since Sl. 72 is adverse.
How common is it?
243 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.1%.
