House lords

The lord of the 12th house placed in the 6th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 138, the Vimala Yoga the engine reports for every Ascendant, the Raj Yoga rules of Ch. 39 for weak dusthana lords, and an engine-computed Virgo chart.

In short

The 12th lord in the 6th house is the ruler of expenditure and loss placed in the house of rivals, illness and debt. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 138 is one of the chapter's harshest verses, reported here as the text's claim and not a forecast. The same placement is always a Vimala Yoga in this app, a Vipareeta rule from a different source that reads a dusthana lord in a dusthana as an inversion.

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 6th house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of enemies, illness, debts and service. One dusthana lord sits in another.

The 12th and 6th are opposite signs: counted from the 12th, the 6th is the 7th, and every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, so a 12th lord in the 6th always aspects its own house. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) governs enemies, illness, debts and service.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 6th

Ch. 24 Sl. 138: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Ari Bhava, the native "will incur enmity with his own men", be given to anger, and the verse continues with stronger moral language and a clause about others' spouses. The bphs-alt text agrees. This page summarises rather than repeats it: it is one of the harshest verses in the chapter, it is the text's claim about a configuration, and this app does not apply it to any person.

BPHS itself qualifies it in Sl. 145-148: results come in full, half or a quarter by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling. For this placement that scale runs in an unusual direction, because the table below has no strong rows at all.

Two readings of a dusthana lord in a dusthana

BPHS reads this placement through Sl. 138. This app also reports Vimala Yoga for it, for every Ascendant, because its Vipareeta rule fires whenever the 12th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The engine cites the modern case book Advanced Predictive Astrology for that rule, which reads the "double affliction" as an inversion into resilience. The two readings come from different sources and point different ways; this page reports both and does not reconcile them.

BPHS has its own route to a similar idea. Ch. 39 Sl. 20 says that if the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th are in fall, inimical signs or combustion, while the Lagna lord in its own or exaltation sign aspects the Lagna, a Raj Yoga is formed; Sl. 28 says even one of those lords, debilitated and aspecting the Lagna, forms one. From the 6th, the 7th aspect falls on the 12th, not the Lagna, so Sl. 28's aspect condition is met only by a Mars 12th lord (its 8th aspect from the 6th lands on the 1st). The engine tests neither verse. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 12th lord in the 6th.

No row is exalted, own sign or friendly. Libra rising puts Mercury, owner of the 9th and 12th, debilitated in Pisces. Five rows are enemy signs: Jupiter in Virgo (Aries rising), the Sun in Aquarius (Virgo), Jupiter in Gemini (Capricorn), Saturn in Cancer (Aquarius) and Saturn in Leo (Pisces). The other six are neutral. By sign, this is the weakest table in the 12th lord's set, and in BPHS's terms that is the shape Ch. 39 Sl. 20 asks for: a weak 12th lord.

Row by row

The rows with a trine lordship deserve note. For Aries rising Jupiter owns the 9th and 12th and is in Virgo, an enemy sign; for Libra rising Mercury owns the same pair and is debilitated. In both, the 9th lord's verse for the 6th (Sl. 102: meagre prosperity, trouble from enemies) applies too, weakened in the same way. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 12th lord also owns the 5th (Venus in Scorpio, Mars in Taurus, both neutral), and Sl. 54, the 5th lord in the 6th, applies alongside. For Aquarius rising the 12th lord is the Lagna lord, Saturn, in Cancer, an enemy sign: the person's own ruler weak in the 6th.

Sagittarius rising is the one row where Ch. 39 Sl. 28's aspect condition can be met by this placement: Mars owns the 5th and 12th, stands in Taurus in the 6th, and its 8th aspect falls on the Lagna. Sl. 28 also needs Mars debilitated, and Taurus is neutral for it, so even there the rule is not satisfied by sign. For Libra rising Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, but Mercury has no aspect on the Lagna from the 6th. So BPHS's weak-dusthana-lord Raj Yoga, in its single-planet form, does not complete from this placement for any Ascendant on sign alone; Sl. 20, which depends on the Lagna lord, remains possible in individual charts.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 138 is unfavourable and the table is weak, Sl. 145-148 would give the verse at half strength or less across the board. Dignity, combustion and company then decide how far Ch. 39 Sl. 20 or the engine's Vimala reading come into play.

From the 6th, every graha aspects the 12th. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 9th and the 1st; a Jupiter the 10th and the 2nd; a Saturn the 8th and the 3rd.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 6th lord in the 12th (Sl. 72), is also harsh in BPHS, and is the Harsha Yoga case in this app. Both together are a parivartana between two dusthanas, which is also both Vipareeta yogas at once. The 12th lord in the 5th (Sl. 137) concerns children and learning and the 12th lord in the 7th (Sl. 139) the spouse.

Worked example: Virgo rising, the Sun in Aquarius

The engine's deterministic search found: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Virgo 28.04. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Virgo rising the 12th house is Leo and the 12th lord is the Sun, which owns no other sign.
  • The 6th house is Aquarius. The Sun is there at 12.36 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 2, "Neutral".
  • Mercury, the Lagna lord and 10th lord, shares Aquarius at 16.94, combust.
  • The engine reports Vimala Yoga (the 12th lord in the 6th) and Malavya Yoga (Venus exalted in the 7th).

The Sun here is the table's enemy-sign row for Virgo, lifted to neutral by the chart. Ch. 39 Sl. 20 asks for the 12th lord in fall, an inimical sign or combustion; a neutral Sun meets none of those, and the Sun cannot itself be combust. The Lagna lord Mercury, joined with the 12th lord in the 6th, is the condition Ch. 42 Sl. 6 names in its penury rules, which this app reports as the text's rule only. The engine's Vimala Yoga, by contrast, fires here without conditions on dignity.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 6th house in 247, or 8.2%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 12th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the sixth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity, combustion and second lordship.
  4. Run the yoga calculator, which will report Vimala Yoga.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 6th

What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 6th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 138 is one of the chapter's harshest verses: enmity with one's own people, anger and stronger moral charges. This app reports it as the text's claim and does not apply it to anyone.
Is it Vimala Yoga?
Yes, in this app, for every Ascendant: the engine reports Vimala Yoga whenever the 12th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The rule comes from Advanced Predictive Astrology, not BPHS.
Does BPHS have a similar idea?
Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 count the 6th, 8th and 12th lords in fall, inimical signs or combustion as part of a Raj Yoga, under conditions on the Lagna lord or the Lagna. The engine does not test those verses.
Why is the table so weak?
No Ascendant puts the 12th lord in a friendly, own or exaltation sign in the 6th; five rows are enemy signs and one is debilitated. Real charts can lift a row through temporary friendship.
How common is it?
It occurred in 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
