In short
The 12th lord in the 7th house is the ruler of expenditure placed in the angle of marriage and partnership. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 139 reads it as expense on account of the spouse, little conjugal happiness and a lack of learning and strength, the text's claim and not a forecast. For Taurus, Scorpio and Capricorn rising the placement alone forms a Panchamahapurusha yoga.
What the placement means
"The 12th lord in the 7th house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of the spouse, partners and dealings with others.
The 7th is a Kendra. Counted from the 12th, it is the 8th. From the 7th every graha aspects the Lagna, so the 12th lord here always looks at the person. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) governs marriage, partners and others.
What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 7th
Ch. 24 Sl. 139: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Yuvati Bhava, the native "will incur expenditure on account of his wife", will not enjoy conjugal bliss, and will be bereft of learning and strength. The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse joins the 12th house's spending to the 7th house's spouse and adds two general losses. Like the chapter it addresses a male native; this page reports it in neutral terms as the text's claim and does not apply it to any marriage.
Sl. 145-148 qualify it: full, half or a quarter by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling.
When the 12th lord also owns the 7th
For Taurus rising Mars owns the 7th (Scorpio) and the 12th (Aries); for Scorpio rising Venus owns the 7th (Taurus) and the 12th (Libra). In both rows the 12th lord in the 7th is the 7th lord at home. BPHS's verse for the 7th lord in the 7th, Sl. 79, reads as happiness through the spouse, courage, skill and intelligence, with windy complaints. That verse and Sl. 139 apply to the same planet and largely contradict each other on the marriage; Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel. For the spouse BPHS Ch. 7 also sends the reader to the Navamsa, which is the usual cross-check.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 leave the 12th lord to its associations and add the Kendra-lordship caution, relevant where the 12th lord also owns an angle (the 7th for Taurus and Scorpio rising, the 1st for Aquarius rising). Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).
| Ascendant | 12th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Libra | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Taurus | Mars | Scorpio | Own sign | 7th |
| Gemini | Venus | Sagittarius | Neutral | 5th |
| Cancer | Mercury | Capricorn | Neutral | 3rd |
| Leo | Moon | Aquarius | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Virgo | Sun | Pisces | Friendly sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Libra | Mercury | Aries | Neutral | 9th |
| Scorpio | Venus | Taurus | Own sign | 7th |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Gemini | Enemy sign | 5th |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | Cancer | Exalted | 3rd |
| Aquarius | Saturn | Leo | Enemy sign | 1st |
| Pisces | Saturn | Virgo | Friendly sign | 11th |
Three rows are strong: Taurus rising (Mars in its own Scorpio), Scorpio rising (Venus in its own Taurus) and Capricorn rising (Jupiter, owner of the 3rd and 12th, exalted in Cancer). No row is debilitated. Three are enemy signs: Jupiter in Libra (Aries rising, where Jupiter also owns the 9th), Mars in Gemini (Sagittarius) and Saturn in Leo (Aquarius, where Saturn is the Lagna lord). Virgo and Pisces rising give friendly signs.
Three Panchamahapurusha yogas
Because the 7th is a Kendra, the three strong rows each form a Panchamahapurusha yoga in this app's sense: Ruchaka Yoga for Taurus rising (Mars), Malavya Yoga for Scorpio rising (Venus) and Hamsa Yoga for Capricorn rising (Jupiter). The yoga comes from sign and house, not lordship, so the engine reports it even though the planet is the 12th lord. BPHS's scale works the other way for Sl. 139: a strong 12th lord gives an unfavourable verse more fully, unless a second lordship offsets it, as the 7th lordship does for Taurus and Scorpio.
The trine and Lagna rows
For Aries rising Jupiter owns the 9th and 12th and stands in Libra, an enemy sign; the 9th lord's verse for the 7th (Sl. 103: happiness after marriage, virtue, fame) then runs directly against Sl. 139, and both come through at a reduced share. For Libra rising Mercury holds the same two lordships in Aries, neutral. For Gemini rising Venus owns the 5th and 12th, in Sagittarius, neutral, and for Sagittarius rising Mars owns them, in Gemini, an enemy sign; Sl. 55, the 5th lord in the 7th (honourable, very religious, happy with children, helpful), applies alongside. For Aquarius rising Saturn is the Lagna lord as well, in Leo, an enemy sign: the person's own ruler weak in the angle of marriage. In each of these rows the second lordship's verse is favourable, and Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel.
Strength changes the reading
After dignity, the second lordship decides. For Aries and Libra rising it is the 9th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 5th; for Cancer and Capricorn, the 3rd. Combustion and company come next; in the worked example the 12th lord is combust and joined by two other planets.
From the 7th, every graha aspects the 1st. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 10th and the 2nd; a Jupiter the 11th and the 3rd, so for Capricorn rising an exalted Jupiter in the 7th looks at the Lagna, the 11th and its own other house, the 3rd; a Saturn the 9th and the 4th.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 12th (Sl. 84), reads as penury, miserliness, a livelihood connected with clothes and a spendthrift spouse, the text's claims. The two verses share the theme of money spent through the spouse. Together they are a parivartana between an angle and a dusthana. The 12th lord in the 6th (Sl. 138) is harsh and the 12th lord in the 8th (Sl. 140) unexpectedly favourable.
Worked example: Cancer rising, Mercury in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search found: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 4.31. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Cancer rising the 12th house is Gemini and the 12th lord is Mercury, which also owns Virgo, the 3rd.
- The 7th house is Capricorn. Mercury is there at 14.66 degrees, Shravana pada 2, "Friendly sign", and combust.
- The Sun (23.96, the 2nd lord) and Jupiter (6.33, debilitated, the 6th and 9th lord) share Capricorn.
- Mars (the 5th and 10th lord) and an exalted Venus (the 4th and 11th lord) are together in Pisces, the 9th; the engine reports a Kendra-Kona link for them.
Mercury here is a friendly-sign but combust 12th lord with the 3rd as its second house, both lordships Ch. 34 treats warily, so on Sl. 145-148's scale Sl. 139 comes through at a middle strength. The 7th also holds the 2nd lord and a debilitated 9th lord, and the 7th lord itself, Saturn, is in Scorpio, the 5th, an enemy sign. BPHS would read the marriage from all of these and from the Navamsa, not from Sl. 139 alone; this app reads none of it as a forecast.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 7th house in 251, or 8.4%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 139: expense on account of the spouse, little conjugal happiness, and a lack of learning and strength. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength. It is the text's claim, not a forecast.
- Does it mean an unhappy marriage?
- The verse says so as a classical claim. This app does not predict marriages from a placement, and BPHS itself reads the spouse from the Navamsa as well.
- When does it form a Panchamahapurusha yoga?
- For Taurus (Mars in Scorpio: Ruchaka), Scorpio (Venus in Taurus: Malavya) and Capricorn rising (Jupiter exalted in Cancer: Hamsa).
- What about Taurus and Scorpio rising?
- The 12th lord also owns the 7th and sits at home, so BPHS Sl. 79 (the 7th lord in the 7th: happiness through the spouse) applies too and largely cancels Sl. 139 under Sl. 145-148.
- What does the reverse placement say?
- The 7th lord in the 12th (Sl. 84): penury, miserliness, a livelihood connected with clothes and a spendthrift spouse, reported as the text's claims.
- Does the 12th lord in the 7th aspect the Ascendant?
- Yes. The 1st is the 7th house from the 7th, and every graha aspects its 7th. A Jupiter 12th lord there also aspects the 11th and 3rd, a Mars the 10th and 2nd, a Saturn the 9th and 4th.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 251 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.4%.
