In short
The 12th lord in the 5th house is the ruler of expenditure placed in the trine of children, intelligence and learning. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 137 reads it as lacking sons and learning, spending and visiting shrines in order to have a son, the text's claim and not a forecast. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 12th lord also owns the 5th and is in its own sign there.
What the placement means
"The 12th lord in the 5th house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of children, intelligence, learning, devotion and the merit carried from past lives. The house of outflow carries its affairs into a trine.
The 5th is a trikona, which Ch. 34 calls "specially for wealth" together with the 9th. Counted from the 12th, the 5th is the 6th. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) governs children, intellect, learning and devotion.
What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 5th
Ch. 24 Sl. 137: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Putr Bhava, the native "will be bereft of sons and learning", and "will spend, as well as visit shrines in order to beget a son". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse takes the 5th house's two chief topics, children and learning, and applies the 12th house's loss to both, then adds spending, the 12th's own matter, directed at the 5th's concern. The pilgrimage clause is the text's own; this app reports it and prescribes nothing.
This is the text's claim about a configuration, and the chapter qualifies it at once. Sl. 145-148 say results come in full, half or a quarter by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary results cancelling. That second rule is decisive for two Ascendants, as the table shows.
When the 12th lord also owns the 5th
For Gemini rising Venus owns the 5th (Libra) and the 12th (Taurus); for Sagittarius rising Mars owns the 5th (Aries) and the 12th (Scorpio). In both, the 12th lord in the 5th is the 5th lord at home in its own sign. BPHS's verse for the 5th lord in the 5th, Sl. 53, says the native will have progeny if the lord is related to a benefic, will not if a malefic is related to it, and will in any case be virtuous and dear to friends. So for those two Ascendants Sl. 53 and Sl. 137 both apply to one planet, partly contrary, and Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel. The verse that remains is shaped by what joins or aspects the planet, exactly as Sl. 53 says.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 leave the 12th lord to its associations, which points the same way. Ch. 42 Sl. 7 is a different rule (the 5th lord in the 6th and the 9th lord in the 12th, aspected by marakas) and is not about this placement. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 12th lord in the 5th.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).
| Ascendant | 12th lord | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 9th |
| Taurus | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 7th |
| Gemini | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 5th |
| Cancer | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 3rd |
| Leo | Moon | Sagittarius | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Virgo | Sun | Capricorn | Enemy sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Libra | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 9th |
| Scorpio | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 7th |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 5th |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 3rd |
| Aquarius | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 1st |
| Pisces | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 11th |
Gemini and Sagittarius rising are the own-sign rows (Venus in Libra, Mars in Aries, moolatrikona by degree). Scorpio rising puts Venus, owner of the 7th and 12th, exalted in Pisces. No row is debilitated. Four are enemy signs: Mars in Virgo (Taurus rising), the Sun in Capricorn (Virgo), Jupiter in Taurus (Capricorn) and Saturn in Cancer (Pisces). Aries (Jupiter in Leo) and Aquarius (Saturn in Gemini) give friendly signs.
Row by row
Aries rising pairs the 12th lordship with the 9th: Jupiter in Leo, a friendly sign, so the 9th lord's verse for the 5th (Sl. 101: children, prosperity, learning) and Sl. 137 apply together and largely contradict each other. Libra rising does the same with Mercury in Aquarius, neutral. Aquarius rising brings the Lagna lord into the 5th with the 12th lordship: Saturn in Gemini, friendly. Taurus and Scorpio rising bring the 7th: Mars in Virgo (enemy) and Venus in Pisces (exalted). For Leo and Virgo rising the 12th lord is a luminary, the Moon or the Sun, so Sl. 137 stands alone.
Scorpio rising is the instructive strong row. Venus there owns the 7th and the 12th and is exalted in Pisces, the 5th. By Sl. 145-148 an exalted planet gives both its lordships' results fully: Sl. 137 for the 12th lord in the 5th, and Sl. 77 for the 7th lord in the 5th, which reads as honourable, virtuous, always delighted and endowed with all kinds of wealth. The two verses meet on the native's happiness and diverge on children and learning; the chapter's rule is that contrary results cancel and varied ones both come to pass. It is one of the clearest cases in the 12th lord's set where a strong planet carries an unfavourable verse and a favourable one at the same time.
Counted from the 12th, the 5th is the 6th, the house of obstacles relative to loss. BPHS does not use that derived count in Sl. 137, and this page does not either.
Strength changes the reading
Because Sl. 137 is unfavourable, a strong 12th lord gives it more fully, unless its other lordship cancels it. Dignity, combustion and company decide, and for a 12th lord company matters most.
From the 5th, every graha aspects the 11th. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 8th and the 12th, so a Mars 12th lord in the 5th looks back at its own house; a Jupiter the 9th and the 1st; a Saturn the 7th and the 2nd.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 5th lord in the 12th (Sl. 60), reads as lacking happiness from one's own children and having an adopted or purchased son. The two verses are close in subject. Together they are a parivartana between a trine and a dusthana. The 12th lord in the 4th (Sl. 136) concerns home and land and the 12th lord in the 6th (Sl. 138) is one of the set's harsh verses.
Worked example: Leo rising, the Moon in Sagittarius
The engine's deterministic search found: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Leo rising the 12th house is Cancer and the 12th lord is the Moon, which owns no other sign.
- The 5th house is Sagittarius. The Moon is there at 13.58 degrees, Purva Ashadha pada 1, "Friendly sign"; not combust.
- Jupiter, the 5th lord (and 8th lord), is debilitated in Capricorn, the 6th; the engine reports Sarala Yoga through it.
- Mars (the 4th and 9th lord) and Venus (exalted; the 3rd and 10th lord) are together in Pisces, the 8th; the engine reports a Kendra-Kona link for them.
This is the luminary row: the Moon owns only the 12th, so Sl. 137 applies without a second lordship to vary it, scaled by a friendly-sign Moon to a middle strength. The Moon's 7th aspect falls on the 11th, Gemini, which is empty. The 5th house's own lord is the more telling detail: Jupiter is debilitated in the 6th, so both the house's owner and its occupant come from the difficult side of the chart. BPHS would read the 5th from all of those, not from Sl. 137 alone.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 5th house in 259, or 8.6%. That is a count of moments, not people.
Checking it in your own chart
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 12th lord from the table.
- Check whether it stands in the fifth sign in your birth chart.
- Note its second lordship; for Gemini and Sagittarius rising it is the 5th lord at home.
- Note the benefics or malefics joined with it, which BPHS Sl. 53 makes decisive in the own-sign rows.
Questions about the 12th lord in the 5th
- What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 5th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 137: lacking sons and learning, spending and visiting shrines to have a son. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength and the other lordship. It is the text's claim, not a forecast.
- Does it mean difficulty having children?
- The verse says so as a classical claim. This app does not predict children from a placement and prescribes no remedies.
- What about Gemini and Sagittarius rising?
- There the 12th lord also owns the 5th and sits at home in its own sign, so BPHS Sl. 53 (the 5th lord in the 5th) applies too, and its result turns on benefic or malefic company.
- Which Ascendant gives an exalted 12th lord here?
- Scorpio rising: Venus, owner of the 7th and 12th, exalted in Pisces.
- What does the reverse placement say?
- The 5th lord in the 12th (Sl. 60): lacking happiness from one's own children, with an adopted or purchased son.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 259 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6%.
