House lords

The lord of the 5th house placed in the 12th: the BPHS verse, how the second lordship can turn it into a Vipareeta yoga, the planet for each Ascendant and an engine-computed chart.

In short

The 5th lord in the 12th house places the ruler of children and intelligence in the house of loss, expenditure and withdrawal. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 60 is brief and restrictive: little happiness from one's own children, and an adopted child. For several Ascendants the same planet also rules a dusthana, which brings the Vipareeta rules into the reading.

What the placement means

The 5th house lord is the planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant. When it stands in the 12th sign, it carries the 5th's business - children, learning, judgement, merit - into the house of expenditure, loss, distant places, sleep and withdrawal from the world.

Counted from the 5th, the 12th is the 8th house - the dusthana counted from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, it is also a dusthana. The lord is therefore in a difficult house from both reference points, which few placements of a trine lord share.

The two houses involved

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona read for children, intellect and devotion.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is a dusthana: loss, expense, foreign residence, confinement and liberation are among its significations. Ch. 34 says the results of its lord "depend on their association" - the 12th is treated as neutral in itself, coloured by what joins it.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 60

Sl. 60 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Vyaya Bhava, the native will be bereft of happiness from his own sons, will have an adopted, or purchased son." Like Sl. 54 for the 6th, it speaks only of children and closes on adoption.

The verse is the text's statement about a combination, not a forecast about anyone, and this app does not predict children. Read structurally, it applies the 12th's meaning - loss - to the 5th's chief signification. It is also restrained compared with what it might have said: the verse limits happiness from one's own children and names a substitute, rather than denying children altogether.

The reverse placement is harsher on the same theme. Sl. 137, Vyaya's lord in Putr, says the native "will be bereft of sons and learning" and will spend, and visit shrines, in order to have a son. Taken together, BPHS reads the 5th-12th link as a strain on children whichever lord moves.

When the 5th lord also rules a dusthana

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 say a planet with two houses gives both sets of results, and contrary results cancel. The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita: the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th and the 8th lord in the 12th or 6th are conditions of Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and the commentator extends the idea by analogy to the 12th lord in the 12th. This app's engine flags all three dusthana lords in any dusthana: Harsha (6th lord), Sarala (8th lord) and Vimala Yoga (12th lord). For Virgo rising the 5th lord also rules the 6th; for Leo and Aquarius, the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 12th itself. In all five, the 5th lord in the 12th is also one of those yogas.

The Saravali has no verse on this placement.

The 5th lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Three rows put the lord in great dignity. Leo rising: Jupiter, lord of the 5th and 8th, is exalted in Cancer - and as 8th lord in the 12th it is also Sarala Yoga in the engine. Gemini rising: Venus, lord of the 5th and 12th, is in its own sign Taurus, its own 12th house. Sagittarius rising: Mars, lord of the 5th and 12th, is in its own sign Scorpio, likewise. Cancer, Virgo and Scorpio rising put the lord in enemy signs.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share - though, read literally, more strength gives more of the verse the planet carries.
  • Second lordship: the vipareeta rows above; Cancer and Capricorn rising put a 5th-and-10th yogakaraka in the 12th; Libra puts the 4th-and-5th yogakaraka there.
  • Association: Ch. 34 makes the 12th lord's results depend on association, and the 12th receives the 7th aspect from the 6th and special aspects from Mars (9th, 5th), Jupiter (8th, 4th) and Saturn (10th, 3rd) - see drishti.

Combustion matters often in this house. The Sun is frequently in the 12th or nearby, and planets close to it are flagged combust by the engine. When the 5th lord is itself the Sun (Aries rising), the question reverses: its companions may be the ones weakened.

One more passage from the Bhrigu Sutras commentary is relevant to company in this house. Discussing Saturn in the 4th, the commentator states a general principle: the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, if associated with a planet, spoils not only that planet's significations but also those of the house where the two sit. That is a commentator's rule, not Parashara's, and BPHS Ch. 24 does not state it. It is worth knowing because the 12th often holds the 6th or 8th lord alongside the 5th lord, and the rule points the other way from the vipareeta reading: there, two dusthana factors combine favourably; here, a dusthana lord harms its companion. The texts in this corpus do not reconcile the two, and this page does not either.

Worked example: Aries rising, the Sun in Pisces

This chart is from the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 2 April 1985, 08:10 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Aries 26.47.

  • With Aries rising, the 5th house is Leo, ruled by the Sun, which rules nothing else. The 12th is Pisces.
  • The Sun is in Pisces at 18.66 degrees, Revati pada 1, in the 12th. The engine marks it Friendly sign.
  • Mercury (Pisces 21.28, Debilitated, combust, retrograde; lord of the 3rd and 6th) and Venus (Pisces 21.58, Exalted, combust, retrograde; lord of the 2nd and 7th) share the 12th.
  • The 12th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 10th, Debilitated.

Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 name Jupiter and the Sun as auspicious for Mesh Lagn, so the planet carrying Sl. 60 is one the text favours, at friendly strength. Its company cuts both ways: an exalted Venus (which the same verse calls a "direct killer" for Aries rising, a maraka term) and a debilitated Mercury, both combust because the Sun is beside them. The engine's yoga detector reports Harsha Yoga for Mercury (the 6th lord in the 12th), Ruchaka Yoga for Mars in the 1st, and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus and the Sun, an angle lord and a trine lord together. None of that removes Sl. 60; Sl. 145-148 say these strands are weighed together. See Sun in the 12th house for the planet-level reading.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 12th house in 271, or 9% - a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 5th (Sl. 137), is summarised above; together they are an exchange (parivartana) between a trine lord and a dusthana lord. One house back, the 5th lord in the 11th (Sl. 59) is among the warmest verses; one house on, the cycle returns to the 5th lord in the 1st (Sl. 49). The other dusthana placements, the 6th and the 8th, read similarly.

  1. Find the Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Check the birth chart for the 5th lord in the 12th sign, with its dignity and other house.
  3. If that other house is a dusthana, see whether the yoga calculator reports Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga for it.

Questions about the 5th lord in the 12th

What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 12th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 60: the native will lack happiness from their own sons and will have an adopted or purchased son. It is the text's claim about a combination, scaled by strength; this app does not predict children.
Can it form Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
Only through the planet's other lordship. When the 5th lord also rules the 6th (Virgo), 8th (Leo, Aquarius) or 12th (Gemini, Sagittarius), it is a dusthana lord in a dusthana, and the engine flags Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest lord here?
Leo: Jupiter exalted in Cancer. Gemini and Sagittarius put the lord in its own sign, which is also its own 12th house.
Is the 12th always bad for a trine lord?
Sl. 60 is restrictive, but BPHS Ch. 34 says the 12th lord's results depend on association, and Sl. 145-148 weigh both lordships. The verse is one input, not a verdict.
How common is it?
271 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9%.
