In short

The 5th lord in the 11th house carries the ruler of intelligence and children into the house of gains and the fulfilment of wishes, directly opposite its own sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 59 is warm: learned and well liked, an author of treatises, very skilful, with many children and wealth. By sign, though, the lord is rarely strong here.

What the placement means

The planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant is the 5th house lord. Here it stands in the 11th sign, the house of income, elder siblings, friends, networks and the realisation of hopes. The 5th's significations - intellect, learning, children - are delivered into the house of what one gains.

Counted from the 5th, the 11th is the 7th house: the lord sits exactly opposite its own sign and casts its 7th aspect straight back onto it. That geometry is peculiar to this placement among the twelve. Every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself, so a 5th lord in the 11th is always also looking at the 5th.

The two houses involved

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona - children, judgement, learning, merit. Its page has the full list.

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is an upachaya and the house of gains. BPHS Ch. 34 lists the owner of the 11th among those that "give evil effects" by lordship, which is a judgement on owning the 11th; the 5th lord does not acquire that by sitting there.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 59

Sl. 59 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Labh Bhava, the native will be learned, dear to people, be an author of treatises, be very skilful and be endowed with many sons and wealth." It is wholly favourable and unconditional.

Of all the Putr verses, Sl. 59 is the most complete statement of the 5th house's own goods. Learning, authorship and skill are the 5th's intellect; many sons are its children; wealth and popularity ("dear to people") are what the 11th adds - the house of gains and of friends and networks. Only Sl. 57 (the 5th lord in the 9th) shares the phrase about authoring treatises; between them, the two verses tie writing to the 5th lord reaching fortune and gain.

The reverse placement, Sl. 125, Labh's lord in Putr, is gentler and shorter: the native "will be happy, educated and virtuous", and religious. Both directions agree on education; only Sl. 59 adds wealth and many children - the 11th's gains arriving through the 5th's own lord.

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 qualify it in the usual way: the planet gives full, half or a quarter of the effect according to strength, and a planet ruling a second house gives that house's results too, with contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus have no verse on the 5th lord in the 11th.

The dignity column is the striking thing about this placement. No row is exalted, in its own sign or even friendly by sign alone: six are enemy signs, five neutral, and Taurus rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces. Part of the reason is that the 11th sign is always opposite the lord's own 5th sign, and the opposite sign is ruled by a planet that is not the lord itself; part is simply how the engine's natural-friendship table falls for each pair. So Sl. 59 is a generous verse that, by Sl. 145-148, is seldom delivered at full strength on sign alone. In a real chart the temporary relationship can lift a planet one tier, as the worked example shows.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label, read in the chart (where temporary friendship counts), not just the table.
  • Second lordship: Cancer and Capricorn rising make the lord a yogakaraka (5th and 10th); Libra makes it the 4th-and-5th yogakaraka. Leo and Aquarius add the 8th, Virgo the 6th, Gemini and Sagittarius the 12th.
  • Association: the 11th receives the 7th aspect from the 5th, and special aspects from Mars (8th, 4th), Jupiter (7th, 3rd) and Saturn (9th, 2nd) - see drishti.

The house helps in its own way. The 11th is an upachaya, a class of house where the texts expect planets to grow in effect over time, and it is the house of gain. Neither fact appears in Sl. 59 itself, so this page records them as background rather than as a modification of the verse.

The planet's natural class sits on top of all this. By Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, Jupiter (Leo, Scorpio rising) and Venus (Gemini, Capricorn) are benefics; the Sun (Aries), Mars (Cancer, Sagittarius) and Saturn (Virgo, Libra) are malefics; Mercury (Taurus, Aquarius) is neutral, colouring itself by company; the Moon (Pisces) is "mediocre in benefice", stronger when full. Ch. 34 Sl. 14 adds that a malefic becomes auspicious by owning an angle only when it also owns a trine - the case of Mars for Cancer rising and Saturn for Libra rising, both of which carry Sl. 59 here with that double ownership. The text does not rank one natural class above another for this specific verse.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Mars in Taurus

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 20 April 1985, 13:24 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Cancer 26.31.

  • With Cancer rising, the 5th house is Scorpio and the 10th is Aries; Mars rules both, which makes it the yogakaraka for this Ascendant. The 11th is Taurus.
  • Mars is in Taurus at 2.14 degrees, Krittika pada 2, in the 11th. By sign alone it is neutral; in this chart the engine marks it Friendly sign. It is not retrograde or combust.
  • Jupiter in the 7th (Capricorn, ruler of the 6th and 9th) and Saturn in the 5th (Scorpio, ruler of the 7th and 8th) both aspect the 11th.
  • The 11th lord, Venus, is exalted in Pisces in the 9th.

Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28 call Mars, Jupiter and the Moon auspicious for Kark Lagn and say Mars "is capable of conferring a full-fledged Yog" - so the planet carrying Sl. 59 here is the one the text values most for this Ascendant. Mars and Saturn also aspect each other across the 5th-11th axis, and the engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga between Saturn (an angle lord, the 7th) and Mars (a trine lord) for that mutual aspect. Mars's own 7th aspect falls on its own 5th-house sign, Scorpio, where Saturn sits. For Mars's planet-level reading, see Mars in the 11th house.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 11th house in 227, or 7.6%. That is a property of the sample's moments, not of people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 11th lord in the 5th (Sl. 125), is quoted above; together they would be an exchange (parivartana). One house back, the 5th lord in the 10th (Sl. 58) is the Raj Yog verse; one house on, the 5th lord in the 12th (Sl. 60) speaks of little happiness from one's own children and an adopted child. The 11th is the last of the bright run before that turn.

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and read the 5th lord off the table.
  2. Check the birth chart for it in the 11th sign, and read the chart's dignity label rather than the table's.
  3. Note its other house and the planets that aspect the 5th-11th axis.

Questions about the 5th lord in the 11th

What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 11th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 59: learned, dear to people, an author of treatises, very skilful, with many sons and wealth. Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength.
Why is the 5th lord rarely strong in the 11th?
Because the 11th sign is opposite the 5th. By sign alone no Ascendant gives the lord a friendly sign or better there; Taurus rising gives Mercury debilitated. A chart's temporary relationships can raise it a tier.
Does the lord aspect its own house from the 11th?
Yes. Every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself, and the 5th is the 7th from the 11th. BPHS Ch. 24 does not comment on this.
Is the 11th a bad house because its owner gives evil effects?
Ch. 34 says owning the 11th gives evil effects. The 5th lord does not own the 11th by sitting in it, and Sl. 59 is wholly favourable.
Does Sl. 59 promise many children or wealth?
No verse is a promise. Sl. 59 lists many sons and wealth among the results the text attaches to the combination, and Sl. 145-148 deliver them in proportion to the lord's strength. This app does not predict children or income.
How common is it?
227 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.6%. That counts moments, not people.
