In short

The 11th lord in the 5th house is the ruler of gains placed in the trine of children, intelligence and learning. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 125 reads it as happy, educated, virtuous and religious. From the 5th the lord always aspects its own 11th house, which is half of a royal-court rule in Ch. 40; by sign, though, this is one of the 11th lord's weakest tables.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 5th house" is the lord of gains, income and elder siblings standing in the house of children, intelligence, learning and devotion. The house of returns carries its affairs into a trine.

The 5th is a trikona and the 11th an upachaya. The two are opposite signs: counted from the 11th, the 5th is the 7th. Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, so a 11th lord in the 5th always aspects its own house. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) governs children, intelligence, learning and devotion; Ch. 34 calls the 5th and 9th "specially for wealth".

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 5th

Ch. 24 Sl. 125: if the lord of Labh is in the Putr Bhava, the native "will be happy, educated and virtuous", and "will be religious and happy". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse repeats "happy" and adds three 5th-house qualities: education, virtue and religion. It does not mention children directly, which is notable for a verse about the house of children; the reverse placement, the 5th lord in the 11th, is the one that names many sons.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter of the result by strength, both lordships read for a planet owning two houses, contrary results cancelling.

The lord looking back at its own house

Ch. 40 Sl. 2, among the yogas for royal association, says that if the 10th and 11th are free of malefic occupation and of malefic aspect, while the 11th is aspected by its own lord, the native "will be a chief in the king's court". The 11th lord in the 5th always supplies the last condition, because its 7th aspect falls on the 11th. Whether the rule is met then depends on the 10th and 11th being free of malefics, which the worked example below tests by hand. The engine does not test Ch. 40 Sl. 2.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the 11th lord the most marked of the evil lordships, while calling the 5th "specially for wealth". The placement therefore puts a lordship the text classes as difficult into a house it classes as favourable, and Ch. 24 reads the outcome favourably. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 11th lord in the 5th.

The 11th lord and the 5th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

This is one of the weakest tables in the 11th lord's set. No row is exalted or in its own sign. Scorpio rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces (Mercury owns the 8th and 11th). Five rows are enemy signs: Saturn in Leo (Aries rising), Jupiter in Virgo (Taurus), the Sun in Aquarius (Libra), Jupiter in Gemini (Aquarius) and Saturn in Cancer (Pisces). The other six are neutral. By sign alone, then, Sl. 125 comes through at half strength or less for every Ascendant.

Why the 5th is hard for the 11th lord

The pattern has a simple source in the table. The 5th sign from any Ascendant is ruled by a planet that is often unfriendly to the planet ruling the 11th sign from it: Saturn (11th lord for Aries and Pisces) lands in the Sun's Leo or the Moon's Cancer; Jupiter (11th lord for Taurus and Aquarius) in Mercury's Virgo or Gemini; the Sun (11th lord for Libra) in Saturn's Aquarius. The natural relationships BPHS assigns between those planets do the rest. A real chart can lift a row by one tier through temporary friendship, so the table is a starting point, not a verdict.

Strength changes the reading

With dignity rarely helping, the second lordship and company decide more. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 11th lord also owns the 4th, an angle; for Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd; for Aries, the 10th. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it owns the 8th, for Gemini and Sagittarius the 6th, for Pisces the 12th. Combustion weakens it further.

Aspects from the 5th: the 7th aspect falls on the 11th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 8th and 12th; a Jupiter the 9th and the 1st; a Saturn the 7th and the 2nd. So a Jupiter 11th lord in the 5th looks at its own house, the 9th and the Lagna at once.

The second lordships in this placement also cross the 5th-11th axis in an interesting way. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 11th lord owns the 4th and sits in the 5th: an angle lord in a trine, the placement form of Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12's yoga-causing link, though the planet's other house is the 11th. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 says that Kendra or Kon lords that also own an evil house do not cause a Raj Yoga by mere relation, so BPHS would not count that link at full value. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 11th lord owns the 2nd as well, so both wealth lordships sit in the house BPHS calls "specially for wealth", and its aspect falls on the 11th. In those rows the verse's happiness and the house's wealth theme point the same way, scaled by a neutral or enemy sign.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 5th lord in the 11th (Sl. 59), reads as learned, dear to people, an author of treatises, very skilful, with many sons and wealth. Both together are a parivartana across the 5th-11th axis. The 11th lord in the 4th (Sl. 124) gives gains through the mother's side and the 11th lord in the 6th (Sl. 126) is one of the set's harsh verses.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mercury in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search found: 6 March 1985, 00:19 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 9.38. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Scorpio rising the 11th house is Virgo, so the 11th lord is Mercury, which also owns Gemini, the 8th.
  • The 5th house is Pisces. Mercury is there at 4.15 degrees, Uttara Bhadrapada pada 1, "Debilitated", and combust.
  • Mars, the Lagna lord (and 6th lord), and Venus, exalted (lord of the 7th and 12th), share Pisces.
  • The Moon is in Leo, the 10th; Saturn is in Scorpio, the 1st, "Enemy sign"; the 11th, Virgo, is empty.

Mercury's 7th aspect falls on Virgo, so the 11th is aspected by its own lord. Ch. 40 Sl. 2 then asks whether the 10th and 11th are free of malefic occupation and aspect. The 11th is empty, and the 10th holds only the Moon; but Saturn in the 1st casts its 10th aspect on the 10th, so the rule is not met in this chart. On Sl. 145-148's scale a debilitated, combust Mercury is the weakest case for Sl. 125. The engine's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga here comes from Venus and Mars together in the 5th and from the Sun and Moon in mutual aspect, not from Mercury.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 5th house in 272, or 9.1%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 11th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the fifth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity in your chart, which may be better than the sign-only column.
  4. For Ch. 40 Sl. 2, check whether malefics occupy or aspect the 10th and 11th.

Questions about the 11th lord in the 5th

What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in the 5th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 125: happy, educated, virtuous and religious, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Does the 11th lord aspect the 11th from the 5th?
Yes. The 11th is the 7th from the 5th, and every graha aspects its 7th. That supplies one condition of BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 2.
Does it promise gains through children or speculation?
Sl. 125 names happiness, education, virtue and religion, not gains through children. This app does not forecast income from a placement.
Why is the table so weak?
For no Ascendant is the 11th lord exalted or in its own sign in the 5th; five rows are enemy signs and one is debilitated. Real charts can lift a row through temporary friendship.
What does the reverse placement say?
The 5th lord in the 11th (Sl. 59): learned, dear to people, an author, skilful, with many sons and wealth.
How common is it?
It occurred in 272 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.1%.
