In short
The 11th lord in the 4th house is the ruler of gains placed in the angle of home, mother, land and vehicles. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 124 reads it as gains from maternal relatives, visits to shrines and the happiness of house and lands. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 11th lord also owns the 4th and is in its own sign there; for Sagittarius rising it is exalted.
What the placement means
"The 11th lord in the 4th house" is the lord of gains, income and elder siblings standing in the house of home, mother, land, vehicles and inner contentment. The house of returns carries its affairs into the house of foundations.
The 4th is a Kendra. Counted from the 11th, it is the 6th. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) governs the mother, home, land, conveyances and happiness.
What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 4th
Ch. 24 Sl. 124: if the lord of Labh is in the Bandhu Bhava, the native "will gain from maternal relatives", will undertake visits to shrines, and will possess the happiness of house and lands. The bphs-alt text has the same words; the bphs.txt print in this corpus numbers the verse "12.", a misprint, since it sits between Sl. 123 and Sl. 125 and the alternative text numbers it 124. Each clause is a 4th-house theme (the mother's family, home and land) turned into a gain.
The pilgrimage clause is interesting because it recurs: BPHS gives shrines to the 2nd lord in the 9th (Sl. 21) and to the 12th lord in the 5th (Sl. 137) as well. Here it sits with property and the mother's side, so the verse reads the 4th as both home and the place one returns from travel to. Sl. 145-148 scale the whole: full, half or a quarter by strength, both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.
An "evil" lord in an angle
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 class the 11th lord among the evil lordships and add, for the angles, that benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects and malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious. The 11th lord in the 4th is not a Kendra lord unless it also owns the 4th, which happens for Cancer rising (Venus, Taurus and Libra) and Capricorn rising (Mars, Aries and Scorpio). In those two rows a planet owning an angle and the 11th sits at home in the angle, and Ch. 34 Sl. 7 lets the more significant house, the 4th, lead. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 11th lord in the 4th.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).
| Ascendant | 11th lord | 4th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 10th |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Gemini | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 6th |
| Cancer | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 4th |
| Leo | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 2nd |
| Virgo | Moon | Sagittarius | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Libra | Sun | Capricorn | Enemy sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 8th |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 6th |
| Capricorn | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 4th |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 2nd |
| Pisces | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 12th |
Three rows are strong: Cancer rising (Venus in its own Libra, moolatrikona by degree), Capricorn rising (Mars in its own Aries) and Sagittarius rising (Venus exalted in Pisces; Venus owns the 6th and 11th). No row is debilitated. Four are enemy signs: Saturn in Cancer (Aries rising), Mars in Virgo (Gemini), the Sun in Capricorn (Libra) and Jupiter in Taurus (Aquarius).
Panchamahapurusha cases
Because the 4th is a Kendra, the three strong rows each form a Panchamahapurusha yoga in this app's sense: Malavya Yoga for Cancer and Sagittarius rising (Venus) and Ruchaka Yoga for Capricorn rising (Mars). The yoga comes from sign and house, not lordship; the engine reports it whenever the 11th lord is in the 4th for those Ascendants, whatever else the chart holds.
The enemy-sign rows
Four Ascendants put the 11th lord in an enemy sign in the 4th, and each pairs it with a different second house. For Aries rising Saturn owns the 10th and 11th and stands in Cancer: two upachaya-and-angle lordships, weak, in the angle of home. For Gemini rising Mars owns the 6th and 11th and stands in Virgo. For Libra rising the Sun, with no second house, stands in Capricorn. For Aquarius rising Jupiter owns the 2nd and 11th, both wealth houses, and stands in Taurus. By Sl. 145-148 the verse comes through at a reduced share in all four, but what travels with it differs: a work lordship for Aries, a dusthana for Gemini, nothing for Libra and a second wealth lordship for Aquarius.
Counted from the 11th, the 4th is the 6th, the house of obstacles relative to gains. BPHS does not read Sl. 124 that way; the verse is entirely favourable. The derived count is noted only because it is often quoted for this placement.
Strength changes the reading
After dignity, the second lordship decides. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 11th lord owns the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 6th; for Pisces, the 12th; for Aries, the 10th, a second angle. Combustion and company come next.
From the 4th, every graha aspects the 10th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 7th and the 11th, so for Capricorn and Gemini rising Mars in the 4th looks back at its own 11th; a Jupiter the 8th and the 12th; a Saturn the 6th and the 1st.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 4th lord in the 11th (Sl. 47), reads as liberal, virtuous, charitable and helpful, with a fear of hidden illness that this app reports only as the text's claim. Both together are a parivartana between an angle and an upachaya. The 11th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 123) is about skill and siblings and the 11th lord in the 5th (Sl. 125) about education and religion.
Worked example: Sagittarius rising, exalted Venus in Pisces
The engine's deterministic search found: 15 March 1985, 02:56 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Sagittarius 23.1. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Sagittarius rising the 11th house is Libra, so the 11th lord is Venus, which also owns Taurus, the 6th.
- The 4th house is Pisces. Venus is there at 28.63 degrees, Revati pada 4, "Exalted", and retrograde.
- The Sun (0.6, the 9th lord) and Mercury (18.67, debilitated, the 7th and 10th lord) share Pisces.
- The engine reports Malavya Yoga for Venus, Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga for the Sun and Mercury, and a Kendra-Kona link for the same pair.
This is the exalted row of the table. On Sl. 145-148's scale Sl. 124 would come through fully, and its second lordship, the 6th, is a dusthana Ch. 34 calls evil, so the chapter's "varied results" applies. The 4th holds three lords at once: the 11th and 6th (Venus), the 9th (the Sun) and the 7th and 10th (Mercury), and the engine's Dharma-Karmadhipati and Kendra-Kona findings come from the last two, not from Venus.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 4th house in 245, or 8.2%. That counts moments, not people.

Questions about the 11th lord in the 4th
- What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in the 4th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 124: gains from maternal relatives, visits to shrines and the happiness of house and lands, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
- Does it mean gains through property?
- The verse names house and lands as a happiness, and gains through the mother's side. This app does not forecast property or income from a placement.
- Why is the verse numbered 12 in one translation?
- It is a misprint in the bphs.txt edition in this project's corpus. The verse sits between Sl. 123 and Sl. 125, and the alternative text numbers it 124.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- By sign: Cancer (Venus in Libra), Capricorn (Mars in Aries) and Sagittarius (Venus exalted in Pisces). No Ascendant debilitates the 11th lord here.
- Does the 11th lord in the 4th form a Panchamahapurusha yoga?
- For three Ascendants, in this app: Cancer and Sagittarius rising (Venus in Libra or Pisces, Malavya) and Capricorn rising (Mars in Aries, Ruchaka). The yoga comes from the planet\'s sign in a Kendra, not from its lordship.
- What does the reverse placement say?
- The 4th lord in the 11th (BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 47) reads as liberal, virtuous, charitable and helpful to others, with a fear of hidden illness that this app reports only as the text\'s claim. Both together are an exchange the engine reports as a Parivartana Yoga.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 245 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
