In short
The 4th lord in the 11th house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the house of gains and income. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 47 reads it as liberal, virtuous, charitable and helpful to others, with a classical bodily clause that is not medical advice. BPHS Ch. 15 names this placement in one of its rules on conveyances, and an exchange between the 4th and 11th lords in another.
What the placement means
The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment. In the 11th house it sits in the house of income, gains and prosperity. The lord of what a family holds is placed in the house of what comes in.
The 11th is an upachaya and the 8th counted from the 4th. It is neither an angle nor a trine nor a dusthana, so the Bhrigu Sutras' two 4th-lord clauses are silent here; BPHS Ch. 24 and Ch. 15 carry the classical reading.
The two houses involved
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds in Ch. 11 Sl. 12. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 11th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 47 says that with the 4th lord in the 11th the native "will have fear of secret disease", and "will be liberal, virtuous, charitable and helpful to others". bphs-alt.txt has the same text. The first clause is a classical bodily association, reported here and not as a medical statement or prediction.
The rest of the verse describes a giving temperament: liberality, charity, helpfulness. That is an interesting choice for the house of gains. Where the verses for the 2nd and 3rd lords in the 11th speak of acquiring, this one speaks of giving away. The text does not explain the difference.
The 4th-house chapter names this placement directly. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14, on conveyances, says that if the Lagna lord is a benefic while the 4th lord is debilitated or in the 11th, and Venus is in the 12th, the native obtains vehicles in his 12th year; and that an exchange between the 11th and 4th lords also confers vehicles in the 12th year. Those are the text's timings, reported only as what it says. The same passage adds that benefics related to the 4th lord bring good results for vehicles and malefics the reverse.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the owner of the 11th gives evil effects, which concerns the 11th lord rather than the 4th lord sitting in the 11th; Sl. 15 qualifies yogas for planets that own such a house. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 47 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 11th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 124; the translation prints its number as "12."), reads: gain from maternal relatives, visits to shrines, and the happiness of house and lands. It is the more concrete of the two, giving the 4th's property to the native through the 11th's gains. When both happen together, the 4th and 11th lords have exchanged signs, the configuration Ch. 15 ties to early vehicles, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga, framed as favourable only if the 11th lord also owns an angle or trine.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the 11th sign:
| Ascendant | 4th lord | Other house it rules | 11th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Moon | none | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Taurus | Sun | none | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 1st (Gemini) | Aries | Neutral |
| Cancer | Venus | 11th (Taurus) | Taurus | Own sign |
| Leo | Mars | 9th (Aries) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Virgo | Jupiter | 7th (Pisces) | Cancer | Exalted |
| Libra | Saturn | 5th (Aquarius) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 3rd (Capricorn) | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 1st (Sagittarius) | Libra | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Mars | 11th (Scorpio) | Scorpio | Own sign |
| Aquarius | Venus | 9th (Libra) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Pisces | Mercury | 7th (Virgo) | Capricorn | Neutral |
For Cancer and Capricorn rising one planet owns both the 4th and 11th (Venus for Cancer, Mars for Capricorn), so it is in its own sign in the 11th. Virgo rising gives exaltation: Jupiter, lord of the 4th and 7th, in Cancer. There is no debilitation in the table. Three rows give an enemy's sign (Leo, Libra, Sagittarius), two a friendly one (Taurus, Scorpio) and four a neutral one.
The yogakaraka rows: Mars for Leo rising (in Gemini, enemy), Saturn for Libra rising (in Leo, enemy), Venus for Aquarius rising (in Sagittarius, neutral). For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is the Lagna lord too, so Ch. 24 Sl. 11 (the Lagna lord in the 11th: always gaining, good qualities, fame) applies alongside Sl. 47. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 9th lordship brings Sl. 107 (the 9th lord in the 11th: financial gains day by day). For Libra the 5th lordship brings Sl. 59 (learning, authorship, many sons and wealth).
The remaining rows complete the picture. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 4th lord is also the 11th lord in its own house, so Sl. 131 (the 11th lord in the 11th: gain in all undertakings, with learning and happiness growing day by day) applies to the same planet. For Virgo and Pisces rising the 7th lordship brings Sl. 83 (gain through the spouse, fewer sons, daughters), summarised as the text's statement. For Scorpio rising the 3rd lordship brings Sl. 35 (constant gain in trade). Taken together, the second-lordship verses for the 11th are mostly about gain, which contrasts with Sl. 47's emphasis on generosity; Sl. 145-148 asks for both to be read.
Strength changes the reading
Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 47, and company decides Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14's reading of vehicles. Aspects on the 11th come from the 5th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 3rd and 7th, Mars from the 8th and 4th, and Saturn from the 9th and 2nd. Ch. 15's conveyance rule also asks whether the Lagna lord is a benefic and where Venus is.
Worked example: Leo rising, Mars combust in Gemini
The engine's deterministic search returned: 2 July 1985, 10:20 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 18.67. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Leo rising makes Scorpio the 4th, so Mars is the 4th lord; Mars also owns Aries, the 9th, which makes it the yogakaraka.
- Mars is in Gemini at 21.41 degrees, Punarvasu pada 1: the 11th house. Not retrograde; the engine marks it combust, with dignity Neutral.
- The Sun, the Lagna lord, is in Gemini too, at 16.61, which is why Mars is combust. The Moon, in Sagittarius in the 5th, aspects the 11th.
- The 11th lord, Mercury, is in Cancer in the 12th. Venus is in its own sign, Taurus, in the 10th.
This chart combines Sl. 47 (Mars as 4th lord), Sl. 107 (Mars as 9th lord) and Sl. 11 (the Sun, Lagna lord, in the 11th) in one house. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14's conveyance rule is not met: the Lagna lord, the Sun, is a malefic, and Venus is in the 10th rather than the 12th. Mars is combust, the weak side of Sl. 145-148. The engine's yoga detector reports Malavya and Amala Yoga for Venus in its own sign in the 10th, and Sarala Yoga for Jupiter, the 8th lord, in the 6th; none of these concerns Mars. From the 11th, Mars aspects the 2nd, the 5th and the 6th under the engine's rule.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 11th house in 236, or 7.9%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 11th lord in the 4th house; exchanges are covered under Parivartana Yoga. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 10th and the 4th lord in the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 11th house and Mars in Vedic astrology. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
