In short
The 4th lord in the 10th house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles to the opposite angle, the house of work, rank and honour. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 46 reads it as royal honours, pleasures, great contentment and mastery of the senses. Ch. 15 adds fine houses when the 4th and 10th lords are together in an angle or trine, though by sign alone this is the weakest table in the 4th-lord series.
What the placement means
The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment. In the 10th house it sits directly opposite its own house, at the top of the chart, in the angle of work, authority and honour. Private life is placed in the house of public life.
Both houses are Kendras, and a 4th lord in the 10th always aspects its own house by the seventh-house aspect. The 4th and 10th are the axis BPHS repeatedly pairs: the mother and the father, the home and the career. Several of its rules about the 4th lord ask specifically for the 10th lord's company.
The two houses involved
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is authority, place, livelihood, honour, the father, living abroad and debts in Ch. 11 Sl. 11. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 10th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 46 says that with the 4th lord in the 10th the native "will enjoy royal honours, be an alchemist, be extremely pleased, will enjoy pleasures and will conquer his five senses". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The verse joins the 10th's honour to the 4th's happiness and adds two unusual items. "Alchemist" is a craft the text names without explanation, and this page does not supply one. "Will conquer his five senses" is a statement about self-mastery that sits beside "will enjoy pleasures" without the verse reconciling them. Both are reported as the text's words.
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 gives a structural reason to read this favourably: when a house's lord is "in Karm Bhava", the house's "well-being is indicated", so the 4th lord in the 10th is a sign of the 4th house's strength. The 4th-house chapter adds a rule that names the 10th lord. Ch. 15 Sl. 4 says that if the 10th lord joins the 4th lord in an angle or a trine, "the native will acquire beautiful mansions"; with the 4th lord already in the 10th, the 10th lord needs only to be in its own house. Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10 gives a second form of Kahala Yoga for the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined with the 10th lord. The engine tests neither.
The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus read a strong 4th lord (exalted or in its own sign) in an angle as giving high-class conveyances; the 10th is an angle, so dignity decides. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says benefics owning angles lose benefic force and malefics lose malefic force. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 46 by strength. The Saravali in the corpus gives no separate verse.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 10th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 112), is about the 4th's goods: happiness, care for the mother, mastery over vehicles, lands and houses, virtue and wealth. Sl. 46 gives the 4th lord the 10th's honours; Sl. 112 gives the 10th lord the 4th's property. When both happen at once, the 4th and 10th lords have exchanged signs across the main axis of the chart, which the engine reports as a favourable Parivartana Yoga.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the 10th sign:
| Ascendant | 4th lord | Other house it rules | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Moon | none | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Taurus | Sun | none | Aquarius | Enemy sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 1st (Gemini) | Pisces | Debilitated |
| Cancer | Venus | 11th (Taurus) | Aries | Neutral |
| Leo | Mars | 9th (Aries) | Taurus | Neutral |
| Virgo | Jupiter | 7th (Pisces) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Libra | Saturn | 5th (Aquarius) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 3rd (Capricorn) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 1st (Sagittarius) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Mars | 11th (Scorpio) | Libra | Neutral |
| Aquarius | Venus | 9th (Libra) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Pisces | Mercury | 7th (Virgo) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
By sign this is the weakest table in the 4th-lord series. No Ascendant gives a friendly, own or exalted sign. Gemini rising gives debilitation: Mercury, the Lagna and 4th lord, in Pisces. Five rows give an enemy's sign (Taurus, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius) and six a neutral one. The 10th is the sign opposite the 4th lord's own sign, and for every Ascendant that opposite sign turns out to be ruled by a planet the 4th lord is neutral or hostile to by natural relationship. Because the engine also applies the temporary relationship in a real chart, a neutral label can rise to friendly, as it does in the worked example.
The yogakaraka rows are all neutral or enemy here: Mars for Leo rising (in Taurus, neutral), Saturn for Libra rising (in Cancer, enemy), Venus for Aquarius rising (in Scorpio, neutral). The Bhrigu Sutras' strong-lord clause cannot be met by dignity in this placement for any Ascendant, so its conveyance reading depends on other factors in the chart.
The verses for the second lordships pull the other way: most of Ch. 24's 10th-house verses are favourable. Summarised: for Gemini and Sagittarius rising, Sl. 10 (the Lagna lord in the 10th) gives royal honour and self-earned wealth; for Leo and Aquarius, Sl. 106 (the 9th lord in the 10th) speaks of rank equal to a king, a minister or a commander; for Libra, Sl. 58 (the 5th lord in the 10th) names a Raja Yoga and fame; for Cancer and Capricorn, Sl. 130 (the 11th lord in the 10th) speaks of royal honour, truthfulness and self-control; for Virgo and Pisces, Sl. 82; for Scorpio, Sl. 34. Under Sl. 145-148, weak dignity reduces how much of these the text expects, but it does not reverse them.
Strength changes the reading
Since sign dignity is weak across the board, company and aspects matter more than usual. Aspects on the 10th come from the 4th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 2nd and 6th, Mars from the 7th and 3rd, and Saturn from the 8th and 1st. The 10th lord's position decides Ch. 15 Sl. 4 and Kahala Yoga. BPHS Ch. 7 assigns "power (and position)" to the Dashamsa, so the 4th lord's place there is part of the classical method. Combustion weakens the lord as usual.
Worked example: Pisces rising, Mercury in Sagittarius
The engine's deterministic search returned: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 23.04. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Pisces rising makes Gemini the 4th, so Mercury is the 4th lord. Mercury also owns Virgo, the 7th.
- Mercury is in Sagittarius at 16.62 degrees, Purva Ashadha pada 1: the 10th house. Not retrograde, not combust. Neutral by sign alone; in this chart the engine gives "Friendly sign".
- The Moon is also in Sagittarius, at 12.66.
- The 10th lord, Jupiter, is debilitated and combust in Capricorn in the 11th. Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 10th.
Mercury carries both of its angle lordships into the 10th, so Sl. 46 and Sl. 82 (the 7th lord in the 10th) both apply under Sl. 145-148. Ch. 15 Sl. 4 and Kahala Yoga do not form, because the 10th lord is in the 11th, not with Mercury. The engine does report Amala Yoga for Mercury: a natural benefic in the 10th from the Lagna, with no malefic in the 10th and no malefic aspect on it. That rule comes from the engine's reading of Advanced Predictive Astrology rather than from BPHS. The 7th-lord series uses this same chart for its own sample page, where Mercury is read as the 7th lord.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 10th house in 250, or 8.3%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 10th lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 9th and the 4th lord in the 11th; the same chart's 7th-lord reading is on the 7th lord in the 10th. The Dashamsa calculator computes the tenth division. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 10th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 4th lord in the 10th house
- What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 10th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 46: royal honours, skill as an "alchemist", great contentment, enjoyment of pleasures and mastery of the senses.
- What if the 10th lord joins it?
- BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads the 4th and 10th lords together in an angle or trine as beautiful mansions, and Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10 names Kahala Yoga when the 4th lord is also in its own or exaltation sign. The engine tests neither.
- Why is the dignity table so weak?
- For every Ascendant the 10th sign is ruled by a planet the 4th lord is neutral or hostile to by natural relationship, or, for Gemini rising, it is Mercury's debilitation sign.
