In short
The 10th lord in the 4th house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the angle of home, mother, land and vehicles, directly opposite its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 112 reads it as happy, devoted to the mother's welfare, lord of conveyances, lands and houses, virtuous and wealthy. By sign it is never exalted or in its own sign here.
What the placement means
"The 10th lord in the 4th house" is the lord of work, rank and public life standing in the house of home, mother, landed property, vehicles and inner contentment. The lord of the outer, public angle sits in the inner, private one.
The 4th and 10th are opposite Kendras. Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, so a 10th lord in the 4th always aspects its own house, the 10th. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is the angle of the mother, home, land, conveyances and happiness.
What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 4th
Ch. 24 Sl. 112: if the lord of Karm is in the Bandhu Bhava, the native "will be happy, be always interested in his mother's welfare", will be lord over conveyances, lands and houses, and will be virtuous and wealthy. The bphs-alt text agrees. Almost every clause is a 4th-house matter; the 10th lord's contribution is the word "lord", command over the house's possessions.
Sl. 145-148 then scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses. That scaling is unusually important here, because the table below has no strong rows at all.
The 4th-10th axis in the yoga chapters
Ch. 39 Sl. 35 gives a royal combination built on this axis: the 4th lord in the 10th and the 10th lord in the 4th (an exchange), with those planets aspecting the 5th and 9th lords; "the native will attain a kingdom". Sl. 37 adds that the lord of the 4th or 10th joining the 5th or 9th lord has the same result. The engine does not test those two verses as written, but its Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga catches part of them: a 10th lord in the 4th that sits with a 5th or 9th lord, or stands in mutual aspect with one placed in the 10th.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also apply: benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects, malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 10th lord in the 4th.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier by one step).
| Ascendant | 10th lord | 4th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 11th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Leo | Enemy sign | 9th |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Virgo | Enemy sign | 7th |
| Cancer | Mars | Libra | Neutral | 5th |
| Leo | Venus | Scorpio | Neutral | 3rd |
| Virgo | Mercury | Sagittarius | Neutral | 1st |
| Libra | Moon | Capricorn | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Sun | Aquarius | Enemy sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Pisces | Debilitated | 7th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Aries | Neutral | 5th |
| Aquarius | Mars | Taurus | Neutral | 3rd |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Gemini | Enemy sign | 1st |
This is one of the weakest tables in the 10th lord's set. No Ascendant puts the 10th lord exalted or in its own sign in the 4th. Sagittarius rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces, where Mercury also owns the 7th. Five rows are enemy signs: Saturn in Cancer (Aries) and in Leo (Taurus), Jupiter in Virgo (Gemini) and in Gemini (Pisces), and the Sun in Aquarius (Scorpio). The rest are neutral. Read with Sl. 145-148, the verse's happiness and possessions arrive, by sign alone, at half strength or less for most rising signs.
Strength changes the reading
With dignity rarely helping, the other measures matter more. The chart's temporary friendships can lift a row by one tier, as the worked example below shows: the Sun, an enemy-sign case by nature, is neutral in that chart. Company and combustion come next.
The second lordship is the strongest counterweight. For Cancer rising Mars owns the 5th and 10th; for Capricorn rising Venus does the same; both are yogakarakas under Ch. 34 Sl. 13, sitting in an angle. For Virgo and Pisces rising the 10th lord is also the Lagna lord. For Aries rising Saturn also owns the 11th, and for Leo rising Venus owns the 3rd, both lordships Ch. 34 calls evil.
Special aspects add detail: a Mars 10th lord in the 4th also aspects the 7th and 11th, a Jupiter the 8th and 12th, a Saturn the 6th and 1st, so a Saturn 10th lord here watches both its own 10th and the Lagna.
Benefic and malefic 10th lords in the 4th
Because both houses are angles, Ch. 34's rule on Kendra lordship applies twice over: the 10th lord owns an angle and sits in one. For Gemini and Pisces rising the 10th lord is Jupiter, and for Virgo and Sagittarius rising it is Mercury; Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 list Mercury and Jupiter among the benefics whose Kendra lordship most reduces their benefic effects. For Aries and Taurus rising the 10th lord is Saturn and for Aquarius rising Mars, malefics that by the same rule do not stay inauspicious as Kendra lords. The verse is the same for all of them; the lordship rule is what changes how much of it BPHS expects to be pleasant.
The derived view adds one more point. The 4th is the 7th from the 10th, the house of partnership relative to work. BPHS does not read Sl. 112 that way, and this page does not either; the verse is about home, mother and possessions.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 4th lord in the 10th (Sl. 46), reads as royal honours, skill as an alchemist, pleasures and mastery of the senses. Both together are the exchange of Ch. 39 Sl. 35 and a parivartana the engine reports. The 10th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 111) is about helpers and courage and the 10th lord in the 5th (Sl. 113) about learning and children. Sl. 112 is the 10th lord turned toward home.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, the Sun in Aquarius
The engine's deterministic search found: 6 March 1985, 00:19 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 9.38. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Scorpio rising the 10th house is Leo, so the 10th lord is the Sun, which rules no other sign.
- The 4th house is Aquarius. The Sun is there at 21.5 degrees, Purva Bhadrapada pada 1, "Neutral" in this chart.
- The Moon, the 9th lord, is opposite in Leo, the 10th, at 3.35.
- Saturn, the 4th lord, is in Scorpio in the 1st, "Enemy sign"; the Lagna lord Mars is in Pisces in the 5th.
The Sun in the 4th and the Moon in the 10th aspect each other across the axis, a Kendra lord and a Kona lord in mutual aspect, and the engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for that pair. It is a partial version of what Ch. 39 Sl. 37 describes (the 10th lord linked to the 9th lord), formed by aspect rather than by joining. Ch. 39 Sl. 35's exchange does not hold: Saturn, the 4th lord, is in the 1st, not the 10th. By sign the Sun is the table's enemy-sign case for Scorpio rising; the chart's temporary relationship moves it to neutral.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 4th house in 244, or 8.1%. That is a count of sampled moments, not people.
Checking it in your own chart
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 10th lord from the table.
- Check whether it stands in the fourth sign in your birth chart.
- Note its dignity in your chart, which may differ from the sign-only column.
- Note what sits in the 10th, since the lord aspects it, and whether the 4th lord is in the 10th.
Questions about the 10th lord in the 4th
- What does BPHS say about the 10th lord in the 4th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 112: happy, devoted to the mother's welfare, lord of conveyances, lands and houses, virtuous and wealthy, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
- Does it mean working from home or in real estate?
- The verse names possessions and the mother, not an occupation. This app does not predict a type of work from a placement.
- Does the 10th lord aspect the 10th from the 4th?
- Yes. The 10th is the 7th house from the 4th, and every graha aspects its 7th.
- Why is the table weak for this placement?
- For no Ascendant does the 10th lord fall in its own or exaltation sign in the 4th; one row is debilitated (Sagittarius rising) and five are enemy signs. Real charts can lift the tier through temporary friendship.
- What happens if the 4th and 10th lords exchange signs?
- BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 35 reads that exchange, when the two lords also aspect the 5th and 9th lords, as attaining a kingdom. The engine reports the exchange itself as a Parivartana Yoga; it does not test the aspects to the trine lords as written.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 244 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.1%.
