In short

The 10th lord in the 5th house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the trine of children, intelligence and learning. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 113 reads it as learned in every branch, always delighted, wealthy and blessed with children. It is a Kendra lord in a Kona, one of the links BPHS builds its yoga rules on, and it is the first condition of Sharad Yoga.

What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 5th house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of children, intelligence, learning, devotion and the merit carried from past lives. The lord brings the 10th house's affairs into the 5th.

The 10th is a Kendra and the 5th a trikona, so this is the angle lord in a trine, the mirror of the trine-lord-in-angle case. Counted from the 10th, the 5th is the 8th. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is the trine of children, intellect and learning; BPHS Ch. 34 calls the 5th and 9th "specially for wealth".

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 5th

Ch. 24 Sl. 113: if the lord of Karm is in the Putr Bhava, the native "will be endowed with all kinds of learning", will always be delighted, and will be wealthy and endowed with sons. The bphs-alt text matches. The verse is almost entirely in the 5th house's own terms: learning, contentment, children. The 10th lord's contribution is that these become the field of the person's work and its rewards.

Sl. 145-148 apply as everywhere in the chapter: full, half or a quarter of the result according to strength, and both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.

An angle lord in a trine

Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 list a Kendra lord in a Kon among the links that cause a yoga, and Sl. 13 names a planet a Yog Karak when it owns both or sits in one. The 10th lord in the 5th satisfies the placement form of that rule. This app's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga is narrower: it reports a link only when a Kendra lord and a Kona lord are joined in one house or in mutual aspect. From the 5th the 10th lord's 7th aspect falls on the 11th, so the engine finds the link when the 10th lord shares the 5th with the 1st, 5th or 9th lord, or when one of them in the 11th aspects it back.

Ch. 39 Sl. 37 states a stronger version: if the lord of the 4th or the 10th joins the 5th lord or the 9th lord, "the native will obtain a kingdom". With the 10th lord in the 5th, the 5th lord at home beside it meets that condition directly.

Sharad Yoga

Ch. 36 Sl. 19-20 name Sharad Yoga, whose first form begins with exactly this placement: the 10th lord in the 5th, while Mercury is in a Kendra and a strong Sun is in Leo. The native, the text says, obtains wealth, spouse and children, and is happy, scholarly, dear to the king, pious and virtuous. The second form uses other planets (Jupiter or Mercury in a trine from the Moon, Mars in the 11th). The engine does not test Sharad Yoga. For Aries rising the 5th is Leo itself, so the 10th lord Saturn and a Sun in Leo would share that sign; for Scorpio rising the Sun is the 10th lord, and Sharad Yoga's Sun-in-Leo condition would then put it in the 10th, not the 5th, so the first form cannot occur for that Ascendant.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on this placement.

Three rows stand out. Cancer and Capricorn rising make the 10th lord also the 5th lord, so it is in its own sign: Mars in Scorpio, Venus in Taurus. Both are yogakarakas, angle and trine owned by one planet, sitting in the trine. Pisces rising puts Jupiter, the Lagna and 10th lord, exalted in Cancer. No row is debilitated. Three are enemy signs: Saturn in Leo (Aries rising), Jupiter in Libra (Gemini) and Mars in Gemini (Aquarius). The rest are friendly or neutral.

Strength changes the reading

Sl. 145-148 put dignity first, and here it is unusually favourable. Combustion and company come next. Because this is a Kendra lord in a Kona, the planets that join it decide whether the BPHS yoga links are completed: a 5th or 9th lord beside it (Ch. 39 Sl. 37), or a Kona lord in mutual aspect from the 11th.

The second lordship adds detail. For Aries rising Saturn also owns the 11th; for Leo rising Venus owns the 3rd; for Aquarius rising Mars owns the 3rd too. Those are lordships Ch. 34 calls evil, and Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds that a Kendra or Kon lord that also owns an evil house does not cause a Raj Yoga by mere relation. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 10th lord also owns the 7th, so two angles' lords sit in a trine as one planet.

From the 5th, every graha aspects the 11th. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 8th and 12th; a Jupiter the 9th and the 1st; a Saturn the 7th and the 2nd. A Jupiter 10th lord in the 5th therefore looks at both the other trine and the Lagna.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 5th lord in the 10th (Sl. 58), is the verse that names a Raj Yoga outright: "the native will enjoy a Raj Yog", with pleasures and fame. Both together are a parivartana between a trine and an angle, the first of the yoga-causing links in Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12. The 10th lord in the 4th (Sl. 112) is about home and possessions and the 10th lord in the 6th (Sl. 114) about enemies and lack of wealth. Sl. 113 is the 10th lord's verse about learning.

Worked example: Sagittarius rising, Mercury in Aries

The engine's deterministic search found: 17 May 1985, 21:15 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Sagittarius 1.87. Anyone can enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Sagittarius rising the 10th house is Virgo and the 10th lord is Mercury, which also rules Gemini, the 7th.
  • The 5th house is Aries. Mercury is there at 11.92 degrees, Ashwini pada 4, not retrograde, not combust, "Friendly sign".
  • The Moon (8.48) and Rahu (24.27) share Aries with it. The 5th lord Mars and the 9th lord Sun are together in Taurus, the 6th.
  • The Lagna lord Jupiter is in Capricorn in the 2nd, "Debilitated"; Venus is exalted in Pisces in the 4th.

Sharad Yoga does not form: Mercury, its second condition, is the 10th lord itself and sits in the 5th, not a Kendra, and the Sun is in Taurus, not Leo. Ch. 39 Sl. 37 does not hold either, because the 5th and 9th lords are in the 6th, not with Mercury. The engine reports a Raja Yoga in this chart, but through Mars and the Sun, the 5th and 9th lords joined in the 6th; its rule does not exclude a dusthana, whereas BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 15 would discount links that involve evil lordships. On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, uncombust Mercury is a good case for Sl. 113 on its own.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 5th house in 246, or 8.2%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 10th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the fifth sign in your birth chart.
  3. See whether the 5th or 9th lord is with it (Ch. 39 Sl. 37), and for Sharad Yoga check Mercury's house and the Sun's sign.
  4. Run the yoga calculator to see what the engine flags.

Questions about the 10th lord in the 5th

What does BPHS say about the 10th lord in the 5th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 113: learned in every branch, always delighted, wealthy and blessed with children, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Is the 10th lord in the 5th a Raj Yoga?
BPHS counts a Kendra lord in a Kon as a yoga-causing link (Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12). The engine is stricter and reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga only when a Kendra lord and a Kona lord are joined or in mutual aspect. See what a yoga in your chart means.
What is Sharad Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 19-20: the 10th lord in the 5th, Mercury in a Kendra and a strong Sun in Leo. The engine does not test it; it can be checked by hand.
Does it mean work in education or with children?
The verse names learning and children as classical results, not as a profession. This app does not predict careers from a placement.
Which Ascendants are strongest here by sign?
Cancer (Mars in Scorpio) and Capricorn (Venus in Taurus), where the 10th lord owns the 5th too, and Pisces (Jupiter exalted in Cancer).
How common is it?
It occurred in 246 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
