What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 3rd house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of younger siblings, initiative, courage, communication and the hands. The lord carries the 10th house's affairs into the 3rd.

The 3rd and the 10th are both upachayas, houses of growth, so this placement joins two houses the texts expect to improve with effort. Counted from the 10th, the 3rd is the 6th. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and action.

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) covers co-born siblings, valour, effort and short journeys.

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 3rd

Ch. 24 Sl. 111: if the lord of Karm is in the Sahaj Bhava, the native "will enjoy happiness from brothers and servants", be valorous, virtuous, eloquent and truthful. The bphs-alt wording is identical. Servants enter the verse alongside brothers, which is the 3rd house read as the people who help one act. Eloquence and valour are the 3rd's own qualities; truthfulness and virtue are the 10th lord's contribution.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter of the result for a strong, middling or weak planet, and a planet ruling two houses gives both lordships' results, with contrary results cancelling.

Ownership of the 3rd is a different rule

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 list the owner of the 3rd among the lords that give evil effects. That rule is about which planet rules the 3rd, and it becomes relevant to this page in exactly two rows: Leo rising, where Venus owns both the 3rd and the 10th, and Aquarius rising, where Mars owns both. There the 10th lord in the 3rd is also a 3rd lord in its own sign, and Ch. 34 Sl. 7, on the predominant lordship stalling the lesser, would let the 10th, a Kendra, lead. Elsewhere, the placement is simply the 10th lord visiting the 3rd, and Sl. 111 is favourable throughout.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse on this placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

Three rows are strong. Leo rising puts Venus in its own Libra (moolatrikona by degree) and Aquarius rising puts Mars in its own Aries, both 3rd-and-10th lords at home. Capricorn rising puts Venus exalted in Pisces, and Venus is the Capricorn yogakaraka, owning the 5th and 10th. No row is debilitated. Four are enemy signs: Saturn in Cancer (Taurus rising, where Saturn owns the 9th and 10th), Mars in Virgo (Cancer rising), the Sun in Capricorn (Scorpio rising) and Jupiter in Taurus (Pisces rising, where Jupiter is the Lagna lord too).

Strength changes the reading

Sl. 145-148 put dignity first; company and combustion follow. Because the 3rd is an upachaya and not a dusthana, a weak 10th lord here is not read with the losses BPHS attaches to the 6th, 8th and 12th; Sl. 111 contains no unfavourable clause at all.

Aspects give this placement a particular shape. From the 3rd, every graha aspects the 9th. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 6th and the 10th, so it looks back at its own house; a Saturn aspects the 5th and the 12th; a Jupiter the 7th and the 11th. For Aquarius rising, where Mars owns the 3rd and the 10th, a Mars in Aries therefore watches its other house, the 10th, from its own.

The strong and weak rows in more detail

Capricorn rising is the most interesting row. Venus there owns Taurus, the 5th, and Libra, the 10th: a trine and an angle, the yogakaraka of Ch. 34 Sl. 13. In the 3rd it is exalted in Pisces. So the chart's most favourable lordship sits at its strongest dignity in an upachaya, and Sl. 111 would be read at full strength under Sl. 145-148, before company and combustion are considered.

Taurus rising is the mirror case. Saturn owns the 9th and the 10th, the Taurus yogakaraka, and in the 3rd it falls in Cancer, an enemy sign by nature. The verse is favourable, but the planet carrying it is weak by sign, and the chapter's rule would give a reduced share. Pisces rising adds a third pattern: Jupiter owns both the 1st and the 10th, so the person's own ruler sits in the 3rd, in Taurus, again an enemy sign.

Counted from the 10th, the 3rd is the 6th: the house of obstacles relative to the house of work. BPHS does not use that derived count in Sl. 111, which is entirely favourable, and this page does not invent a reading from it.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 10th (Sl. 34), reads as every kind of happiness and self-made wealth, with a clause about wicked women that this app reports only as the text's wording. Both together are a parivartana between two upachayas. The 10th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 110) is about wealth and the father; the 10th lord in the 4th (Sl. 112) about the mother, land and conveyances. Sl. 111 is the 10th lord's verse about helpers and courage.

• The Moon (Aries 6.81, "Enemy sign") and Rahu (27.16) share the 3rd with it.
• The Lagna lord Saturn is in Scorpio, the 10th house, retrograde, "Enemy sign".

This chart is the own-sign case in the table: a 3rd-and-10th lord in its own 3rd. From there Mars aspects the 9th (its 7th), the 6th (its 4th) and the 10th (its 8th), and the 10th holds the Lagna lord Saturn, so the 10th lord looks at the person's own ruler sitting in its house. On Sl. 145-148's scale an own-sign, uncombust Mars is the strong case; the two lordships, one a Kendra and one a house Ch. 34 calls evil, are the "varied" results the chapter says both come to pass.
