In short

The 10th lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of work and rank placed in the house of wealth, family and speech. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 110 reads it as wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king, charitable and happy through the father. By sign it is exalted for Gemini rising and debilitated for Leo and Libra rising.

What the placement means

"The 10th lord in the 2nd house" is the lord of work, rank and public action standing in the house of family, speech, food and accumulated wealth. As a house lord it carries the 10th house's affairs there.

Counted from the 10th, the 2nd is the 5th, a trine from the lord's own house. Counted from the Ascendant it is the house of wealth, so the placement reads naturally as work turned into savings and family standing. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the angle of work, status and deeds.

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is the house of family, speech and stored wealth; its page covers those readings.

What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 2nd

Ch. 24 Sl. 110: if the lord of Karm is in the Dhan Bhava, the native "will be wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king", charitable, and will enjoy happiness from father and others. The bphs-alt wording is the same. Two clauses come from the 2nd (wealth, and charity as its use), two from the 10th (honour from authority, and the father, whom some readings place in the 10th as well as the 9th), and virtue sits between them.

Sl. 145-148 qualify every verse of the chapter: full, half or a quarter of the result by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling. The verse is favourable throughout, so strength sets how much of it the text expects.

What else bears on it

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 read Kendra lordship by the planet's nature: a benefic ruling the 10th does not give benefic effects simply by owning it, and a malefic ruling it does not stay malefic. That shapes how the 10th lord brings Sl. 110 into the 2nd. Ch. 39 Sl. 29-31 list a kingly combination in which a planet ruling the 4th, 10th, 2nd or 11th aspects the Lagna while Venus aspects the 11th. From the 2nd, the 10th lord's 7th aspect falls on the 8th, not the Lagna, so only a Mars, Jupiter or Saturn 10th lord with a special aspect could reach the Lagna from here: Saturn's 10th aspect from the 2nd lands on the 11th, Jupiter's 9th on the 10th, Mars's 8th on the 9th. None of them reaches the 1st, so that combination is not formed by this placement.

The 2nd is the house where Dhana Yoga language usually lives, but BPHS Ch. 41's wealth yogas name the 9th and 5th lords, not the 10th. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 10th lord in the 2nd.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 10th lord and the 2nd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Gemini rising gives the one exalted row: Jupiter in Cancer, owning the 7th and the 10th, two Kendras, the benefic case Ch. 34 reads with reserve. Two rows are debilitated: Venus in Virgo for Leo rising (Venus also owns the 3rd) and the Moon in Scorpio for Libra rising. No row is an enemy sign; the other nine are friendly or neutral, so by sign this is a comfortable placement for the 10th lord apart from those two.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, look at company: in the 2nd the 10th lord joins whatever else governs family and money. A Kona lord beside it forms the Kendra-Kona link the engine tests. Combustion weakens it.

The second lordship varies more here than for most rows. For Aries and Taurus rising the 10th lord Saturn also owns the 11th or the 9th; for Cancer and Capricorn rising Mars or Venus also owns the 5th, the yogakaraka pair of Ch. 34 Sl. 13; for Virgo and Pisces rising the 10th lord is also the Lagna lord, so the person's own ruler stands in the house of wealth. Sl. 145-148 ask that each be read alongside Sl. 110.

From the 2nd, every graha aspects the 8th. A Mars 10th lord also aspects the 5th and 9th; a Jupiter the 6th and 10th, so a Jupiter 10th lord in the 2nd looks back at its own house; a Saturn the 4th and 11th.

The father in the 10th lord's verses

Sl. 110 is one of several Ch. 24 verses that tie the father to the 10th lord. Sl. 114 (the 10th lord in the 6th) speaks of being "bereft of paternal bliss", Sl. 142 (the 12th lord in the 10th) of "moderate paternal bliss", and Sl. 94 (the 8th lord in the 10th) of being "devoid of paternal bliss". BPHS therefore reads the father from the 10th as well as from the 9th, and Sl. 110 is the favourable case: the 10th lord in a wealth house gives happiness from the father. This page reports that reading; it does not turn it into a statement about anyone's parent.

Gemini rising deserves one more line. Jupiter there owns the 7th and the 10th, two Kendras, and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 say that in revealing the maleficence of Kendra lordship, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are significant "in the ascending order", so Jupiter and Venus carry that reserve most. An exalted Jupiter in the 2nd is the table's strongest row by sign and, by Ch. 34, the one most qualified by lordship.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 10th (Sl. 22), reads as libidinous, honourable and learned, with much wealth but without happiness from children, the text's claim and not this app's. Both together are a parivartana between the house of wealth and the house of work. The 10th lord in the 1st (Sl. 109) is about the person and the 10th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 111) about siblings and servants; Sl. 110 is the one that names wealth and the father.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, the Sun with Jupiter

This is the first moment in the engine's deterministic search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. It reproduces in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Scorpio rising the 10th house is Leo and the 10th lord is the Sun, which rules no other sign.
  • The 2nd house is Sagittarius. The Sun is there at 16.89 degrees, Purva Ashadha pada 2, "Neutral" in this chart.
  • Jupiter shares the 2nd at 27.83 in its own sign, combust; for Scorpio rising Jupiter rules the 2nd and the 5th.
  • The Lagna lord Mars is in Aquarius in the 4th, "Friendly sign".

The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga in this chart, and one of its pairs is exactly this: the Sun (a Kendra lord, the 10th) and Jupiter (a Kona lord, the 5th) together in the 2nd. Jupiter is also the 2nd lord at home, so the 10th lord sits with the house's own lord. On Sl. 145-148's scale the Sun here is a middling case, neither friendly nor hostile in this chart, and its companion is strong by sign but combust.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 2nd house in 232, or 7.7%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 10th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it sits in the second sign of your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity, second lordship and the planets with it.
  4. Run the yoga calculator to see whether a Kendra-Kona link is reported.
