In short
The 2nd lord in the 10th house places the ruler of wealth and family in the angle of profession, authority and honour. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 22 reads it as honourable, learned and wealthy, with lines about desire, many wives and little happiness from children that belong to the text. Ch. 13 and Ch. 11 both count a lord in this angle in its house's favour.
What the placement means
The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. In the 10th house it sits in the angle of profession, rank, honour and public action. The placement connects resources to work: what the family holds, and what the person earns and is known for.
The 10th is a Kendra, and the most active of the four. It satisfies the angle condition of BPHS's main wealth rule for the 2nd lord, and it is the one house BPHS Ch. 11 names specifically as a good place for any house's lord to be.
The two houses involved
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is authority, place, livelihood, honour, the father, living abroad and debts in Ch. 11 Sl. 11. The house pages cover both.
What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 10th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 22 says that with the 2nd lord in the 10th the native "will be libidinous, honourable and learned", will have many wives and much wealth, and will be "bereft of filial happiness". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The verse pairs public standing with private cost. Honour, learning and much wealth are the favourable side and fit a wealth lord in the house of honour. The desire and marriage clauses are the chapter's recurring idiom for a male native, and the line about children is a statement the text makes about this placement; all three are reported as the text's claims, not as forecasts. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says both lordships of the planet are read together and that contrary indications cancel, which matters for Ascendants whose 2nd lord also rules the 5th.
Two general rules support the favourable side. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says a 2nd lord in an angle or trine promotes wealth. And Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16, on the prosperity or ruin of a house, says that when a house's lord is "in Karm Bhava", the house's "well-being is indicated". The 10th is singled out there by name. By that rule, the 2nd lord in the 10th is a sign of the 2nd house's well-being, whatever else Sl. 22 says.
The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Set beside the reverse verse
The same two houses appear the other way round in Ch. 24 Sl. 110, the 10th lord in the 2nd: wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king, charitable, and happy through the father. Read together, the two verses share wealth and honour, which is what the pair of houses would suggest from either direction. They differ on family: Sl. 110 gives happiness through the father, while Sl. 22 withholds happiness from children. The direction of travel changes which relative the text mentions. When both placements occur at once, the 2nd and 10th lords have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga; BPHS gives that exchange no verse of its own in the corpus, so the two individual verses are what a reader has to work with.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 10th sign:
| Ascendant | 2nd lord | Other house it rules | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | 7th (Libra) | Capricorn | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Mercury | 5th (Virgo) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Gemini | Moon | none | Pisces | Neutral |
| Cancer | Sun | none | Aries | Exalted |
| Leo | Mercury | 11th (Gemini) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
| Virgo | Venus | 9th (Taurus) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Mars | 7th (Aries) | Cancer | Debilitated |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | 5th (Pisces) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 3rd (Aquarius) | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 1st (Capricorn) | Libra | Exalted |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | 11th (Sagittarius) | Scorpio | Friendly sign |
| Pisces | Mars | 9th (Scorpio) | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
This is one of the strongest 2nd-lord tables. Two rows give exaltation: Cancer rising (the Sun in Aries) and Capricorn rising (Saturn, lord of the 1st and 2nd, in Libra). Seven give a friendly sign and two a neutral one. Libra rising is the single debilitation: Mars, lord of the 2nd and 7th, in Cancer.
The second lordships colour the reading. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 2nd lord also owns the 5th, the house of children, so Sl. 22's line about filial happiness meets a 5th lordship in the same planet. For Virgo and Pisces rising it owns the 9th, putting a trine lord in an angle, a Kendra-trikona relation Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 reads as yoga-forming. For Leo and Aquarius rising it owns the 11th, so both wealth lordships are in the house of work. For Capricorn rising the exalted Saturn is also the Lagna lord.
Strength changes the reading
With a generally strong table, the factors to check are combustion, company and aspects. Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 reads the 2nd and 11th lords both combust or with malefics as penury, and Sl. 13 malefics with the 2nd lord as untruthful speech. Aspects on the 10th come from the 4th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 2nd and 6th, Mars from the 7th and 3rd, and Saturn from the 8th and 1st.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "power (and position)" to the Dashamsa, the tenth division, so a reader following the classical method would also check the 2nd lord there. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds that benefics owning angles lose some of their benefic force and malefics some of their malefic force; for the 2nd lord in the 10th that applies only where it also owns an angle (Aries and Libra rising, the 7th; Capricorn rising, the 1st).
Worked example: Cancer rising, the Sun exalted in Aries
The engine's deterministic search returned: 20 April 1985, 13:24 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 26.31. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Cancer rising makes Leo the 2nd, so the Sun is the 2nd lord. It owns no other sign.
- The Sun is in Aries at 6.53 degrees, Ashwini pada 2: the 10th house, and the engine marks it Exalted.
- The Moon, the Lagna lord, is in Aries at 7.67, about one degree from the Sun and marked combust. Rahu is in Aries too, at 25.71.
- The 10th lord, Mars, is in Taurus in the 11th. No graha other than the nodes aspects the 10th.
This is the full-strength case of Sl. 145-148: an exalted 2nd lord, owning nothing else, in an angle that Ch. 11 names as a good place for a house's lord. The same sign holds the Lagna lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 10 (the Lagna lord in the 10th: paternal happiness, royal honour, fame, self-earned wealth) applies alongside Sl. 22. The Moon, however, is combust and almost exactly new, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 counts a weak Moon as a malefic; Ch. 12 lists combustion among the Lagna lord's weakening conditions. Rahu joins both, and Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says a node gives results according to the lords it is with.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 10th house in 212, or 7.1%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 10th lord in the 2nd house. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 9th and the 2nd lord in the 11th; the other angles are the 4th and the 7th. The Dashamsa calculator computes the tenth division. For the worked example's planet see the Sun in the 10th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 2nd lord in the 10th house
- What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 10th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 22: honourable, learned and wealthy, with clauses about desire, many wives and little happiness from children that this page reports as the text's statements only.
- Is it good for career and money?
- BPHS Ch. 13 says a 2nd lord in an angle promotes wealth, and Ch. 11 names the 10th as a good place for a house's lord. Those are rules about positions; this app does not forecast careers or income.
- Does it mean no happiness from children?
- Sl. 22 contains that line. BPHS itself lets contrary lordships cancel (for example a 2nd lord that also owns the 5th), and this app does not predict family matters from one placement.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- Cancer rising (the Sun exalted in Aries) and Capricorn rising (Saturn exalted in Libra). Libra rising gives a debilitated Mars.
- How does it compare with the 10th lord in the 2nd?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 110 reads the reverse placement as wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king, charitable and happy through the father. Both verses give wealth and honour; they differ on which family members they mention.
- How common is it?
- 212 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.1%) in the engine's sample.
