In short

The 2nd lord in the 4th house places the ruler of wealth and family in the angle of home, mother, land and vehicles. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 16 reads it as acquiring all kinds of wealth, and adds that an exalted 2nd lord joined with Jupiter makes the native equal to a king. Ch. 13 independently counts a 2nd lord in an angle as promoting wealth.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord rules wealth, family, food and speech. In the 4th house it sits in the angle of home, mother, land, buildings, vehicles and contentment. Money and family meet property and domestic life, and the classical reading is about accumulation.

The 4th is a Kendra, the first angle after the Lagna. That single fact satisfies one of the conditions BPHS names for a 2nd lord to promote wealth, before the planet's dignity or company is considered.

The two houses involved

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in Ch. 11 Sl. 5. Note "treasure" in that list: the 4th is a house of stored wealth in its own right, which gives the 2nd lord's arrival there a natural fit.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 4th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 16 says that with the 2nd lord in the 4th the native "will acquire all kinds of wealth". It then adds a condition: "If Dhan's Lord is exalted and is yuti with Guru, one will be equal to a king." bphs-alt.txt has the same words.

It is one of the plainest verses in the 2nd-lord series: no faults, no marriage clause, only wealth, with a stronger result under a stated condition. The condition has two parts, exaltation of the 2nd lord and conjunction with Jupiter, and both have to hold. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still scales the basic result by strength.

The 2nd-house chapter agrees. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says the 2nd lord in the 2nd, in an angle or in a trine promotes wealth; the 4th is an angle. Ch. 13 Sl. 5 adds a stronger form: a 2nd lord in an angle, with the 11th lord in a trine from it, or with the 2nd lord aspected by or joined with Jupiter and Venus, makes one wealthy. For the 4th house the trines from it are the 4th, 8th and 12th, so that clause asks for the 11th lord in one of those. Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 gives the counterweight: the 2nd and 11th lords both combust or with malefics point to penury.

The 4th-house chapter adds one more lens. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 says a benefic related to the 4th house or its lord gives good results for vehicles and comforts, a malefic the reverse. A benefic 2nd lord arriving in the 4th is itself such a relation. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

The 2nd lord and the 4th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Only Libra rising gives exaltation: Mars, lord of the 2nd and 7th, in Capricorn. That makes Libra rising the only Ascendant on which Sl. 16's royal condition can be tested, and it has a built-in difficulty. The second half of the condition asks for Jupiter to join the 2nd lord, and Capricorn is Jupiter's sign of debilitation in the engine's table. Exalted Mars with Jupiter in Capricorn therefore always means Jupiter is debilitated. The verse does not address that; this page notes it because the engine makes it visible.

Two Ascendants give debilitation: Cancer rising (the Sun in Libra) and Capricorn rising (Saturn in Aries, which for Capricorn is also the Lagna lord). Three give an enemy's sign (Aries: Venus in Cancer; Aquarius: Jupiter in Taurus; Pisces: Mars in Gemini), two a friendly one (Taurus, Gemini) and four a neutral one. As a table it is weaker than the verse sounds, which is exactly the gap Sl. 145-148 is there to close.

Strength changes the reading

The second lordship travels with the planet. For Capricorn rising the 2nd lord is also the Lagna lord, so the debilitated Saturn there is both the person's planet and the wealth planet. For Pisces rising the 2nd lord Mars also owns the 9th, a trine, which Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 counts as auspicious. For Aries and Libra it owns the 7th; for Taurus and Scorpio the 5th; for Leo and Aquarius the 11th, so both wealth lordships sit in the 4th. Combustion and malefic company are the standard reducing factors; benefic aspects on the 4th (from the 10th, or Jupiter from the 8th or 12th) the standard supports.

Readers sometimes look for a named wealth yoga in this placement. The texts in the corpus name the Sl. 16 royal case and the Ch. 13 conditions; for wealth combinations generally see dhana yoga, and for what the engine detects, the yoga calculator.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Mars combust in Gemini

The engine's deterministic search returned: 5 June 1985, 02:29 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 27.77. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Pisces rising makes Aries the 2nd, so Mars is the 2nd lord; it also owns Scorpio, the 9th.
  • Mars is in Gemini at 3.31 degrees, Mrigashira pada 3: the 4th house. Not retrograde; the engine marks it combust, with dignity Neutral.
  • The Sun is in Taurus at 20.51 in the 3rd, which is why Mars, a little under 13 degrees ahead, is combust. The 4th lord, Mercury, is also in Taurus in the 3rd and also combust.
  • The Moon in Sagittarius in the 10th aspects the 4th by the seventh-house aspect. The 11th lord, Saturn, is exalted and retrograde in Libra in the 8th; Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn in the 11th.

The angle condition of Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 holds. Ch. 13 Sl. 5's first clause, the 11th lord in a trine from the 2nd lord, also holds: Saturn is in the 8th, which is the 5th sign from the 4th. Against those, Mars is combust and only neutral, which Sl. 145-148 would scale down, and Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7's penury condition is half met (the 2nd lord is combust; the 11th lord, Saturn, is not). The Moon's aspect is a benefic one by the engine's list: the Moon at Sagittarius 13.77 is about 203 degrees from the Sun, just past full. The royal condition of Sl. 16 does not arise; Mars is not exalted and not with Jupiter.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 4th house in 255, or 8.5%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 2nd house (Sl. 38), also speaks of wealth and family life. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 3rd and the 2nd lord in the 5th; the other angles are covered by the 2nd lord in the 7th and the 2nd lord in the 10th. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 4th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Two further checks sit outside Ch. 24. From the 4th the 2nd lord aspects the 10th, the house of livelihood, by the seventh-house aspect, so in every chart with this placement the lord of wealth looks at the house of work; BPHS does not comment on that aspect for this placement, and the engine simply records it. And BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "fortunes" to the Chaturthamsa, the fourth division of each sign, which this app computes in the Chaturthamsa (D4) calculator. A reader following the classical method would look at the 2nd lord's position there as well as in the birth chart.

Questions about the 2nd lord in the 4th house

What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 4th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 16: the native acquires all kinds of wealth, and if the 2nd lord is exalted and joined with Jupiter, he equals a king.
Which Ascendant can produce the royal case?
Only Libra rising, where Mars is exalted in Capricorn in the 4th. Jupiter joining it there would be debilitated, a detail the verse does not address.
Does it mean owning property?
The verse speaks of wealth and the 4th house includes lands and buildings. This app treats that as a classical rule about positions, not a forecast about property.
Why does Ch. 13 matter here?
BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says a 2nd lord in an angle promotes wealth, and the 4th is an angle, so the 2nd-house chapter and Ch. 24 point the same way.
How common is it?
255 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.5%) in the engine's sample.
