In short

The 4th lord in the 2nd house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the house of wealth, family and speech. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 38 reads it as pleasures, all kinds of wealth, family life and honour, an adventurous temper and a cunning disposition. By sign the table is uneven: exalted for Aries and Aquarius rising, debilitated for Sagittarius, and with no friendly rows at all.

What the placement means

The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment, and its house list includes "treasure". In the 2nd house it sits in the house of accumulated wealth, family, food and speech. Stored comfort moves into stored wealth: the two houses of what a family holds are joined.

The 2nd is the 11th counted from the 4th, its house of gain. It is neither an angle nor a trine nor a dusthana, which puts it outside both of the Bhrigu Sutras' 4th-lord tests, and makes Ch. 24's own verse the main classical reading.

The two houses involved

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in Ch. 11 Sl. 3, and one of the two maraka houses of Ch. 44. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 2nd

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 38 says that with the 4th lord in the 2nd the native "will enjoy pleasures, all kinds of wealth, family life and honour and be adventurous", adding that he will be "cunning in disposition". bphs-alt.txt has the same words.

The verse takes the 4th's pleasures and comforts and the 2nd's wealth and family and adds them together. "Family life" is the 2nd's family; "pleasures" the 4th's happiness. "Cunning" is the one qualification, and the verse does not say where it comes from; the 2nd is the house of speech, which may be the link, but that is an inference this page marks as such rather than the text's reasoning.

BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 reads benefics in the 2nd as adding wealth and malefics as destroying it, so the 4th lord's nature now matters to the 2nd house. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 reads benefics and malefics related to the 4th lord as helping or hurting the 4th's conveyances. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 38 by strength and reads both lordships together. The Bhrigu Sutras' 4th-lord clauses name angles and trines on one side and the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th on the other; the 2nd is in neither group, so they are silent here. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

BPHS also licenses a second way of looking at the placement. Ch. 23 Sl. 7 says that just as effects for the native are read from the Lagna, "similar deductions be made" about siblings and others from their own houses, counting from there. Counted from the 4th, the house of the mother, the 2nd is the 11th: the mother's house of gains. Ch. 24 does not use that counting in Sl. 38, and this page does not draw a conclusion about anyone's mother from it; it is noted only because the method is in the text.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 16), gives "all kinds of wealth" too, and adds that an exalted 2nd lord joined with Jupiter makes the native equal to a king. The two verses agree on wealth from either direction, which is unusual enough in Ch. 24 to note: the 2nd and 4th, the houses of held wealth and of treasure, reinforce each other whichever lord travels. When both happen together the two lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as Parivartana Yoga.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the 2nd sign:

The 4th lord and the 2nd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Two rows give exaltation: Aries rising (the Moon in Taurus) and Aquarius rising (Venus in Pisces). For Aquarius rising Venus owns the 4th and 9th, so the yogakaraka of that Ascendant is exalted in the house of wealth. Sagittarius rising gives the one debilitation: Jupiter, lord of the 1st and 4th, in Capricorn, so the Lagna lord is debilitated in the 2nd as well. Five rows are enemy signs (Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra) and four neutral; none is friendly.

The second lordships give the rows different characters. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is also the Lagna lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 2 (the Lagna lord in the 2nd: gain, learning, honour) applies alongside Sl. 38. For Leo rising Mars brings the 9th; for Libra Saturn brings the 5th, so the yogakaraka of Libra rising sits in the 2nd in an enemy's sign; for Virgo and Pisces it brings the 7th; for Cancer and Capricorn the 11th, putting the lord of gains in the house of wealth; for Scorpio the 3rd.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 38. Ch. 13 Sl. 13 adds that malefics with the 2nd and its lord bring untruthful speech, which sits beside Sl. 38's "cunning". Aspects on the 2nd come from the 8th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 10th and 6th, Mars from the 11th and 7th, and Saturn from the 12th and 5th.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Mars in Aquarius

The engine's deterministic search returned: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 17.6. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Capricorn rising makes Aries the 4th, so Mars is the 4th lord; Mars also owns Scorpio, the 11th.
  • Mars is in Aquarius at 18.47 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 4: the 2nd house. Not retrograde, not combust. The sign-only label is Neutral; in this chart the engine gives "Friendly sign".
  • Venus is in Aquarius too, at 12.80. The Moon, in Leo in the 8th, aspects the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect.
  • Saturn, which owns the 1st and 2nd, is in Scorpio in the 11th, Mars's sign. Mars and Saturn have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga.

Mars here carries two lordships into the 2nd, the 4th and the 11th, so Sl. 38 and Sl. 122 (the 11th lord in the 2nd: all kinds of wealth and accomplishments, charitable, religious, happy) both apply under Sl. 145-148. The exchange with Saturn adds Sl. 11 and Sl. 23 from Saturn's side, which is why this chart has also appeared on other pages of this series. For Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2, the 2nd holds Venus, a benefic, and Mars, a malefic, and receives the Moon's aspect (the Moon at Leo 5.43 is well past full). From the 2nd, Mars itself aspects the 5th, 8th and 9th under the engine's rule. The text supplies these rules; this page draws no conclusion about any person's wealth.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 2nd house in 288, or 9.6%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 2nd lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 1st and the 4th lord in the 3rd. For wealth combinations generally see dhana yoga. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 2nd house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 4th lord in the 2nd house

What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 2nd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 38: pleasures, all kinds of wealth, family life and honour, an adventurous nature and a cunning disposition.
Is it a wealth combination?
Both Sl. 38 and its reverse, Sl. 16, speak of wealth. BPHS still scales them by strength, and this app does not forecast anyone's finances.
Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
Aries rising (the Moon exalted in Taurus) and Aquarius rising (Venus, the yogakaraka, exalted in Pisces). Sagittarius rising gives a debilitated Jupiter.
Why are there no friendly rows in the table?
For every Ascendant the 2nd sign is ruled by a planet the 4th lord is neutral or hostile to by natural relationship, unless the sign is its exaltation or debilitation. A real chart can shift that through the temporary relationship.
Does it say anything about my mother?
Sl. 38 does not mention the mother. BPHS reads her mainly from the 4th house, its lord and "the indicator of mother" in Ch. 15 Sl. 6-7, and this app does not forecast family matters or anyone's health.
How common is it?
288 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.6%) in the engine's sample.
