House lords

The lord of the 4th house placed in the 1st: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37 (learning, virtues, lands, vehicles, maternal happiness), the Ch. 15 rules on residence and mother, the yogakaraka Ascendants, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Scorpio-rising chart.

In short

The 4th lord in the 1st house brings the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37 is wholly favourable: learning, virtues, ornaments, lands, conveyances and happiness through the mother. Both houses are angles, and for Libra, Leo and Aquarius rising the 4th lord also rules a trine, making it the chart's yogakaraka.

What the placement means

The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, buildings, vehicles and contentment. Placed in the 1st, it brings those matters into the house of the self: the comforts of home become part of the person's own condition.

Both houses are Kendras, and the Lagna is a trine as well. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-13 builds its yoga rules on relations between angle lords and trine lords, and an angle lord in the Lagna is one of them. For three Ascendants the 4th lord also owns a trine, which makes it what the texts call a yogakaraka.

The two houses involved

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5; Ch. 15 gives its rules.

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is body, intellect, vigour and nature in Ch. 11 Sl. 2. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 1st

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37 opens the 4th-lord series: the native "will be endowed with learning, virtues, ornaments, lands, conveyances and maternal happiness". bphs-alt.txt has the same words. It is a list of the 4th house's own goods, given directly to the person, with no fault named.

Almost every item comes from Ch. 11 Sl. 5's list for the 4th: lands, conveyances, mother, treasure (the ornaments). "Learning" is the one addition: Ch. 11 does not list it for the 4th, and the verse states it without explanation. The order of the list is worth noticing too. It begins with qualities of the person (learning, virtues) and moves to possessions (ornaments, lands, vehicles), as if the 4th lord in the Lagna first shapes the native and then furnishes the native's life.

The 4th-house chapter supports the reading from several angles. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 2 gives residential comfort "in full degree" when the 4th is occupied by its own lord or by the Lagna lord, with a benefic aspect; that is a 4th-house condition, not this placement, but it shows how closely Ch. 15 ties the 4th lord and the Lagna lord. Sl. 6 says the mother is long-lived when a benefic is in the 4th, the 4th lord exalted and the Moon strong; Sl. 7 says the mother is happy when the 4th lord is in an angle, Venus is in an angle and Mercury exalted. The Lagna is an angle, so the 4th lord in the 1st meets the first part of Sl. 7. Sl. 10-14 adds that a benefic related to the 4th or its lord helps conveyances, a malefic the reverse.

The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus, commenting on the Sun in the 4th, say that a 4th lord strong by exaltation or own sign and placed in an angle or trine gives high-class conveyances, while a 4th lord with malefics or in the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th gives the reverse. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 37 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the Lagna lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 4), gives happiness from both parents, many brothers, and a virtuous, charming but lustful nature. Both verses name the mother; Sl. 37 adds lands, vehicles and learning, Sl. 4 adds the father and brothers. When both happen together, the 1st and 4th lords have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga between two angle lords, as in the worked example below.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the rising sign:

The 4th lord and the 1st-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Gemini and Sagittarius rising are the own-sign rows: the 4th lord is also the Lagna lord (Mercury, Jupiter) and sits in its own rising sign. Two rows give exaltation: Libra rising (Saturn in Libra) and Capricorn rising (Mars in Capricorn). Pisces rising gives the one debilitation: Mercury, lord of the 4th and 7th, in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio), two friendly (Leo, Aquarius) and one neutral (Aries).

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls a planet that owns both an angle and a trine "specially a Yog Karak". Three Ascendants make the 4th lord one: Leo rising (Mars owns the 4th and 9th), Libra rising (Saturn owns the 4th and 5th) and Aquarius rising (Venus owns the 4th and 9th). For Libra rising the yogakaraka is also exalted in the Lagna, the strongest row in the table by both measures. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is the Lagna lord, which Ch. 34 calls specially auspicious in its own right.

Strength changes the reading

The Bhrigu Sutras' test is direct: is the 4th lord exalted or in its own sign? In this placement that is true for Gemini, Sagittarius, Libra and Capricorn rising, and the Lagna is an angle and a trine, so their conveyance clause would apply. For the rest, dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 37 through Sl. 145-148. Aspects on the Lagna come from the 7th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 5th and 9th, Mars from the 10th and 6th, and Saturn from the 11th and 4th.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Saturn in the Lagna

The engine's deterministic search returned: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Scorpio rising makes Aquarius the 4th, so Saturn is the 4th lord; Saturn also owns Capricorn, the 3rd.
  • Saturn is in Scorpio at 1.09 degrees, Vishakha pada 4, in the 1st house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Neutral" in this chart.
  • Mercury and Ketu share the Lagna. The Lagna lord, Mars, is in Aquarius, the 4th, with Venus.
  • So the 1st and 4th lords occupy each other's signs, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga between them, framed as favourable because both own angles.

This chart has Sl. 37 and Sl. 4 at once, through the exchange. It also meets the Lagna-lord half of Ch. 15 Sl. 2 (the Lagna lord occupies the 4th), with Venus, a benefic, in the 4th beside it, though the verse asks for a benefic aspect rather than a conjunction. Saturn is neutral, not exalted or in its own sign, so the Bhrigu Sutras' conveyance clause is not met in its strong form. Ch. 15 Sl. 7's mother condition is met in its first part (the 4th lord in an angle) but not the others: Venus is in the 4th, an angle, but Mercury is not exalted. Saturn also owns the 3rd, which Ch. 34 lists among the troublesome ownerships.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 1st house in 246, or 8.2%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 1st lord in the 4th house; exchanges are explained under Parivartana Yoga. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 2nd and the 4th lord in the 12th. BPHS Ch. 7 reads conveyances from the Shodashamsa, computed by the Shodashamsa (D16) calculator. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 1st house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 4th lord in the 1st house

What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 37: learning, virtues, ornaments, lands, conveyances and happiness through the mother.
Does it mean owning property and vehicles?
The verse lists lands and conveyances, and the Bhrigu Sutras add a stronger clause for an exalted or own-sign 4th lord in an angle. These are classical rules about positions; this app does not forecast property.
When is the 4th lord a yogakaraka?
When it also owns a trine: for Leo rising (Mars), Libra rising (Saturn) and Aquarius rising (Venus). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls such a planet specially a Yoga Karaka.
Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
Libra rising (Saturn exalted, and a yogakaraka), Capricorn rising (Mars exalted), and Gemini and Sagittarius rising (own sign). Pisces rising gives a debilitated Mercury.
How common is it?
246 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.2%) in the engine's sample.
