House lords

The 4th lord placed in the 12th house: the critical BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 48 and its reverse, the Bhrigu Sutras' 4th-lord rule, the Ch. 23 rules on what the 12th's outflow goes to, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Scorpio-rising chart with Saturn exalted and retrograde in Libra.

In short

The 4th lord in the 12th house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the house of expenditure and loss. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 48 is critical: a lack of domestic comforts, vices and indolence. Its reverse speaks of losses in lands and houses, and the Bhrigu Sutras read a 4th lord in the 12th as weakening property, though by sign the lord is exalted for Taurus and Scorpio rising.

What the placement means

The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment. In the 12th house it sits in the house of expenditure and loss, which BPHS Ch. 23 also reads for wandering and for final emancipation. The house of settled comfort places its lord in the house of letting go.

The 12th is a dusthana and the 9th counted from the 4th. BPHS does not use the second counting here; both its verse for this placement and its verse for the reverse read the 4th-12th link as a loss of the 4th's comforts.

The two houses involved

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death in Ch. 11 Sl. 13. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 12th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 48 says that with the 4th lord in the 12th the native "will be devoid of domestic and other comforts", and adds vices, foolishness and indolence. bphs-alt.txt has the same text. The verse is reported here as the text's statement about a type, not as a judgement of any person.

Its first clause is almost identical to the first clause of Sl. 44 (the 4th lord in the 8th): both dusthanas take the 4th's domestic comfort away. Sl. 48 then turns to character, where Sl. 44 turned to the parents. The 12th's outflow is read as a loss of the 4th house's rest and ease.

The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus agree in direction for the 4th's possessions: a 4th lord "placed in a bad house (3, 6, 8 or 12)", or with malefics, gives a low type of conveyance, no land of one's own and residence in others' houses. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 reads benefic and malefic relations to the 4th lord for vehicles.

The 12th-house chapter asks what kind of outflow it is. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 says expenses will be "on good accounts" if a benefic occupies the 12th, or if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted. Sl. 13 is the reverse: Saturn or Mars in the 12th without a benefic aspect means earnings by questionable means. When the 4th lord is itself a benefic, it is a benefic in the 12th for Sl. 1-4; when it is Saturn or Mars, Sl. 13 applies unless a benefic aspects it. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 48 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 136), is in summary a loss of maternal happiness and steady losses in lands, vehicles and houses. Both directions read the 4th-12th link as a drain on the 4th's goods: Sl. 136 on property, Sl. 48 on comfort and conduct. When both occur, the lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as a Parivartana Yoga, framed as favourable only if the 12th lord also owns an angle or trine.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 4th lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

By sign this table is strong. Two rows give exaltation: Taurus rising (the Sun in Aries) and Scorpio rising (Saturn, lord of the 3rd and 4th, in Libra). Seven give a friendly sign and two a neutral one. Leo rising gives the one debilitation: Mars, the yogakaraka for Leo (lord of the 4th and 9th), in Cancer. The other yogakaraka rows are friendly: Saturn for Libra rising in Virgo, Venus for Aquarius rising in Capricorn.

For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is the Lagna lord too, so Ch. 24 Sl. 12 (the Lagna lord in the 12th, conditional on lacking benefic contact) applies to the same planet. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 9th lordship brings Sl. 108 (the 9th lord in the 12th: loss of fortune, spending on auspicious acts); for Libra, Sl. 60 (the 5th lord in the 12th); for Virgo and Pisces, Sl. 84 (the 7th lord in the 12th); for Cancer and Capricorn, Sl. 132 (the 11th lord in the 12th, which pairs good deeds with indulgence); for Scorpio, Sl. 36 (the 3rd lord in the 12th). All are summarised as the text's statements.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 48, and the planet's nature decides which side of Ch. 23 applies. Aspects on the 12th come from the 6th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 4th and 8th, Mars from the 9th and 5th, and Saturn from the 10th and 3rd. A 4th lord in the 12th aspects the 6th.

Leo rising shows how many rules can meet in one planet here. Mars is the yogakaraka (Ch. 34 Sl. 13), debilitated (the weak end of Sl. 145-148), a 4th lord in a "bad house" for the Bhrigu Sutras, a 9th lord in the 12th for Sl. 108, and a Mars in the 12th for Ch. 23 Sl. 13 unless a benefic aspects it. BPHS lists all of these rules and asks the reader to weigh them; it does not give a combined answer, and this page does not invent one. For Scorpio rising the same exercise starts from an exalted planet, which is why the two Ascendants read so differently even though Sl. 48 is the same verse.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Saturn exalted in Libra

The engine's deterministic search returned: 20 July 1985, 15:34 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 12.3. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Scorpio rising makes Aquarius the 4th, so Saturn is the 4th lord; it also owns Capricorn, the 3rd.
  • Saturn is in Libra at 27.82 degrees, Vishakha pada 3: the 12th house. The engine marks it Exalted and retrograde.
  • Ketu is in Libra too, at 20.89. Mars, the Lagna lord, debilitated and combust in Cancer in the 9th, aspects the 12th by its 4th-house special aspect.
  • The 12th lord, Venus, is in its own sign, Taurus, in the 7th; the engine reports Malavya and Amala Yoga for it.

Saturn is at full strength by dignity, so by Sl. 145-148 Sl. 48 and Sl. 36 (for its 3rd lordship) would both apply in full measure. Ch. 23 gives two readings here. Sl. 13's condition is met: Saturn is in the 12th with no benefic aspect, only Mars's. But Sl. 1-4's condition is arguably met too, by a different route: the 12th lord, Venus, is in a house it owns (Taurus, its own sign, the 7th), and the verse's phrase is "in his own Bhava". BPHS states both; this page does not decide between them. The engine also reports a Sun-Moon Parivartana (the Sun in Cancer, the Moon in Leo) between the 10th and 9th lords, unrelated to this placement.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 12th house in 232, or 7.7%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 12th lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 11th and, round the circle, the 4th lord in the 1st; the other dusthana cases are the 6th and the 8th. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 12th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 4th lord in the 12th house

What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 12th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 48 is critical: a lack of domestic comforts, vices, foolishness and indolence. It is reported as the text's statement only.
Does it mean losing property?
BPHS and the Bhrigu Sutras both read the placement as weakening the 4th's comforts and possessions. These are classical rules about positions; this app does not forecast property.
Can the outflow be positive?

Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
Taurus rising (the Sun exalted in Aries) and Scorpio rising (Saturn exalted in Libra). Leo rising gives a debilitated Mars, its yogakaraka.
How common is it?
232 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.7%) in the engine's sample.
