In short

The 12th lord in the 4th house is the ruler of expenditure placed in the angle of home, mother, land and vehicles. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 136 reads it as lacking happiness from the mother and losing lands, conveyances and houses day by day, the text's claim and not a forecast. By sign the table is favourable: eight friendly rows and one exalted (Aries rising, where the 12th lord also owns the 9th).

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 4th house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of home, the mother, land, conveyances and inner contentment. The house of outflow carries its affairs into the house of foundations.

The 4th is a Kendra. Counted from the 12th, it is the 5th, a trine relative to the house of loss. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) governs the mother, home, land, conveyances and happiness.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 4th

Ch. 24 Sl. 136: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Bandhu Bhava, the native "will be devoid of maternal happiness" and "will day by day accrue losses with respect to lands, conveyances and houses". The bphs-alt text agrees. Each 4th-house possession meets the 12th house's loss, and "day by day" makes it gradual rather than sudden. It closely mirrors Sl. 88 (the 8th lord in the 4th), which also speaks of losing the mother's care and house and lands; the two dusthana lords read alike in the house of home. This page reports the verse as the text's claim.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses, contrary results cancelling.

A dusthana lord in an angle

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 leave the 12th lord to its associations and add that benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects while malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious. The 12th lord is also a Kendra lord for three Ascendants: Taurus and Scorpio rising, where it owns the 7th (Mars, Venus), and Aquarius rising, where Saturn owns the 1st. In the 4th, those planets put two angles' affairs together, the second angle with the 12th. For Aries rising, the Bhrigu Sutras' editor notes the case of Jupiter, "lord of the 9th exalted in the 4th", in the commentary on Jupiter in the 4th; the same Jupiter is also the 12th lord, which the commentary does not mention. Saravali gives no verse on the 12th lord in the 4th.

Aries rising is the exalted row: Jupiter, owner of the 9th and 12th, in Cancer. Two rows are debilitated: Venus in Virgo for Gemini rising (Venus owns the 5th and 12th) and the Moon in Scorpio for Leo rising. Libra rising gives a neutral sign (Mercury in Capricorn). The other eight rows are friendly signs, so by sign alone the 12th lord is usually comfortable in the 4th, and Sl. 136 usually comes through at more than half strength.

Hamsa Yoga for Aries rising

Because the 4th is a Kendra, Jupiter exalted there forms Hamsa Yoga, one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, in this app's sense. The engine reports it whenever the 12th lord is in the 4th for Aries rising. The yoga comes from Jupiter's sign and house, not its lordships; by Sl. 145-148, an exalted Jupiter gives both its lordships' results fully, the 9th lord's favourable verse for the 4th (Sl. 100) and the 12th lord's unfavourable one (Sl. 136), and the chapter says varied results both come to pass.

Contrary verses inside one planet

Several rows set two Ch. 24 verses against each other through one planet. For Aries rising Jupiter is the 9th lord, whose verse for the 4th (Sl. 100) gives houses, conveyances and devotion to the mother, and the 12th lord, whose verse (Sl. 136) gives the loss of the same things. For Libra rising Mercury holds the same pair of lordships and stands in Capricorn, neutral. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 12th lord also owns the 5th, whose verse for the 4th (Sl. 52) gives maternal happiness, wealth and high office. Sl. 145-148 say contrary results from two lordships cancel; in these rows that rule is not a technicality but the main part of the reading.

The two debilitated rows have no such offset worth the name. For Leo rising the Moon owns only the 12th; for Gemini rising Venus owns the 5th as well but is debilitated in Virgo, so both its lordships come through at about a quarter.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 136 is unfavourable, a strong 12th lord gives it more fully, and the offset is the second lordship. For Aries and Libra rising that is the 9th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 5th; for Taurus and Scorpio, the 7th, a second angle; for Aquarius, the Lagna. Dignity, combustion and company all count.

From the 4th, every graha aspects the 10th. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 7th and the 11th; a Jupiter the 8th and the 12th, so a Jupiter 12th lord in the 4th looks back at its own house; a Saturn the 6th and the 1st.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 12th (Sl. 48), also reads as lacking domestic comforts, with vices, foolishness and indolence, the text's claims. Both together are a parivartana between an angle and a dusthana. The 12th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 135) concerns siblings and the 12th lord in the 5th (Sl. 137) children and learning.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Venus in Aquarius

This is the first moment in the engine's deterministic search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Scorpio rising the 12th house is Libra and the 12th lord is Venus, which also owns Taurus, the 7th.
  • The 4th house is Aquarius. Venus is there at 2.74 degrees, Dhanishta pada 3, "Friendly sign"; not retrograde, not combust.
  • Mars, the Lagna lord (and 6th lord), shares Aquarius at 11.51.
  • The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus (as 7th lord) and Mars (as Lagna lord) together, and a Parivarthana between Mars and Saturn.

This chart puts the 12th lord beside the Lagna lord in the house of home. On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, uncombust Venus gives Sl. 136 fairly fully, and its second lordship, the 7th, an angle, brings the 7th lord's own verse for the 4th (Sl. 76) with it. The engine's yoga counts Venus by its 7th lordship; Ch. 34 Sl. 15 would discount a link in which a planet owns an evil house, and Ch. 34 classes the 12th lord by association rather than as evil. Saturn, the 4th lord, sits in the 1st and has exchanged signs with Mars.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 4th house in 215, or 7.2%, below one in twelve. That is a count of moments, not people.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 4th

What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 4th house?

The verse names gradual losses as a classical tendency. This app does not forecast property or family matters from a placement.

For Aries rising: Jupiter, the 9th and 12th lord, exalted in Cancer in the 4th, a Kendra.
Which Ascendants put the 12th lord weakest here?
