In short
The 4th lord in the 3rd house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the house of courage, effort and siblings. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 39 is wholly favourable: valour, servants, generosity, virtue, charity, self-earned wealth and freedom from disease. The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus read a 4th lord in the 3rd less kindly for property and vehicles, so the sources disagree.
What the placement means
The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, buildings, vehicles and contentment. In the 3rd house it sits in the house of courage, effort, siblings, attendants and short journeys. The house of rest places its lord in the house of exertion.
The 3rd is the 12th counted from the 4th, the house of loss relative to the 4th's own matters. It is also an upachaya, a house that grows with effort. BPHS reads the placement through the second fact and finds a self-reliant, generous native; the Bhrigu Sutras read it closer to the first and find the 4th's property themes weakened.
The two houses involved
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in Ch. 11 Sl. 4. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 3rd
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 39 says that with the 4th lord in the 3rd the native "will be valorous, will have servants, be liberal, virtuous and charitable and will possess self-earned wealth", and "will be free from diseases". bphs-alt.txt has the same words.
Every clause is positive. Valour and servants are the 3rd's first two significations in Ch. 11; self-earned wealth is the 3rd's effort turned into the 4th's treasure; liberality and charity describe a giving temperament. Freedom from disease is a classical bodily association, reported here and not as a medical statement. The verse says nothing directly about the mother, lands or vehicles, the 4th lord's own matters.
The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus fill that gap, and less kindly. In the comments on their Sun-in-the-4th sutras, they say that if the 4th lord is associated with or aspected by a malefic, "or is placed in a bad house (3, 6, 8 or 12)", the native will have a low type of conveyance, no land of his own, and will live in other people's houses. The 3rd is on that list. So BPHS Ch. 24 reads the person as strong and self-made, while the Bhrigu Sutras read the 4th's property and vehicles as weakened. The two sources speak to different questions and disagree in tone; this page reports both and does not merge them.
BPHS's own rules point both ways too. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 reads a benefic related to the 4th lord as good for vehicles and a malefic as bad. Ch. 14 Sl. 1 reads a benefic in the 3rd as good for siblings and courage, so a benefic 4th lord in the 3rd helps the 3rd house. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 39 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 28), gives happiness, wealth and intelligence, with a clause about a difficult spouse that is the text's. Both verses give wealth; Sl. 39 makes it self-earned and adds valour and generosity, Sl. 28 adds the 4th's happiness. Each lord takes on the visited house's signification, the pattern Ch. 24 follows most often. When both happen at once, the lords have exchanged signs and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the 3rd sign:
| Ascendant | 4th lord | Other house it rules | 3rd house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Moon | none | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Sun | none | Cancer | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 1st (Gemini) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Cancer | Venus | 11th (Taurus) | Virgo | Debilitated |
| Leo | Mars | 9th (Aries) | Libra | Neutral |
| Virgo | Jupiter | 7th (Pisces) | Scorpio | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Saturn | 5th (Aquarius) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 3rd (Capricorn) | Capricorn | Own sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 1st (Sagittarius) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Capricorn | Mars | 11th (Scorpio) | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Venus | 9th (Libra) | Aries | Neutral |
| Pisces | Mercury | 7th (Virgo) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
Scorpio rising is the special row: Saturn owns both the 3rd (Capricorn) and the 4th (Aquarius), so it is in its own sign in the 3rd. Cancer rising gives the one debilitation: Venus, lord of the 4th and 11th, in Virgo. Six rows give a friendly sign and four a neutral one. No row gives exaltation, so the Bhrigu Sutras' strong-4th-lord clause cannot be met by exaltation here, and the 3rd is not an angle or trine in any case.
For three Ascendants the 4th lord is the yogakaraka (BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13): Mars for Leo rising (in Libra, neutral), Saturn for Libra rising (in Sagittarius, neutral) and Venus for Aquarius rising (in Aries, neutral). In this placement each sits in the 3rd, the upachaya the text reads for effort. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is the Lagna lord too, so Ch. 24 Sl. 3 (the Lagna lord in the 3rd, "a lion in valour") applies alongside Sl. 39; both verses name valour.
Strength changes the reading
Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 39, and company also decides the Bhrigu Sutras' clause, which names malefic association or aspect. Aspects on the 3rd come from the 9th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 7th and 11th, Mars from the 12th and 8th, and Saturn from the 1st and 6th.
Worked example: Pisces rising, Mercury combust in Taurus
The engine's deterministic search returned: 5 June 1985, 02:29 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 27.77. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Pisces rising makes Gemini the 4th, so Mercury is the 4th lord; Mercury also owns Virgo, the 7th.
- Mercury is in Taurus at 17.17 degrees, Rohini pada 3: the 3rd house. Not retrograde; the engine marks it combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
- The Sun is in Taurus at 20.51, about three degrees from Mercury.
- Jupiter, debilitated in Capricorn in the 11th, aspects the 3rd by its 5th-house special aspect. The 3rd lord, Venus, is in Aries in the 2nd.
Mercury carries two angle lordships (the 4th and 7th) into the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says benefics owning angles lose benefic force, and Sl. 8-10 that Mercury takes the nature of its company, here the Sun, a malefic. That conjunction is the "associated with a malefic" condition of the Bhrigu Sutras' clause, on top of the 3rd being one of its named houses. Against that, Jupiter's aspect is benefic influence from a debilitated planet, and Mercury is friendly by chart. Sl. 39 would apply at reduced strength because Mercury is combust. Mercury's 7th lordship also brings Sl. 75 (the 7th lord in the 3rd) into the reading under Sl. 145-148. Mercury from the 3rd casts its seventh-house aspect on the 9th, the house of fortune; Ch. 24 does not comment on that aspect. The 3rd house itself receives a benefic aspect (Jupiter's) and holds a planet BPHS counts as a benefic when well accompanied, so Ch. 14 Sl. 1's condition for courage and siblings is partly present.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 3rd house in 263, or 8.8%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 3rd lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 2nd and the 4th lord in the 4th. BPHS Ch. 7 reads conveyances from the Shodashamsa, computed by the Shodashamsa (D16) calculator. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 3rd house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 4th lord in the 3rd house
- What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 3rd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 39: valour, servants, generosity, virtue, charity, self-earned wealth and freedom from disease.
- Do other texts agree?
- Not entirely. The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus read a 4th lord in the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th, or with malefics, as weakening property and vehicles. BPHS Ch. 24 speaks of the person, the Bhrigu Sutras of the 4th's possessions.
- Does it mean I will not own a home?
- No single rule is a forecast. This app reports the texts' rules about positions and does not predict property.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
- Scorpio rising, where Saturn owns both the 3rd and 4th and sits in its own sign. Cancer rising gives a debilitated Venus.
- Is the 3rd a bad house?
- The engine's dusthanas are the 6th, 8th and 12th only. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentary groups the 3rd with them as a "bad house" for the 4th lord, and BPHS Ch. 34 counts owning the 3rd among the troublesome lordships, but BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 4th lord in the 3rd favourably.
- How common is it?
- 263 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.8%) in the engine's sample.
