In short
The 4th lord in the 4th house is the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles sitting in its own house and its own sign, in an angle. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 40 is one of the most favourable verses in the chapter: a minister, wealthy, skilful, learned, honoured, happy and devoted to the spouse. Ch. 15 adds full residential comfort when a benefic also aspects the house.
What the placement means
The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, buildings, vehicles and inner contentment. When it sits in the 4th, the house is held by its own ruler, in an angle and in the planet's own sign. In classical terms it is the 4th house at full strength of ownership.
Dignity is guaranteed: own sign at least, moolatrikona for several Ascendants, and for Gemini rising possibly exaltation. That means the placement automatically meets the half of several classical conditions that concerns the 4th lord's strength and position, and the reading turns on the other half: aspects, companions and the Moon.
The house involved
One house is in play. The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5. It is a Kendra, and BPHS Ch. 15 gives it a chapter of rules on residence, mother and vehicles. The house page covers its significations.
What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 4th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 40 says that with the 4th lord in the 4th the native "will be a minister and will possess all kinds of wealth", will be skilful, virtuous, honourable, learned and happy, and "well disposed to his spouse". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The verse is unusual in naming a role, "minister", alongside qualities. It is otherwise a portrait of comfort and standing: wealth (the 4th's treasure), happiness (the 4th's name, Sukha), learning and honour. The spouse clause is one of the warmer statements about marriage in the chapter. None of it is a forecast; it is the text's picture of a well-held 4th house.
BPHS Ch. 15 gives the 4th house's own rules, and this placement meets half of several of them automatically. Sl. 2 gives residential comfort "in full degree" if the 4th is occupied by its own lord (met) and aspected by a benefic (to be checked). Sl. 6 gives a long-lived mother when a benefic is in the 4th, the 4th lord is exalted and the indicator of the mother is strong; the 4th lord is in its own sign here, exalted only for Gemini rising. Sl. 10-14 read benefics related to the 4th and its lord as good for vehicles, malefics as bad. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 adds the general principle that a house is strong when connected to its own lord.
The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus put it most simply: a 4th lord exalted or in its own sign, in an angle or trine, gives high-class conveyances. Every row of this placement meets that condition. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10 names Kahala Yoga for two configurations, one of which is the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined with the 10th lord; this placement supplies the first half, and the 10th lord has to join it in the 4th. The engine does not test Kahala Yoga.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its dignity for the 4th lord in its own 4th sign (sampled at four degrees, hence the multiple labels):
| Ascendant | 4th lord | Other house it rules | 4th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Moon | none | Cancer | Own sign |
| Taurus | Sun | none | Leo | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Gemini | Mercury | 1st (Gemini) | Virgo | Exalted or Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Cancer | Venus | 11th (Taurus) | Libra | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Leo | Mars | 9th (Aries) | Scorpio | Own sign |
| Virgo | Jupiter | 7th (Pisces) | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Libra | Saturn | 5th (Aquarius) | Capricorn | Own sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 3rd (Capricorn) | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 1st (Sagittarius) | Pisces | Own sign |
| Capricorn | Mars | 11th (Scorpio) | Aries | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Aquarius | Venus | 9th (Libra) | Taurus | Own sign |
| Pisces | Mercury | 7th (Virgo) | Gemini | Own sign |
Every row is own sign or better. Gemini rising stands out: Mercury is both the Lagna lord and the 4th lord, and in Virgo it can be exalted, moolatrikona or own sign by degree. Sagittarius rising is the parallel case for Jupiter in Pisces (own sign). For Leo, Libra and Aquarius rising the 4th lord is the yogakaraka (Mars, Saturn, Venus), sitting in its own sign in an angle. Aries and Taurus rising give the luminaries, the Moon in Cancer and the Sun in Leo.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds a note about nature: benefics owning angles do not give benefic effects, malefics owning them do not stay malefic. For this placement that means a benefic 4th lord (Venus for Cancer and Aquarius, Jupiter for Virgo and Sagittarius, Mercury for Gemini and Pisces, the Moon for Aries) carries some of that caution, while a malefic one (Mars for Leo and Capricorn, Saturn for Libra and Scorpio, the Sun for Taurus) is softened. Ch. 15's rules then ask about benefic aspects on the house regardless of the lord's own nature.
Strength changes the reading
With dignity guaranteed, the variables are aspects, companions and combustion. Aspects on the 4th come from the 10th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 8th and 12th, Mars from the 1st and 9th, and Saturn from the 2nd and 7th. A benefic among them completes Ch. 15 Sl. 2. Companions in the 4th decide Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14. The second lordship matters as well: for Capricorn rising Mars also owns the 11th, for Cancer Venus also owns the 11th, for Scorpio Saturn owns the 3rd, for Virgo and Pisces the 4th lord owns the 7th.
Worked example: Taurus rising, the Sun in Leo
The engine's deterministic search returned: 16 August 1985, 23:25 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Taurus 0.45. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Taurus rising makes Leo the 4th, so the Sun is the 4th lord. It owns no other sign.
- The Sun is in Leo at 0.14 degrees, Magha pada 1: the 4th house, at the very start of the sign. The engine marks it Moolatrikona.
- The Moon is in Leo too, at 4.39, and combust. For Taurus rising the Moon owns the 3rd.
- No graha other than the nodes aspects the 4th. The 10th lord, Saturn, is exalted in Libra in the 6th.
The 4th lord is at the strongest dignity the engine assigns short of exaltation, so by Sl. 145-148 Sl. 40 would apply in full measure. The Bhrigu Sutras' conveyance clause is met (own sign and moolatrikona, in an angle). Ch. 15 Sl. 2 is met in its first half only: no benefic aspects the 4th. The Moon shares the sign, but four degrees from the Sun it is a new Moon, which BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 counts as a malefic rather than a benefic. Kahala Yoga's second form does not occur, since the 10th lord, Saturn, is in the 6th rather than with the Sun. From the 4th, the Sun casts its seventh-house aspect on the 10th, Aquarius, the sign Saturn owns.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 4th house in 228, or 7.6%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 3rd and the 4th lord in the 5th; the angle opposite is the 4th lord in the 10th. BPHS Ch. 7 reads conveyances from the Shodashamsa, computed by the Shodashamsa (D16) calculator. For the worked example's planet see the Sun in the 4th house and the Sun in Vedic astrology. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign; without a birth time see when the birth time is unknown.
Questions about the 4th lord in the 4th house
- What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 4th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 40: a minister, with all kinds of wealth, skilful, virtuous, honourable, learned, happy and devoted to the spouse.
- Does it guarantee a comfortable home?
- No placement guarantees anything. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 2 reads full residential comfort when the 4th lord is in the 4th and a benefic aspects it; this app reports that as a rule about positions.
- What is Kahala Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10: the 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord, or the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined with the 10th lord. The engine does not test it.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- Gemini rising, where Mercury (Lagna and 4th lord) can be exalted in Virgo. Every Ascendant gives at least own sign.
- What does it say about the mother?
- Sl. 40 does not mention her. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 6-7 reads the mother from a benefic in the 4th, the 4th lord's dignity and position, and the strength of the indicator of the mother. This app does not forecast family matters or anyone's health.
- How common is it?
- 228 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.6%) in the engine's sample.
