In short

The 4th lord in the 5th house places the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles in the trine of children, learning and past merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 41 is wholly favourable: happy, liked by all, devout, virtuous, honoured, with self-earned wealth. An angle lord in a trine is also one of the relationships BPHS Ch. 34 says forms a yoga, and for Libra rising the 4th lord owns the 5th as well.

What the placement means

The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment. In the 5th house it sits in the house of children, learning, intelligence, authority and sacred formulae. The comforts of home are placed in the house of what one creates and passes on.

The 4th is a Kendra and the 5th a trikona, so this is an angle lord in a trine, one of the relationships BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says produces a yoga. The 5th is also the 2nd counted from the 4th, its house of wealth, though BPHS does not cite that counting for this placement.

The two houses involved

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is amulets, sacred formulae, learning, knowledge, sons, authority and fall from position in Ch. 11 Sl. 6; Ch. 34 calls it, with the 9th, "specially for wealth". The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 5th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 41 says that with the 4th lord in the 5th the native "will be happy and be liked by all", devoted to Vishnu, virtuous, honourable, and possessed of "self-earned wealth". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.

The verse combines the two houses' moods rather than their objects: the 4th's happiness and the 5th's merit and devotion (the 5th is the house of mantra in Ch. 11). It names no children, no property and no vehicles, which is notable for a placement joining the house of property to the house of children. The religious clause names a deity, reported as part of the text with no statement about any reader's faith.

BPHS supports it from the lordship side. Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says that when an angle lord is in a trine (or the reverse, or the two are joined or exchange signs), "they cause a Yog", and the native becomes famous. Sl. 13 says a planet owning both an angle and a trine is specially a yogakaraka. Sl. 15 adds a limit: if the angle or trine lord also owns an evil house, the mere relation does not produce a Raja Yoga. Ch. 15 Sl. 3, in the 4th-house chapter, reads the 5th lord in its own house, own Navamsa or exaltation as comforts of land, vehicles, houses and music, which matters for the one Ascendant whose 4th lord is also the 5th lord.

The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus read a strong 4th lord, exalted or in its own sign, in an angle or trine as good for conveyances; the 5th is a trine, so only the dignity condition remains. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 41 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 5th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 52), is equally favourable and more specific: happiness, happiness through the mother, wealth and intelligence, and a role as "a king, or a minister, or a preceptor". Sl. 41 and Sl. 52 both read the angle-trine link as fortunate, matching Ch. 34's rule from either direction. When both happen together the two lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as a Parivartana Yoga and frames as favourable, since both planets own an angle or trine.

Libra rising is the special row. Saturn owns Capricorn (the 4th) and Aquarius (the 5th), so it is the yogakaraka of Libra rising, and in this placement it sits in its own sign or moolatrikona in the 5th. That one planet meets Ch. 34 Sl. 13, Ch. 15 Sl. 3 (the 5th lord in its own house) and the Bhrigu Sutras' strong-4th-lord clause at once. Virgo rising gives the one debilitation: Jupiter, lord of the 4th and 7th, in Capricorn. Pisces rising puts Mercury in an enemy's sign (Cancer). Five rows are friendly and four neutral.

Two other Ascendants have a yogakaraka 4th lord, though it does not own the 5th: Leo rising (Mars, lord of the 4th and 9th, in Sagittarius, friendly) and Aquarius rising (Venus, lord of the 4th and 9th, in Gemini, friendly). In this placement each sits in a trine while owning an angle and a trine. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is also the Lagna lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 5 (the Lagna lord in the 5th) applies alongside Sl. 41. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 4th lord also owns the 11th, and for Scorpio the 3rd, the cases Sl. 15 qualifies.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 41. Aspects on the 5th come from the 11th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 1st and 9th, Mars from the 2nd and 10th, and Saturn from the 3rd and 8th. Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 reads children from the Lagna lord and 5th lord, so the 4th lord in the 5th is not, by itself, a reading about children.

Worked example: Virgo rising, Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn

The engine's deterministic search returned: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Virgo 28.04. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Virgo rising makes Sagittarius the 4th, so Jupiter is the 4th lord; Jupiter also owns Pisces, the 7th.
  • Jupiter is in Capricorn at 10.41 degrees, Shravana pada 1: the 5th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Debilitated.
  • The 5th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 3rd, in an enemy's sign, and aspects the 5th by its 3rd-house special aspect.
  • Venus is exalted in Pisces in the 7th (the engine reports Malavya Yoga for it); the Lagna lord, Mercury, is combust in the 6th.

This is the table's weak row. The angle-in-trine relation of Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 is present, and Jupiter owns two angles (the 4th and 7th), so Sl. 15's evil-house limit does not apply. But Jupiter is debilitated, the low end of Sl. 145-148, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a benefic owning angles loses some of its benefic force. The Bhrigu Sutras' conveyance clause is not met (no exaltation or own sign). The 5th's own lord aspects the house, which BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 counts in the 5th's favour, but from an enemy's sign. Sl. 41 would apply here only in a small measure by the text's own scale. One structural point remains: from the 5th, Jupiter aspects the 9th, the 11th and, by its 9th-house aspect, the Lagna itself, so the 4th lord looks back at the person even from a debilitated position. Ch. 24 does not comment on that aspect.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 5th house in 271, or 9.0%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 5th lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 4th and the 4th lord in the 6th; the other trine is the 4th lord in the 9th. For angle-trine yogas generally see Raja Yoga. For the worked example's planet see Jupiter in the 5th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 4th lord in the 5th house

What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 5th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 41: happy, liked by all, devout, virtuous, honoured, with self-earned wealth.
Is it a Raja Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says an angle lord in a trine causes a yoga. Sl. 15 limits it when the lord also owns an evil house, and the result is still scaled by strength.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
Libra rising, where Saturn owns both the 4th and 5th, is the yogakaraka, and sits in its own sign in the 5th. Virgo rising gives a debilitated Jupiter.
Does it say anything about children?
Sl. 41 does not. BPHS reads children from the Lagna lord and 5th lord (Ch. 16), and this app does not forecast children.
How common is it?
271 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.0%) in the engine's sample.
